This is actually a test shot I did. But, I thought it might actually be useful to someone, maybe.. The lighting isn't brilliant in my bedroom, since the window is to the left of those bookshelves.
As you can see.. I like my books.
And host of other crap jammed in there..

I'm about to start The Bonehunters (I found out about Erikson late and I'm trying to catch up...). I'm looking for a copy with the original cover (they recently re-released the series with new covers) because I have the original covers for most of the other books in the series (including the books that come after) but I can't find that one anywhere. Is that too anal? I want all the books to match... even though they ultimately won't since final two came out with the new cover design... which looks kinda lame. You'd think he'd rate a better cover artist. What the covers look like across the pond?

Also, the other night at the book store, some guy just started talking to me, and I eventually got him to buy a copy of Gardens of the Moon. So hopefully I've hooked someone else.

eeei i haate it when they do that. always stick with the original covers. they're the best.
i especially love trying to figure out who is who on the covers.
im stuck with The Crippled God one though. and what I thought was the Crippled God on that cover was in fact a completely different character entirely.

no its not too anal. i do that all the time.
someone bought me The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.. and its the film cover. which i hate and prefer the original covers.. and now when i get the other books im stuck either, buying the film covers which i dont like, but theyll match. or buying the originals, which i prefer, but it wont match.

they're all funky and awesome across here. theyre painted. it was only Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach (which is a stand alone book) that was a photomanip cover.

I've never read Joe Abercrombie, but I've seen the books on the shelves. What is it you like about his books?

So I took this test about which Malazan character I'd be (totally geeky, but geeky = awesome and proud of it), and my top 5 matches were:
1) (tie) Anomander Rake and Whiskeyjack
3) Toc the Younger
4) Baruk
5) Rallick Nom
The tie breaker question "Do you make friends quickly or do you have few close friends" went to Rake. I can live with that. I'd love my own mountain fortress that I could sail all around the world. And turning into a dragon wouldn't be too bad either. And if anyone mouths off at me, I've got a kick-ass sword that can make their souls drag around a giant armored wagon for all eternity. Sweeeet.

It was a 5 page questionnaire. If you're interested - [link]

If those links go to the UK covers, then those are the "new" covers. Had I been collecting those all along, that would have been fine, but I have all the U.S. covers

1) [link] (I guess that's Paran and Sorry?)
2) [link]
3) [link]
4) [link]
5) [link]
6) [link] The one I'm missing
7) [link]
8) [link]
9/10) Dust of Dreams and The Crippled God have the new style of cover.

I'm not crazy about the Bonehunters and Toll the Hounds covers, but at least the book spines were consistent...

The same thing happened with my George R R Martin Ice and Fire books (Game of Thrones - though I'm sure you know that). I had the original covers for the first three books, then when the fourth book came out they re-released the whole series with new covers. So my Book 4 doesn't match the rest. Sigh.

I absolutely agree with you on the Photo Edition covers. Not a fan. But there are people out there who love them, and if it helps the author sell more mass market copies, allowing him/her to write more books, it's all good with me. Just not on my shelf.

I'm 75% Anomander Rake... w00t!!
and then a tie on 73% of Rallick Nom (yay) and Adjunct Lorn... uh..
Then Crone , Hairlock, and Tock the Younger.
only 44% WhiskeyJack.

i like Rake, but my faaaavourite character overall doesnt appear until Memories of Ice. Trull Sengar. I LOVE YOU TRULL SENGAR!!!

ah right. those are the covers that have been printed over here since they came out :S
hmm looks like it might be Paran and Sorry yeah..
midnight tides cover... is that meant to be Trull Rhulad and Fear? its gotta be, cause they were the only ones in that book to come across the skull of a dragon... but.. thats so not right. they dont look like Tiste Edur at all there! their skin aint bloody grey for a start!!

i havent started reading Game of Thrones yet. i like to have a complete set before i start reading cause i despise waiting..

as for Joe Abercrombie.. i love his humour. and his characters.. his characters are so believeable and endearing. and the books are just fucking funny. i have a rather sadistic sense of humour which helps.
but.. his first books, the First Law Trilogy. most people dont like the end to the tril.. i do because it has symmetry and why should you be guaranteed a happy ending?
but the other two books of his Best Served Cold and The Heroes, are fucking awesome. even better.
i really do recommend them. they're awesome..
i'd go on some more about them, but i run outta time and gotta go to work pleeeeh

Rake is perhaps too cool a character to truly exist anywhere, but I'm glad he does. The way he tore everything up in Gardens was incredible. So far, in books 2-5, he's kind of mellowed out a bit and let other people accomplish things. But we all know he's still out there (well, you know a lot more than I do, since I'm a few books behind...)

