Description
Name: Assateague Wild PonyDate: October 8th, 2012
Location: Assateague Island National Seashore near Berlin, MD
Conservation Status: Least Concern
Did you know? Resource management techniques are different in Maryland than in
Virginia when it comes to maintaining a healthy population of wild ponies. In Maryland, some
female horses annually undergo a contraceptive vaccine administered through a dart gun.
This has proven to reduce high pregnancy rates with no harmful side effects. Wild horses in
Virginia are part of the Annual Pony Swim (started in 1924). Approx. 150 wild horses are rounded
up on Assateague the last Wednesday in July. The horses swim across the Assateague Channel
to Chincoteague Island where an auction takes place to reduce their numbers on Assateague.
After many of the foals are sold, the remaining herd swims back to Assateague a couple days later.
These management techniques reduce the impact the horses pose to their natural environment and
help provide a sustainable resource for future generations.
Lesson learned: don't trust an 'old' GPS and don't get the urge to photograph feral ponies when it's
freezing cold and wet out. It makes for a miserable experience. On the bright side, though, I found
this fellow! The sole reason for the four-hour drive out there.

Overall
Vision
Originality
Technique
Impact
This is such a beautiful photograph, I couldn't help but take the opertunity to critique, and tell you how I think you made it beautiful!
Vision: For starters, to me it doesn't look like a quick press and shoot, although I suspect not much planning was created when getting the photograph. I do think the highlight is the background, the colours really do create the perfect image! The horse is nice and sharp, and the way the horses head is looking away from us, makes us follow the eyes and wonder what the horse was focusing on, creating mystery.
Originality: I've given you top marks for originality because I haven't seen a photograph quite like this, the colours just woke so well together, and contrast, I honestly don't think I could look at this and get fed up! I'd love to hear more about how you took it!
Technique: To be honest, I didn't really know what to put here because I think I've explained up above why I like this photograph, and the angles you've taken it at, which brings it together so I gave you a generous 4.5 because again, the image is beautiful.
Impact: The image makes me think about something, It takes me past the image due to the colours, there not bright and in your face there suttle, gentle and warm. I'm a huge fan, and this horse looks beautiful too! Everything has come together and just made this spectacular!
One small tip would be next time to maybe use another horse? A grey or something so you get large contrast but that's just me being picky. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/let⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

Thank you so much for the in-depth critique! You're right about not much planning going with the shoot - I saw the herd heading for the treeline and was all but yelling at my husband to stop the car so I could get out. There was a paint in the herd, but she was already in the treeline. Dx

Oh, I just love this photo. Especially after reading about it and learning that it is a wild pony.
I live near Beaufort North Carolina and around here there is Carrot Island and Shackleford Banks (part of the Outer Banks) both have wild ponies that swam there after ship wrecks. Going to "Shack" as we call it is always a fun experience and I always love the surprise visits from our wild friends.
Great photo, horses are so beautiful!

Oh it's beautiful, and peaceful!Β Shackleford is my favorite spot, it's really nice just bring bug spray!Β Ocracoke is a really nice place, too. I've had a few trips there and it makes a nice ferry ride. No wild horses there but it's quite a nice island with good camping sites.

That is a beautiful horse... This is a lovely and rich photo. It has a nice composition and contrast, but perhaps a bit more editing would have made it superb. Lovely work all the same

I used to read about them in the Misty of Chincoteague books as a little kid. Always wanted to attend the round-up they do every summer, but never got the chance. =/

This is very nice, There are lots of horse in pasture photos, but I like this one in the natural background, makes him appear a bit wild.
