Description I found this cloudedinfluence.deviantart.co…

earlier this evening and it reminded me of an idea I had floating around so I got distracted from my writing and jumped on this instead for a little while. Nothing against Colin, but Jason Isaac's Hook seems much less likely to take anybody's shit. Hook also doesn't get his hands dirty with 'light work'.

Jason Isaac is the TRUE Captain Hook. Colin's Hook is really just a bad boy with a hook for a hand. Don't assume that just because I hate Colin's Hook, I hate the show. I am still dying for the next season to start already!Β

Love this. I'm so NOT fond of seeing the OUAT version of Hook all over the Internet!

Same here! He got annoying quick. I wanted to like him, I gave him a chance, but in the end I couldnt't do it.

I've never watched OUAT, but the look of the dude does nothing for me. (Hook with short hair? SACRILEGE) Jason Isaacs is the Hook for me.

I tried watching it and just couldn't get into it. Kinda annoys me too because there's several characters they casted to look spot on like their counter parts, or at least have enough features to still see them as their original characters but they screwed up on Hook big time and there's no excuse other than he's basically just eye candy for the female viewers. Nothing against Colin O'Donahue, he's doing what he can with what he has, but I don't think he was good for Hook. Actually, the guy they casted as Jafar would have made a great Hook.Β  I was disappointed and felt like it needed to be publicly addressed, haha.

I laughed. Hard.

Also he's my favorite literary character and Isaac's portrayal is the CLOSEST I've ever seen to the book.

The OUAT is kind of like the "romance novel cover" pirate in that he looks pretty, and pretty much that's all he does. The pirate who isn't really one.

Well done.

So true! Poor Killian Jones is always getting beat up with Issac's Hook doesn't put up with that. Still, they are both great interpretations Great job!

There was one point in the show when just EVERYONE was ganging up on Killian and just beating the crap out of him, a lot of it for no reason. I think he'd be a lot better as his own character, rather than being THE Captain Hook. One thing I do like that I've only seen with him, is that he's a lot closer to Hook's actual age (Alot of the times they used older actors). Β Isaac's Hook doesn't mess around. I actually would have preferred Hook be a 'special' character that was only in a few episodes and be played by someone, like Jason Isaacs, than to have him be a main character and be practically unrecognizable as the original character. Β I haven't seen any of the episodes yet, but I did hear that the kid they got as Peter Pan was AWESOME.

Oh he is! (Sorry to comment snoop) but Robbie Kay did a fantastic job as Pan. I find it funny that Robbie played the Cabin Boy in Pirates 4 with mermaids, and now here he is playing Peter Pan with Ariel in Neverland. Kinda funny.Β

Was he really in Pirates 4? I'll have to look for him. I STILL need to catch up on those episodes! I'll have to put them on today while I'm working on my coat. I have a few episodes of Sleepy Hollow to catch up on too. One of my friends got me hooked on that show as well.Β

Hahaha! Yes! I love this! XD I like Colin's Hook okay, but seriously, the dude's a Jack Sparrow wannabe. :/ I mean, c'mon--guyliner? His love for rum? Womanizing? Even his speech pattern sounds more like Jack than Hook. Jason Isaacs' Hook would kick his butt any day. I know OUAT likes to shake things up, but I think they tried too hard to appeal to the audience with their interpretation of Hook. Yes, he's cute. Yes, he makes for an interesting, sexy pirate. But they're kind of missing the point. Hook was from the Golden Age of Piracy. He graduated from Eton. He doesn't dress like a rock and roll star. He doesn't speak casually--his language is highly refined. And as much of a pirate as he is, I can't see him wanting to bed every girl who comes his way. In fact, I think according to Barrie's "Hook at Eton," he was never with a woman. (Personally, I prefer him with an adult Wendy, but that's just me.) Anyways, sorry for the rant. I just had to say something when I saw this in my messages.

Couldn't agree more! Hook is sexy as hell but he's SCARY too. OUAT's pretty lad ... no, just no.

TaranJHook In reply to CaptainHooksGirl [2013-12-18 15:20:31 +0000 UTC]

One thing I didn't understand is that if OUAT is written by Disney, why did they make Hook SO vastly different. All the other characters at least resemble their counterparts in one way or another, but Hook is a complete redesign. It's not like they were fighting any copyright laws, it's the came company. He started off okay, but then things went down hill and I found myself rooting for other characters. By the sound of things, they should have switched Hook and Peter's scripts, it makes more sense for Hook to be an evil, manipulative jerk than for Peter. Plus, putting Hook in ALL leather is just... no...

As for his lady preferences, it said he had no known relationship while in school (both at Eton or Oxford). Who's to say after he was out at sea he didn't have a few one night stands with a high class whore, in reality we don't know. It seems fitting for him to want to sleep around an assert himself, but at the same time it also makes sense for him to turn his nose up at everyone because they're not 'worthy', or maybe he just prefers to be alone anyway. I could see it go either way (and I fully support the Hook/Jessica thing that Jake and the Neverland Pirates are doing).

But OUAT made him seem too 'Jack Sparrow-y', and yeah, definitely an eye candy character for the female viewers. You can definitely tell that the show is gearing itself more towards it's female viewers because it's making these super badass hardcore female characters, which is fine, but then the male characters are either fillers, or eye candy.Β

Every now and then I poke around for new Hook stuff and a good 80% of it is all OUAT stuff, it's like people suddenly forgot that Jason Isaacs and Dustin Hoffman even existed.

