Description
Engine number 29 pulls into the depot at the Grand Canyon's south rim, the northern terminus for the Grand Canyon Railway ( [link] ). Number 29 is a 2-8-0 Consolidation, built in 1906 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in Pittsburgh. The line was established in 1901 by the AT&SF RR (now rolled up with Burlington Northern into BNSF), and was later shut down due to increasing traffic to the canyon in cars resulting in a loss of revenue for the railroad. It was purchased within the last year by Xanterra Resorts (who run most of the concessions within the park) from the family that did most of the work restoring the rail lines and the rolling stock that they run.Because of the large cars and the number of cars that the railroad sees now during the on season, Number 29 usually requires the help of two diesel "dummy" (driverless) units to haul the load. The depot is located right next to a large parking lot, the original reason the line was shut down. In fact some of the depot's original rails lay buried still under the gravel. Interesting the juxtaposition of the past and the present. Glad to see the old engine is still running, I just wish they'd have an all-steam consist with either smaller load of cars or a second steam helper.
There's also generally an all-diesel train running during the high season as well with at least one GP-7, though they've also been heading the train recently with modern (F-40PH, the same kind of engine used to haul the Caltrain trains that I rode going to High School) diesels. At least the railroad's still running.

Too bad we'll never see 4960 OR 29 in steam ever again...FUCK XANTERRA! The only way to stop then is to not ride the trains at all until they bring back steam! Copy and paste to save the steam!

Double-heading is something we all love to see, but it's rarely done because it's extremely difficult to do, and many don't have the training in steam locomotives to know how to do it.
At least the road still survives. Many tourist railroads cant even say that anymore.

Yeah, I am certainly very glad its still around. They're trying to get permission from the Park Service to add a third train during the summer months next year - that would be awesome!
I've seen some pics of 29 and another loco doubleheading out of Williams, but a while back, so it may be that those folks running the engines don't work there any more. I'm sure the additional cost of putting another steamer online for the summer season would be substantial. Just wistful thinking, I guess.

I once saw a photo of the old SP #4449 and the UP #844 double-heading once, and about wet myself. That's an event that you'll never see again most likely.

Wow very impressive old engine there. I would love to shoot that out away from the public with it rolling down the tracks. Nice job catching this gen with your lens.

Yeah, that would be neat. There's some unguarded forest road - rail crossings N of Williams where you could probably get some nice shots of it.

Yeah, no doubt he'd get a kick out of it. I took Buster up to it, wanting to get a picture of him with it. This didn't go too well, especially when it vented a bunch of steam. Very loud. Buster nearly pulled me to the ground trying to run away from it.

Ehh, I didn't much care for it.
'Course 'round here it aired in conjunction with Bill Nye the Science Guy, and almost anything looks like shit when viewed against the awesomeness that is Nye.

We had a weekday EDUCATION ROCK BLOCK of shit like Shining Time Station (though I'm not sure what all I ever learned from that show, besides that I hate Thomas the Tank Engine), Bill Nye, and 3-2-1 Contact. We were basically forced to watch it because apparently watching more than a half an hour of cartoons a day turns you into a crack fiend.
