I was supposed to do a commission of Firestar, and instead I did Starfire by mistake. Back to the drawing board to do Firestar, and this sketch goes on Ebay.Related content

Beautiful work! Starfire's been a fave of mine since I first saw the cartoon series and then learned of her comic book counterpart...though oddly its been difficult finding books focusing on Starfire as one of or THE main character (though supposedly she had a number of adventures away from the Titans recently, no luck finding them though...)

Do you use any reference to do your draws?(photos, model's photos ...) I mean the action pose from this one.
My biggest trouble is draw action poses with a good anatomy. :/

Hey Thanks for your comment. Sometimes I use photos, more for inspiration than to copy directly. With the Starfire piece there was a photo that I used in this way.

btw, i just got done tweaking her hair in photoshop and have it as orangy red and as kool as it looks...i prefer your browner version....so again,thanks for sticking to your decisions!

this is the best damn starfire piece i have seen since perez drew her wayyyyyyy back when, and unlike lordmagnusen, i sometimes color heroines too...and like you i've seen different depictions of eyes and hair color. take tigra for instance, i've seen her with 4 different hair colors,so when i color her,i choose a redish brown.and i too have seen different shades of starfire's haircolor. i actually love your choice and applaud your sticking to your guns about your choices.

Hey, thanks for your comments and support. The point I was trying to make to lordmagnusen is that I decided on a color and stuck with it, and the reasons I used that color were based on, not what I believed the color to be but, from what I observed. He obiously likes it to be a certain color.

well...i can see his point in a way...had you drawn mary jane ( wish you would) and gave her brown hair...then it wouldn't be mj. but mayjane's hair is her trademark.

Good piece, but her hair is wrong. Her hair is red, like fire; you're taking away one of the defining visual characteristics of the character.

I checked and double checked all reference i coudl find. Early comics had her hair as red, while recent art had it as brown or brownish red. A recent illustration by Adam Hughes was my defining reference, which had her hair as brown.

Her hair is red even in recent comics; it can be darker or lighter depending on the colorist, but her hair is red, and you gave brown hair which is different.

Let's say Auburn, which is a redish brown. I took great care to add red to the brown, trying to lean toward red, but still keep a brownish look, to go along with the most recent reference I found. Like it or don't like it, I could give a rat's behind whether you do or don't.

I'm sorry you can't take criticism, it's just wrong. You're a good artist, if a bit repetitive and unoriginal, but you should take criticism better. You got the hair color wrong, I'm sorry to say, I read several comics a month with Starfire on them, and that's not her hair color.

I was trying to decide if I should answer or not, it's almost pointless. Notify Adam Hughes he got the hair color wrong on his wonderful illustration and I'll know that you're not just blowing wind. Now, I'm going to lead you by the hand through this: whenever I do a commission I don't just decide arbitrarally what I'm going to do, I first look around at whatever I can find as far as reference. Old reference had her hair red; fine I'll make it red. Then I looked some more and it was not long before I found it colored brown, including issues of Teen Titans I've got sitting on my self. I don't follow the Titans book regularly so I thought that possibly over the years her hair color had changed just a bit depending on who was writing or drawing the book. So I says to myself I says, "If I make it red I might be wrong." I saw the Adam Hughes illustration, and that was all the proof I needed. Talk about not being able to accept something, what is your problem? I'll just say this is my interpretation of Starfire, right wrong or indifferent. If you think it's wrong, that's fine, that's OK. I think it's correct, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it but bark into the wind. And I can sit here feeling smug in my own little world, while I'm totally ass backward on this, and it still doesn't amount to a hill of beans. It's your opinion, and my opinion.

Again, I'm sorry you can't take criticism. I do write a weekly column were I call out errors on professional creators, and many of them read it, and take criticism like a grown person should.
Adam Hughes has never worked on a regular Titans book that I know off, so he's hardly a reference to go by on the character.
And no, my opinion would be if I said I don't think you made her breasts large enough, or made her hair too long (since due to the trail, it actually changes length a lot of the time). This is based on observation.

I think he just toned down the colors a bit so they don't look completely comicy. Her hairs redish brown here and her eyes are a darker green.

You can tone it down, but only up to a certain degree... her hair is not red "like fire", her hair actually turns into fire, and there's a big difference. It's like coloring Green Lantern another color, her fire red hair is the character's visual defining characteristic.

The trail is still used, and she usually has a fire aura around it. Maybe I didn't express myself correctly.

Very nice, I prefer Starfire to Firestar anyway. I love the intensity in her eyes, the skin tone and the detail in her hair. Good work Dave!