Another reason I kinda don't like this character is because there was a REALLY good Killian cosplayer I met in Florida, but he ended up dicking me and some of my friends over REALLY bad one night and it just kinda left a bitterness for the character with me. But that's more of a personal thing and nothing to do with the show, haha.

CaptainHooksGirl In reply to TaranJHook [2013-12-18 17:39:41 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the focus on Hook is waaay too centered on OUAT's version now. :/ I honestly enjoy "Killian" as a character...just not so much as Hook, ya know? I mean, Emma even pokes fun at the original Hook's appearance in one episode, and while part of me thought it was funny, the other part was like, "No, guys. Don't. Just don't." And their version of Peter is probably the ONLY Peter Pan that I will ever truly hate. He was downright scary! It seems to me that a weakness of some fanfics is that they feel the only way to make Hook good (or at least appealing) is by making Pan evil. OUAT fell into that trap. And not only did they mess with Hook and Peter's personalities, they COMPLETELY redid the relationship between them and all the other characters like Wendy and Tink. I mean, Tink hasn't really even have much to do with them at all so far aside from happening to be on Neverland.

Even a redesign, though, can be done well if it's done properly. I admit, I had my doubts about SyFy's Neverland when I realized they were changing a lot of the backstory and that Hook was gonna be blonde (!), but I have it a shot, and while it's far from the canon in terms of some of the characters' looks and backstory, Hook, at least, was spot-on in his emotional development and overall personality. I ended up really liking it.

And yes! I had almost completely forgotten about Red Jessica! XD I think the "Jake" series is adorable, and if they wanna give him a lady friend, well...Hook deserves someone. I know the show has gotten a lot of flack from people because of how goofy Hook is and because of some of the changes it makes to even Disney's version of Peter Pan, but as a kids' show, I think it's okay to overlook some of that. Their Hook and Smee play so well off of each other, and you can just tell that the voice actors must have had fun delivering some of the lines. I love the show regardless of how old I am. XD

Yeah, if Killian Jones was just Killian Jones and not Captain Hook he'd be fine, but because he's no where near the original character he's supposed to be portraying it doesn't seem like it fits. I see Peter as more as an 'anti-hero' because he's not trying to be bad or do bad things because he doesn't know right from wrong and aside from trying to kill Hook, all of his actions are with good intentions.

I actually wasn't a fan of Neverland, the only blond Hook I'll ever accept is Danny Kaye because he's amazing, haha. It was a pretty movie, they did great with that, but I didn't like how they went claiming that they were the 'true story' and then didn't touch ONCE on anything in the Little White Bird. If they would have billed it as an original or 'retake' I think it would have gone a little better. It's just a pet peeve of mine when people go saying "this is the real story' or 'this is what really happened' but they're not James Barrie, and these aren't their characters to make that claim. I can say what ever I want about Neifion Yale and Harper Milligan in my books, but when it comes to James Hook I can only work with the information that Barrie gave me, and what ever I fill in is just what I think, or I interpret and I can't make the claim that my stuff is any more correct that anyone else's. Β I had a guy post in my Sands of Neverland story telling me that I was wrong about James' background story and then started telling me about HIS story that he wrote and how he's correct and I basically told him the same thing, 'you can interpret the story however you want, but if you're not James Barrie you can't claim to be 'more correct' than anyone else.' Β Like if someone wanted to do a spin off with Neifion Yale, they can say what they want, but since I created him, I'm the only person that can write his ACTUAL back story. Β That's what irked me about Neverland, than and the girl they got to play TigerLily had the personality of a fish, she wasn't even acting, she was just saying words. Β >.<

I don't mind them making Hook kinda derpy in Jake and the Neverland Pirates. It's a kids show, and actually the way they do it, fits in well with Hook's personality. Β Even in the book, Hook acts like a spoiled brat half the time, and he is, he's gotta always get his way and god forbid if he doesn't. He's happy as long as he's getting attention, haha. I think it works and they did a great job with that show.

CaptainHooksGirl In reply to TaranJHook [2013-12-19 04:48:10 +0000 UTC]

Definitely! I don't care how derpy he is, Disney Hook was my first exposure to the character and will always hold a special place in my heart, and as a sort of spin-off of the original Disney Hook, "Jake's" Hook is impossible for me not to like. Plus, I like the fact that the kids and Hook occasionally team up rather than having the kids constantly just harass him, which is basically what Peter and the Lost Boys do. And, of course, Sharky, Bones, Mama Hook, and Red Jessica are a ton of fun. I go back to watching Peter Pan and Return to Neverland now and think, "Man, I wish Sharky and Bones had been in Disney's original movies."

TaranJHook In reply to CaptainHooksGirl [2013-12-19 19:16:21 +0000 UTC]

One of the things I noticed is that the kids are usually just hanging out and doing their own thing and then Hook comes in an ruins it. And even when they do team up, Hook still finds a way to be a butt the entire time, haha.

I've always described the show as 20 minutes of Captain Hook being a complete jerk to a couple little kids who don't deserve it. To put it in realistic standards, what adult goes up to a couple 6 or 7 year olds, takes their toys or ruins their day and has fun with it, that's terrible, haha. Β omg, I LOVE Sharkey, Bones and Smee, they're great! I think the only character that I just really don't like is Captain Flynn, I just think he's arrogant, but every else is really good. I haven't seen a release date on it yet, but Sharon Osborne is actually coming out with a children's book that's called 'Mama Hook Knows Best', and it's from Mama Hook's point of view. I cannot WAIT to see that!