Trull Sengar is great. Currently, he and Fear and a group of other great characters have come together at the end of Tides to sail the seas and kick some ass. I'm excited to see what comes next. I really enjoyed the relationship between Tehol Beddict and Bugg. Some seriously fun dialog. Yeah, I don't think the painter of Tides fully understood what he was painting. But then, knowing what I know in Photoshop, it's not too hard to change the skin color to the correct color. Not sure how that one got through.

It's really hard to choose a favorite. He makes so many cool characters. Hairlock?!?! What a crazy character! The super-powered puppet that mastered many warrens and scared gods. WTF? I really don't know what possessed me to pick up Gardens (the US cover looked like a Fantasy/Romance novel hybrid) because a surprisingly few Americans have really heard of him, but I was looking for a new author to try out and I picked it up and it sounded really cool. But I forgot my money and couldn't buy it at the time. However, I remembered it, and went back the next day to get it, and someone had bought it! So I tracked down another book store and finally found it. And once I started reading it, I just tore through it. It took me forever to understand Warrens, and for whatever reason I didn't understand what d'ivers and soultaken were exactly. And I'm usually pretty quick to pick up new concepts. In Gardens and Deadhouse Gates, there were a lot of really confusing things that he seemed to understand in his head, but didn't explain it so well in the story. Unless I missed something - but I'm a slow reader who looks at every word, so that rarely happens. (Unless I'm falling asleep and forcing myself to go on... I've stopped doing that because I never remember anything I've read in that state). Memories of Ice and beyond have been fantastic at explaining things so far. I rarely go back and re-read books once I've finished them (always something new out there...) but I seriously think I need to re-read this series again once I understand what is going on.

If you're waiting for the end of Game of Thrones, you might be waiting a Looooooooong time. I think there was a 5 year gap between books 4 and 5. Maybe longer. Those books are SO GOOD! Martin is a master of making awesome antagonists, and he has no problem with killing off lead characters in horrible and unfair ways, that it really makes you mad, but the story is so good, you continue reading. There have been times I've had to put the book down and just walk away because I was so mad at these fictional characters, but after pacing for a bit, I always had to go back and see what happened next.

I'll add Joe Abercrombie to my massive list of things to read. I'll probably give him a try after I finish the Malazan books.

Rake is... elaborate in his plans.. if you get me..
you do love Rake.
almost as much as i love Trull Sengar.

yeah Tehol and Bugg are hilarious. and they do keep you amused.
they're a brilliant line in The Crippled God aswell that made me giggle. its something about dragons. (dont want to say anymore than that, it'll give something away.)

yeah cause the entire point of the Tiste Edur were that they werent human.
eh i wasnt a huge fan of Hairlock. to be honest, erikson has got sooo many amazing characters that its hard to choose. Onos T'oolen is awesome. you just want to give him a huuuuge hug at the end. especially in Dust Of Dreams, because that shit is fucked up.
eh Gardens of the Moon wasnt really that strong a book, but i understood everything and the more you read the more you understand. and the more you sorta go "oh i know who did thaaat" and stuff. and it all starts to click into place more.
oh im a quick reader. that being said though, i started Gardens of the Moon in like. February, and only just finished the Crippled God last week.

yeah i know.. but.. i'd rather wait.. and yeah, i have heard many stories about "like this character? OH WHOOPS! theyre gone!" which i dunno. would keep me on my toes i suppose.
i watched the tv series and loved it.

LazarusReturns In reply to Tasastock [2011-09-26 05:34:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know that Gardens was not the best of the series by far. It seemed pretty scattered and unfocused in places, and the 'plot' seemed to be all over the place. But the raw energy and Erikson's ability to write amazing action and create interesting characters made me really glad I chose to give the series a try. He's gotten better with every book so far. Though I'm bummed so many Bridgeburners bought it in Memories of Ice. Though with Ganeos Paran 'blessing' them before Moon's Spawn sank into the sea makes me hopeful something will happen in the future...

Yeah, I'm sure Rake will be a big part of the future.

And I'm glad to hear that Tehol and Bugg show up again. It almost sounded like their story was perhaps done when everyone else left town.

I gave up looking for a copy of Bonehunters with the original cover, and ended up buying the new one because I really want to start reading it. I'm in the middle of another book that is only so-so and I'm debating whether I should just finish it before starting Bonehunters, or set it aside. I tend to finish books even if I'm not crazy about them. I'm really excited to start BH though.

