This may be hard to explain but here goes, children may not be an ideal choice in wars but this isn't the same. Inklings have some experience in battling than any or most grownups do. I don't judge Cuttlefish's reasons since he's old and can't do it himself but he thought that these kids have a high chance of getting the job done due to the resources that they have. If I was in his position, being the person no one believes in, he's willing to take any help he can get to save the people he fought for in the past.

I really love this strip, though I haven't even touched splatoon... *sobs* ...but I would imagine that this is what soldiers might go through once they first experience near-death in combat. Someone can tell you everything the know about it, but it is first scary the moment you happen to be in the situation.
On a side note, and I don't know if anyone has pointed it out, I just discovered a coloring error. Blue'c collar is missing its color in the second frame. ^^
