Majel Barrett as Number One in the pilot was always intended to be a strong character. Think about the episode "Turnabout Intruder" the comment that the character of Janice Lester was angry about the fact that Starfleet captaincy as being an exclusive male preserve. It was certainly cutting edge then, and to a great extent still is. Probably, the fact that Jeffery Hunter as part of his interpretation of Pike's values was portraying a man of principle and fairness. He may well have selected her as his executive officer as a way of pushing the command structure to become more flexible with "pulling out the chair" for extraordinary women. What's more he referred to her as "...the ship's most experienced officer...", not just saying so, but also implying to his senior officers that she deserved to be the captain of the ship or at least one of her own. One may speculate that if he had not been disabled so young, that he would have found his way into the admiralty and instituted those changes.

Given how much of a hard ass the Trek universe Number One was, I can't imagine how tough her alternate would have been...

Might be how alternate Pike could wind up in that blinking chair!