Steven Erikson and George R R Martin keep battling for my top spot for favorite author, if that tells you anything. And I've read many hundreds of books. Yes, Martin kills off some great characters, but he seems to have a near endless supply of them, so the stories go on.

yeah the Bridgeburners are pretty fookin' cool

Nah I can quite happily tell you that Tehol and Bugg are keepers Bonehunters is good.

with me and my authors, its Tolkien, Erikson and Abercrombie.
i will read George RR Martin. eventually. but ive got so many books in my "to-read" list that i really shouldnt add anymore to it.
Im rereading LOTR at the moment. loving every second of it. dunno whats next.. ive got several books that have just been sat there for so long, all unread. >.< problem is choosing which to read next.

LazarusReturns In reply to Tasastock [2011-10-10 19:54:42 +0000 UTC]

re: Tehol and Bugg.

Have you read any of Glenn Cook's Black Company books? They were the inspiration for the Bridgeburners. They're kind of cool, but I like Erikson's writing and descriptions of action and the world better than Cook's.

I'm 300 pages into Bonehunters and it feels like I've barely made a dent! 1200+ pages with teeny little type. But that's good, because it means it will last longer. I like how things are FINALLY starting to tie together a little.

I know what you mean about too many books to read... I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing though that Erikson and Martin have raised my expectations to a level where I can start purging my bookshelf of 'lesser crap' that I know won't ever compare... my time is VERY precious (especially with the way it seems to have sped up dramatically the past decade or so - wasn't it JUST New Years 2011?) and I don't want to waste time on less interesting books. Does that make me a book snob? Nah, I don't think so. I just don't want to give away any of my precious time to anything less than the best.

Hey, thanks for posting all that cool stock, btw. One of these days I hope to get around to using one (or more) of your poses in a drawing, but I so rarely get to draw for myself anymore. I hope that changes soon, but we'll see.

Still waiting for Rake's next appearance... (hey... why didn't the little 'cheerful' emoticon not appear here?)

haha funny you should mention those books. i've recently bought them. they're on my to-read list. might read them after I've read LOTR. nearly finished ROTK. the ring has just gone into the fires of Mount Doom.

yeah at first you're a little like "what have these people got to do with everyone else?" but it does all come together in the end.

i knooow. the amount of "ok" books that i have read, that I really enjoyed at the time, but now they seem so dull and boring with 2D characters! its awful isnt it?
but i could never purge my shelves.. oh no.. im too much of a hoarder for thaaat

never mind new years 2011, im still on new years 2010. in fact. now that I think of it.. both new years ended up with me finding a guy following around like a little lost puppy who wouldnt take the hint.. :S
the 2011 one was much more persistant.

im trying to find time to draw more. i will.. i WILL. >.<
im not seeing Tim as much anymore, which helps. his whinging about it doesnt, but i like my own space so im quite happy

LazarusReturns In reply to Tasastock [2011-10-14 19:16:33 +0000 UTC]

No kidding, space is necessary. I love my free time, my privacy, and having my own place to do things. People have always tried to intrude on that. Don't get me wrong, I like hanging out with people and doing things too, but there is definitely more peace of mind to be found alone, doing what you love to do. Sometimes people just don't understand that. My ex had to be around me 24/7. I couldn't focus, and it led to the most unproductive time of my life. And I was miserable. She couldn't understand that me wanting space and privacy from time to time didn't mean I was mad at her or didn't like her. But the smothering and hovering were what actually made me unhappy with her.

Blah. Happier subjects. Enjoying Bonehunters. It's been slower than I anticipated since I've had to finish a few library books as well. Fun stuff like marketing myself and creating an efficient and powerful online presence. Ugh. But if I want to make more money doing what I enjoy doing, I guess it's a necessity.

I haven't purged my bookshelf before. But after moving from Colorado to Los Angeles, then moving a few times within L.A., then moving all the way across the country to New York, moving a few times while there, then hauling it back to Colorado, I realized transporting 50-60 boxes of books cost me a lot more than the books ever did, and made moving an absolute bitch. I can easily fill a dozen tall bookshelves to capacity. And many of those books are out of date with info I can get online for free, or books I'll never read again that someone else may enjoy more than me. I had to move from a house to an apartment, so most of my shelves aren't assembled, and my couch is currently made of boxes of books with cushions over them, and my bed is on top of two rows of comics and books. I'm saving them for my library in my future mansion or castle, but alas my mountain of money is being elusive.

Definitely draw if you can. Start small, with doodles, daily, and you'll find you'll want to do it more and more. Like running. Or exercising. Starting again can sometimes be the hard part, but once you start, it'll become habit. I'm guessing that's why you have so many stock photos... it's gotten into your blooooood!

Yeah, New Years 2010 seems recent as well... time is speeding up. So lame. Elementary school years seemed to take FOREVER. Now I can't believe Halloween and my birthday are almost here already AGAIN and I have no plans. I don't even have my costume for the Zombie Crawl through downtown on the 23rd. Aaaaaaaah!

