Contest entry!Leopard - flying squirrel - reptile - human splice
So I guess we can edit this, or perhaps the comments. The concept is mainly a mammal and human. The reptile-flying squirrel reference is the wings, and that's probably it. At first I was thinking scales, but then, hair/fur is predominately mammal. Elongated limbs for running, and thin arms and legs for speed. I guess, its a cheetah more than a leopard. Tail for stability. And padded palms and feet to protect against friction.
Probably hard to catch. I'm assuming, since it has wings. I wish I could take creature design, but I'll have to wait til next spring to take that class. Hm... Comments appreciated.

Oh I like this very nice its kinda cute too,I like that it looks like something real, I am looking for stuff more stuff like this where they look like real animal/human hybrids and where its more human then animal like this, I am writing a story and it helps if I have something to look at that can inspire me.
I always daydream about my stories, visualizing what is going on and what the characters look like, I am working on it to just share with people on story type sites like Livejournal so its not a big book but I still like to do it right, and when and if I find some good stuff I plan to link back to it so people can get and idea of what I am talking about in my story.
But its kinda hard sense I haven't had allot of luck with finding what I am looking for, but what you did here is pretty cool!

I really like the design and the drawing! Lovely combination of pinky tones and browns. I love the little claw feet- a lovely combination of human and animal toes!

Well, i must say that it's the best design ive seen. Probably in my life. Oh how i wish they used your concept in the film instead the original one. And. In my opinion you should get into the finale at least, its really worth it. (the picture as well as the concept, i mean it!)
Btw, its male or female? It looks pretty androgynous. But the eyes. They're so flippin beautiful! Plus, its not bald, i could stand the baldness of Dren *cough* i mean, that was the most disturbing to me.

I guess, I didn't give it sexual organs because I didn't know what to do with it, but it's leaning more towards female... hahaha.. I still need to watch the movie, so I was a bit inspired by the trailer... yes, she was bald... that's apparently, a human characteristic though... But yes, a little hair would have been nice.
I could probably revisit the creature again in the future once summer comes rolling by, so stayed tuned, I guess.

yeah, i've got some. Like for example ... make it intersexed, so you wouldnt be bothered with choosing one sex or another (oh dear. there's still a gender so we're kinda stuck in the point, but...)
it might sound kinda silly/crazy/insane, but that was the first thought that came up to my mind after seeing your drawing

Strangely enough, this idea does resemble the final movie hybrid. Amazing concept. I love the wings and feet. <3 I don't know if your drawing had anything to do with the character design in the end, but im surprised it didn't place

i like it. question however: does it walk/run on two feet when it does walk/run since the feet seem very adapted for running and stalking?
are ALL the fingers webbed or just the thumb and forefinger and does that suggest waterliving?
the claws on the toes and fingers seem to be for climbing which certainly goes along with the ideas of a leopard and flying squirrel, however it doesnt have a very suitable tail for climbing?
overall i really enjoyed it, i like the mix and although the questions seem as though im going to far into it i just wonder where this creature would live

I imagine it lives in a mountainous forest area, climbing mountain cliffs and trees.

I like how you thought about the characteristics of what the creature had/what those enabled it to do-I know what I'm about to say may seem completely irrelevant but...humans are mammals...and where is the things genitalia...I especially like the ears, eyes and feet-good for better hearing and vision it looks like^^~ The feet are just kind of cute.

Excellently executed, I'm kind of surprised that this one didn't place. =/ I especially like how you incorporated the squirrel features into the face, it works really well. While the tail does look a bit nonfunctional given the scale, I don't think it necessarily detracts from the piece. Following the movie's premise, this would be a new, never-before-seen creature that was, well, spliced together, rather than going through thousands of years of perfecting evolution, so I think that imperfections (like a vestigial tail) would make it more believable.
The only thing that really feels "off" about the piece to me is the elongated torso, it feels kind of out-of-place. But then, I can understand how that aspect of the leopard might show through, and it would also increase the wingspan area, which might be necessary for lifting a larger creature. So I'll just leave that as a personal aesthetic. Great job!

Thanks... Was my first creature design, and I was somewhat groping in the dark... But thanks, I felt that there are some things that I could've improved on, but no one to help with it. There were a lot of good pieces though, for the final selection. There was another guy who I thought was really good, but he didn't make it either. I suppose there was a lot of entries to pick from. And your feeling about the elongated torso might not be wrong either, perhaps a lot of other people were turned off by it too...
You should research Mannerist art, it's after the Renaissance period where the artists took liberties to elongate torso. I thought it was hella weird, and I didn't like it, but I tend to idealize figures that way most of the time....
Not going to say that I feel jipped or anything, but I feel that the judge was looking for something -- like a hidden requirement that we all weren't exactly aware of. Maybe he wasn't aware of it either. I would like to know why he picked certain entries over others. Saying it was "REALLY creative" is too general to say. It would certainly help some people improve.
