Masamune Shirow is best known for his work on Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, Dominion: Tank Police, and many, many more anime and manga creations.The work I am emulating is a traditional piece that he did many years ago, but I made the attempt digitally with the brushes I had at my disposal with the Instructor's permission. It's not an exact copy, but it's fairly close. Close enough to represent the piece, far enough that it doesn't look traced or plagiarized.
Mister Shirow expressed, with this piece, that he wasn't sure how well it would be received due to the racey nature of the piece. He had conceptualized a skin-tight suit that would allow the wearer to interface directly with their 'mecha, so he wasn't too sure about publishing this particular piece when he did, but it was well-received, regardless of his fears.
This was done as an assignment in my "Drawing for the Graphic Novel" class at Pikes Peak Community College.
I can also understand Mr. Shirow's hesitance to add this to his books early on, as even the printing office at the campus wasn't sure if this was okay to print until I told them it was for an assignment.

Nice study! You should draw more stuff based on Shirow art. I always failed to emulate his landmate design, but you nailed it!
