Description
Photoshop CS4 25+hoursI worked for about 2 or 3 hours in the mornings for about two or three weeks (minus weekends) to finish this bad boy.
It started out as a hatchling dragon in the middle of a lava field but I didn't like the dragon so I got rid of that and just worked on lava. Lava captured my attention for days I love lava. I used no references but next time I will (I promise!). Then I was getting near the end of lava and I knew I had to put a dragon in there, I went through three or four different poses/dragons/sizes before I landed on this one and liked it
Color turned out to be an issue and I'm not entirely satisfied with my range of choices for this piece but I knew I wanted red so I focused on that. I managed to spread out into browns (then purples in the background) but I wanted a bit more range in the dragon himself. A goal for next time.
HUZZAH FOR A FULL BACKGROUND!
Thank you for each and every

Thank you. Yes, I'm not totally pleased with my range of values in this piece. It's something I'm trying to work on in future art.

I find it helps to draw backgrounds that include things I like to color. A few of my recent forest backgrounds have particular flowers that I like coloring or plant shapes that I find interesting.

I think this my favorite of your pictures, it has a lot of depth and personality, think that can mostly be attributed to the background.
Out of curiosity what drawing program do you use?

Thanks I use Photoshop CS4 but the thing that I really make use of is my tablet computer. I can draw directly on the screen so it's like sketching in a sketchbook, very handy.

Oh yes I remember that thing, that does sound like it would make drawing on the computer much easier. I'll have to invest in one at some point...Still won't make me as good as you, but I'll feel more profesh

Flaming June? August and September feel like more like this than does June.
Nice lava, though. Lava is easy to do wrong, especially when people just draw discolored water. Lava is much more viscous.

August would probably work better but I have a flag in my head for the phrase Flaming June, I should probably google that to see where it came from XD lol
Thanks! I was trying to go off of all the video I've seen of people grabbing globs of the stuff for testing and it sits on the ends of their sticks like molasses in mid winter, all sticky and slow-like.

It's not really the photoshop version that's going to make your pictures better. Personally, I don't use much of Photoshop's power. A few layers (this picture had four and the background was all on one), the transparency option in the brush and eraser to put down bits of color at a time, those are the main tools I use. I didn't use any special brushes for this picture or anything else. What I do have is a tablet computer (not just a wacom) so I draw directly onto my computer screen. It makes things a lot more like sketching, I don't have to use a mouse or judge where the pen is down on the pad via the screen. I just point and draw. I think the tablet computer is what makes the art so much easier for me.

maybe i need to get one of those all of mine so far have been drawn useing a mouse (and mine is really small) but i see what you mean, but you've really inspired me to do more drawings.

I've tried drawing with a mouse and oh, is it difficult. I just don't have the control in my wrist. I know some people can do it, they've had a lot of practice and they just have the knack but I am so not one of them >.< I need to have a pencil in my hand and the ability to turn the paper/computer to get the lines curved the way I like them- but that's a limitation of my drawing style.
Have you ever tried sketching something on paper, finishing the lines there, then scanning it in for coloring? I used to do that before I had the computer and it worked as far as getting a drawing done goes- I didn't have much of an idea how to go about coloring at the time though, lol

don't think of it as a limitation but as a strength, i've seen some drawings done with a mouse and they look weird to me the lines don't look natural but as you say some people are really good, i don't think i'm that good, i mainly draw Anime and i guess thats my limitation XD but i do love it when you draw and it's on paper the way your bringing something to life off the page.
i havn't scanned in drawing and i don't think i'd like to, cause i've seen my friends do it and to me is does looses the life out of it unless you can put it back in, unlike yours where it really has come to life but i can't do anything like that

Can't do it yet. I've been fighting/working/struggling/winning with my art for a long long time. I surf around DA constantly looking at people's scrap sections to see how they started a piece or why this curve looks more real then that/i> curve and I mimic it until I understand why. Tutorials sometimes have explanations of things that have helped me.

i do that too just to see if it can teach me anything on how to start it, but i really like tutorials cause i like to find things out myself and see what they do cause then i can think to myself do i use it or not

Right! I was reading a cloud tutorial to see how the artist made their clouds and they explained why clouds bunch up at one end and are long at the other. I don't remember much about the artist's tutorial but I learned about the wind's effect on clouds and I can apply that to any picture with clouds now.

what i've learnt is the way light and shadow is very important, cause that could either make your picture look flat or 3D, i just remember this, when you put shine in the eye if the shine is on the left then the shadow should be on the right and visa versa, but i've also seen that ripples in clothing or dragon's wings can help greatly in wind effect, i prefer to have a cloudless sky cause i like to capture the different colours in the sky night or day.

tamiveldura In reply to FallenAngelInaYasha [2009-08-18 18:54:41 +0000 UTC]
I agree, light is really important. It's also hard >.< lol, there are reflections of light that go around curves and things, there's light in places where you wouldn't expect- it comes in every color out there. It's complicated stuff!
lol, I like clouds in my skies so I can mess with cloud colors. All the folds in the clouds give me a lot of surface area to play with color.

yeah but if you master the art of light then everything else is simple in my eyes.
true Clouds can be fun to draw and stuff but what gets me is the texture of the clouds i can never get that

I started drawing the big lumpy clouds because you can toss the lumps in wherever and they still look like clouds. I have trouble with the thin whispy ones, though.
