Description
This is Anw-Rev's full request of his alien project in it's environment. This is what he said to me:"I want to make a story where a large part of Earth is suddenly replaced by a piece of alien world, so there's an entire ecosystem there. While some regard "The Transition" as disaster, most view it as blessing since the world has gone through massive species extinction due to human acitivites (imagine Earth as cyberpunkish world, with endless cities and overpopulation). The air in some cities is unbreathable. The Transition brought a huge amount of oxygen to Earth.
OK, enough with the intro. The ecosystem has insects are dominant species, filling most of ecological niche. Maybe you can contribute some of them. Don't need to be too detail, maybe just doodle. I mostly need aquatical animals, MONSTROUS [aquatic] animals, the size of a nuclear sub."
"...some creatures use biological solar energy converter to boost their metabolism. Few of land animals have something similar to firearm system, shooting sharp bones using volatile chemical secretion."
With these details, I have imagined his creatures living in a harsh desert environment since insect like creatures can thrive anywhere. And if they were to be dominant, then the environment has to be harsh enough so that only they could make it. But it's not sand as far as the eye can see. Desert plants have evolved into dry jungles some trees reaching great heights (what you see here is just the outskirts). Imagine a bunch of large weeds in your sandbox, this is it.
He seemed to be really be inspired by planet Eve and my organist drawing. I did my best to create for him plants inspired by my world but not so familiar as to confuse the two. I have therefor designed weed like plants with thorns that curve and look like they are frozen solid despite the high temperature. The purple plant does not have real thorns, but its leaves are curved to look like them. The venus fly trap you see here actually uses the shell to protect its leaves.
The creatures are like insects that have filled nieches of large mammals or dinosaurs. They have compound eyes and sensitive hairs to detect things around them. The 3rd pair of legs has evolved into tails or devices used to help them lay eggs depending on the species. The mouth is designed like a toy snake, with the upper half connected by tendons and muscle while the lower half is hollow and can open. They are designed to pinch and slice open food which is swallowed with a tongue. They can therefor take several bites at once.
The orange herviore here has an organ on each shoulder that pierces its carapace and absorbs sunlight to aid digestion. It is designed to camouflage in the sand. If predator get too close, it will rise its carapace (shaped like a beetle's, meaning it may have once been able to fly) to appear bigger. If that fails, it simply runs.
Its hunter hides in shadows and can run really fast. Its rear limps have been modified into two tails that can fire spikes surprisingly made primarily from calcium, the same material we find in our bones.
To see an example of an aquatic creature, look at the sketch here: [link]
Hope you like it Anw-rev. The rest of the creature design is left to your imagination. I wish you luck with your project.

How many spikes does the hunter have? How fast can it regenerate them?

Anw-Rev might have an answer, ask him first. If he doesn't reply I'll come up with something.

Really cool, I'm digging those "Helicoprion trees" especially. The premise reminds me a bit of the novel Darwinia! Also, the idea of bipedal arthropods in a desert environment is eerily similar to something I was thinking about when I was in California a couple of months ago...Hmm, kind of motivvates me to give it a shot!

Have you seen the movie 'Monsters' by Gareth Edwards?
It has a very similar subject like this new project of yours.
Great drawing and creature designs btw
