A few characters from Vampire Hunter D, the 1983 novel.Top row - Rei-Ginsei, The Serene Silver Star; Vampire Hunter D
Bottom row - Doris Lang; Larmica Lee; Magnus Lee; Greco Rohman
Rei-Ginsei: I had a bit of fun designing him. I basically spliced together Amano's movie sketches with the manga design. The end result is pretty much how I imagined him while reading the book.
D: Spliced a bit of his Bloodlust design with Amano's cover art of volume 1.
Doris: Played around with her hair until I got something I liked. Her outfit is based on an Amano illustration from the book with some personal touches.
Larmica: Had no reference for her so I just tried to make something up with some Amano-ish details.
Magnus: Combined a bit of the manga design with the movie version.
Greco: Coincidentally looked similar to the manga version but really just based his design off my own imagination.

After seeing a bit of the 1985 OVA, I can say I wish they used a style more along the lines of this or bloodlust. It was just the style of the times (big eyes, small frames and whatnot), but for a gothic setting, it looks sort of awkward.

I applaud you for getting the hair coloring right. The one thing I always detested about the film was making Doris blond. (I noticed Kikuchi always makes the leading females black-haired while all the vampire females are blondes.)
I also compliment you on making D look age-appropriate. He looks too old in most of Amano's work and the movies (although pretty much every Amano character looks old...).

Also, I love coming across art of characters from the first novel. Mostly because they were so poorly represented in the movie. Not D so much, but Doris and Larmica mostly.

I feel the same way about the characters. While I like the movie in its own way, Doris and Larmica are nothing like they are in the book. O_o
I can't say I really like the manga versions either. Doris's boobs are way too big and Larmica's hair is fucking ridiculous. xDD

Oh yeah I've read four volumes of the book series, played and beat the PS1 game and watched the movies. VHD is one of my favs!

I just think his style of writing is so unique, poetic and just awesome. His story and his world are just so different from anything I've ever read (and I am a ridiculous book worm. I read everything.) and I love the visuals he paints. I've read eleven of the novels so far but I still need to finish the series!

Ehhh I think his writing style could be better. I find it a bit corny at times but I enjoy his world and the plot of the novels over the narrative.
