Description
The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire. It is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering. Its construction started between 70 and 72 AD and was completed in 80 AD.
Capable of seating 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, and quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.
Now in the 21st century it stays partially ruined because of damage caused by devastating earthquakes and stone-robbers.
The wood floor in the center ring and the wooden seats in the stands are no long present. Though with a little imagination you can almost picture the way it once was..
If you look in the bottom area, you will notice what looks like rooms. Well this is where the gladiator's and even lions were held before entering the ring.

When I went to Rome I had a similar experience to yours. I left from London and arrived in Rome and two armed guards caught my eye. I just started at the guns, I had never seen armed people in public before, and then I looked up to see them both looking straight at me. They followed me right thru the airport, to the connecting bus I got on. I could hear them close enough to be discussing me in Italian, saying words like "blonde" and "London" so on.
I asked a tour guide what that was all about and she said probably because I had stared at them. And she said be careful being blonde here, you will stand out, they like blondes..
She also added if the police stop you, don't argue. They have guns and will use them...never run away from the police.
Well she was right..
Rome is the only place I have even had my backside pinched and the first time it happened I jumped and was going to jump the guy when someone said leave it, keep walking. After that I just put up with it..they think its funny. It can also be a distraction, I am told, for pick pockets, so just keep moving.
They drive like madmen in Rome, it fascinated me, and it became a pastime to for vehicles with NO damage. Every vehicle has a bump or dent in it at the very least. I watched in horror one day as a police car overtook a motor cycle and knocked the rider off. He sailed thru the air as did his bike, and he got up, dusted himself off, waved his hands at the police to indicated he didn't want any trouble or to take it further and within minutes the road was moving again and no details swapped.
It was a challenging experience I must say, but I found in general they have a "manyana" type attitude and theres no real harm. They are friendly and tactile, unlike us and whilst some of them want to pick your pocket (as often happens in any city) the most of them are genuinely interested in anyone who is different.
I made some great friends out there.

Wow, I'm glad to hear it wasnβt just me!
Never did I think it would be like that. Maybe it's due to them living among rubble for so long, that the just don't care.
I did enjoy seeing the land marks and sights but don't see my self going back any time soon. Surprisingly I found Egypt more civil.
Thank u Alice, I really appreciate you sharing that with me..
Helps me look back at it all now, in a whole new light..

I have been there. It was in the late 1980's and it was full of cats. I loved it.

Full of Cats..
Wow, that would have been something to see!
Well, there was defiantly no cat's when I was there, just a tone of security personal.
It was so weird.. Because when I was leaving, two guards pulled me aside and demanded I show them my passport.
They continued to ask me a bunch of absurd questions like..
What was I taking pictures of, what for and why?
How I entered their country
Why was I in their country?
Who I was traveling with?
Where I was staying and for how long?
Do I know anyone in Rome?... And so on, And so onβ¦
At this point, I almost started laughing at these two guys. I thought for sure they were just pulling my leg. They both had big smiles, from ear to ear their faces. So I naturally just assumed they were joking around with me.
But thatβs when one guard says "what's so funny?β βYou think this is funny?β
β’ I knew then and there, this was far from a joke. And to add fuel to the flames, my tour group was preparing to move on.
Now I began worry at this pointβ¦
They then continued to write down all my passport information and began to search through my entire backpack as well.
This all went on for about fifteen minutes, before I was final free to go.
My tour guide after approached me and said, "They often do that to people who look American". I guess because my hat was backwards at the time, they apparently took me for one.
Either or, it was not the best of experiences for me.
To be honest, it really put a damper on my spirits that day.