As far as I know it's a trilogy to begin with. Might be that he decides to write other trilogies in the same world though, kinda like Feist does (there's a LOT of books from him, holy crap). If you're into finished long series, I also suggest 'The Dark Tower' series by Stephen King. A bit less fantasy, but definitely worth a read.

Tasastock In reply to Hoshi-Hana [2011-06-18 11:06:18 +0000 UTC]

right now i am reading Steven Erikson. who is AMAZING. the characters are awesome, and the plot is thick, keeps you guessing. it really is just epic. So yeah, Steven Erikson the Tales From The Malazan Empire. first book is Gardens Of The Moon.
Failing that. Joe Abercrombie. his first books are the First Law trilogy (The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, and Last Argument of Kings) and they are great, though most people don't like the ending because he doesn't coddle you and give you a happy ending. His other books, Best Served Cold and The Heroes are fantastic. his characters are so realistic because they are so flawed. and they're hilarious.

those two are my favourites authors, right after Tolkien.

and.. Eragon was.. ok. i like his style of writing. he is a great writer but he has shite all imagination. everything in his books can be found in another book. Lord of the Rings for one. Earthsea for another. don't get me wrong I like the Eragon books but there's nothing original about them.

umm what other books? i could be here all day you know.. are you wanting fantasy based? cause Tom Holt is good for like, a fantasy meets modern day, and they're actually rather amusing. like.. May Contain Traces Of Magic. was weiiird. but good.
and Neil Gaiman's Stardust aaand Neverwhere. I've also got American Gods but I haven't read it yet.

and if you like the Abhorsen books you might like Alison ... i wanna say Croggon.. or something.. whatever. the books are The Gift, The Riddle, The Crow and The Singing. I liked the story but i felt like she needed to develop her characters more. they were abit shallow and obvious. but. i think that about some other books aswell and i've still really enjoyed them.

you read Philip Pullman's The Subtle Knife tril?? its a crime if you havent

haha... Concerning Eragon I agree with you completely! It must be one of the worst series I ever read. You have a feeling of deja-vu through og through.

I like fantasy based books, but I actually read all kind of genre (crime, historic, romantic, mythology etc. etc.)...At the moment I'm reading about good ol' Sherlock Holmes and Alexandre Dumas's "The man with the Iron mask" on my Iphone Those stories are classics!

I have read the "Northern Lights"-series by Philip Pullman, but I haven't heard of the other one... It could be worth a try.

i loved.. Fiona McIntosh's trilogy when i first read it.. the... i wanna say Quickening tril.. i know the first book is called something like Blood and Memory. but i cant be certain. whether or not i would reread that and think "wtf was i thinking?" i dont know.

i like all sorts of genres too. fantasy is my comfort zone though.
have you read The Book Thief? I wanna say its by Markus Zuzak or something like that. its a really good book. i really enjoyed it.
and The Owl Killers by... god i am so terrible with Authors..

i dont tend to go with romance because i am the least romantic person that i know. im just not soppy whatsoever. however, saying that, i'll only tell someone i love them if i really mean it. ive only actually said that to one guy. my friend Kerry tried to get me to read the Twilight books... just describing them put me off them immediately.
the most recent "vampire novel" i have read are the True Blood books. i enjoyed 1-3. but i think she should have quite whilst she was ahead. there is such a thing as, milking an idea til its dead, and then continuing to rape that corpse unto complete disintegration. -__-
as such, if you ever find yourself in that kind of genre, steer well clear of the Keri Arthur books. no seriously. they're fucked up. and just, awful in every conceivable sense of the word. its basically the author has written down her every sordid fantasy and made a book. a poorly. written book. and then made some more books. and some more books.
i have a horrible habit of buying an entire series in one go. i wont just buy one book, then get another, or start a series before the entire series is finished. cause i hate to wait around for books. so, if someone recommends something to me, i'll take it on faith, buy them, and if i have them and ive started them i have to read them all. theres only one book that i stopped reading, because i couldnt physically make myself continue. and that was called Vellum. it made. no sense. whatsoever. suddenly. we were in one place. then they were somewhere else, and it was the same character, but different. they had purple skin, oh, no, now we're in a library in the middle of Cambridge. WHAT. THE. FUCK!
dont ever let anyone recommend the book Vellum to you. i didn't even get a quarter of the way through.

Ian Irvine has some brilliant ideas as an author, but his writing style is the opposite of Paolini's, whereas Paolini will suck you into a story with no substance, Irvine has a story of substance but not quite the writing skill to get you immediately hooked. really good though. what were those books called? Tower something or other.. wait *amazons it* oh he's got new books out.
Ok, the series is called, A View From The Mirror. A Shadow On The Glass, Dark Is The Moon, The Tower On The Rift, The Way Between Worlds. knew a tower came into it.
