Description So, I never thought about updating something like this...

But! I'll need it for reference for Ahd'ar'ohk's Stave, so I post!

This is the set of Ancient Runes as used by the races of the Western Continent in Ul-Zaorith.

Ahd'ar'ohk's Stave bore different numbers of runes at different stages of his life. When he first got the Stave he put 6 runes into it - the normal limit of any mortal creature.
1 - Huskline
2 - Blaze
3 - Earthquake
4 - Lightning
5 - Energy
6 - Manna Weave

Then, after the death of Sasharr, he added a seventh - Time.

After he had achieved Godhood, he blessed his own stave so that it could, as his Relic hold a final 8th rune: Power.

The current order of runes is:
1 - Huskline
2 - Blaze
3 - Time
4 - Lightning
5 - Power
6 - Energy
7 - Earthquake
8 - Manna Weave

If anyone is able to make a text Font such as could be used in photoshop or word, I will draw you a picture.

Hello, would it be possible if I use these ruins in a game I'm making? The fly and Gravity ruins are something that looked awesome for a flying island with magic crystals etc which I've currently made. I was originally looking for basic symbols but when I seen the symbols in such detail and even named, I wanted it to be in the lore.Β

Many thanks,

Hello! These Runes are a part of a world and game I've been building, so I'm afraid they can't be used in another IP. Thanks for asking!

Hi! I'm working on facial make-up for a "tribe" that uses runes as their center pieces. Would it be okay if I used a few of yours as inspiration/actual center pieces for a few of the examples? I'll link to you of course!

tarorae In reply to Perlyn [2018-03-19 07:54:18 +0000 UTC]

HEllo! These Runes are actually a part of an existing world I've created, and they're not used in the tribal countries of that setting, so I don't think such an application would fit the world mythos. Thanks for asking!

I would be interested to see how these runes developed. While it’s clear certain runes, like 'waterfall,' could have developed from a picture, how did you develop forms for an abstract concept like 'energy'?

In this world (Ul-Zaorith), magic can be seen if one develops the skill. The magical energy of the world flows in 2 distinct ways: Manna Weave appears like thick and bright rivers of colour that run through all matter (with 9 colours representing 9 elemental component sources). Huskline looks like an ephemeral web of spider's thin threads that fill up all the space in between the Manna Weave. Huskline is chance, potential, memory, possibility. Manna Weave is reality, action, physical matter, and choices taken.

The Energy Rune was designed to reflect the two forms coexisting. The straight lines ending in the objects (circles) represent Manna Weave, and the jagged transitions represent Huskline. The theory is that as Huskline is possibility, when an action makes that potential into reality it transforms into Manna Weave, but once that form erodes/dies/is forsaken, the energy returns to Huskline once more.

I see - so they're not so much pictures, as ideograms - iconic representations. Can they be used to write full sentences, or are they just a shorthand for spells?Β Does the act of writing in these runes by itself constitute casting a spell, that causes things to happen?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tarorae In reply to conciliarityoftepat [2018-02-07 04:13:48 +0000 UTC]

Yup, they're ideograms!

Ancient Runes are one of several different types of Rune Work in Ul-Zaorith. The Runes fall into two main practices: those sets in which each Rune has its own prescribed meaning, and those that can be combined (almost like ingredients). Ancient Runes fall into the former category, in which a maximum of 6 Runes can be inscribed on a single object (the maximum amount of power an object can withstand before imploding), with each one retains its own individual purpose to imbue specific effects.

The other category only has two Rune Sets at present, and they work very differently. Ere Breghin Runes are like math...they each can be added to or subtracted from each other, placed in such configurations (again, up to 6 at a time) to result in some 6000+ different results. And Muzina Runes are written with intent, more like an alphabet, that only the High Priests and Priestesses learn how to properly channel from their goddess. In that case, they are literally willing their sentences to affect reality.

But none of them are used in conveying language. For that I have 15 different writing systems!

Even so the ancient runes should be able to produce up to 28^6 orΒ 481,890,304 combinations! Do you post the other writing systems on DA?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tarorae In reply to conciliarityoftepat [2018-02-12 07:55:57 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I have as of yet. I do have them all drawn, but I haven't done them in the cleaner brush work that I did this set in.

And yah, while you could do any combinations with the Ancient Runes, their meanings remain static. So, even if you combined Feather (making things light/float) and Flame (making things burn on contact), it would simply give the object those two separate qualities, depending on which Rune(s) you activated, as opposed to resulting in a new third result (like the Ere Breghin Runes do).

Your interest has made me want to draw the others out cleanly and post them up too! This is all from my Ul-Zaorith world, which you can learn more about here: www.astracrompton.com/ulzaorith.php

These look very cool. I've heard that you can use FontForge to make these into text symbols (something that I will need to try myself).

I'll have to try Font Forge! I did try to with another font maker, but it didn't work very well. I still have a lot to learn to work out the kinks and make sure they're spaced properly.

These are from my novel series (and accompanying RPG corebook), so I would prefer if you did not use them in works unrelated to my Ul-Zaorith setting.

These are a set of runes used for casting magic in my series of books. Each of them has different properties. Like, Feather makes things light and float and strengthened by wind. If you have any questions about them, I'd be happy to answer them!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tarorae In reply to LodricDorrem [2013-11-14 21:22:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's just what they look like. The Runes of the Ancients combine spheres for Manna Weave and lines for Huskline to create balances of power in order to control the elements of the world. Ul-Zaorith is an exceptionally complicated world. I've been exploring it for about 15 years now.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LodricDorrem In reply to tarorae [2013-11-15 14:43:35 +0000 UTC]

Interesting. I was wondering if I could use them for recreational use. The runes you have crafted here are variation of a set of runes I used to use in my past lives. These have true power if you know how to harness it. I still find it quite fortunate I stumbled upon these.

CyanideEcstasy [2012-06-15 08:47:12 +0000 UTC]

And thinking about it some more, if you don't mind and you do let me use these, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind if I modified them a little bit to mesh together the word. Like... 'blaze' and 'wind fall' I would connect the bottom swirl for 'wind fall' to the far right stem of the bottom of the 'blaze' rune to create 'blaze fall' or 'fallen blaze' or however you want to decipher it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tarorae In reply to CyanideEcstasy [2012-06-16 00:38:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, these runes can be used that way - though there is a limit of 6 strung together on a single object before the potency becomes too much for the object to withstand. :3

Thank you for the fave as well!

I'm a 3D artist, and currently I'm working on a project, and I'd like your permission to use some of these runes in the texture maps for my geometry. Of course when I post my final images I'll credit you and send you a link to my work.
