Description Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) west of Amesbury and 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. It is at the centre of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.

Archaeologists have believed that the iconic stone monument was erected around 2500 BC, as described in the chronology below. One recent theory however, has suggested that the first stones were not erected until 2400-2200 BC, whilst another suggests that bluestones may have been erected at the site as early as 3000 BC (see phase 1 below). The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury Henge monument. It is a national legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage, while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.

Archaeological evidence found by the Stonehenge Riverside Project in 2008 indicates that Stonehenge served as a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. The dating of cremated remains found on the site indicate burials from as early as 3000 BC, when the initial ditch and bank were first dug. Burials continued at Stonehenge for at least another 500 years.

You should have let me know you were over here, I'd have taken you to West Kennet Long Barrow & Avebury. Both would have knocked your socks off

I really wanted to Will but I was only there for two days. Also it was on such short notice the trip, I really didn't want to impose.
Though one day I look forward on come back and taking you up on that..

I agree Brandy. I think Stonehenge is pretty cool too.
I'd recommend seeing it in the spring time if you get the chance. That's when I was there. All The fields surrounding the site, in every direction, were bright yellow with rape flowers.

What did you think of it then ?

It was really neat to finally see it in person. Back when I was in school, I once did a report on it.
They say there's a strong energy given off near the circle. I don't know but I swear there was something in the air that day…. It was probably just all the that fresh air after being on a bus for those many hour's...

All in all, it was a cool experience. I've always wanted to see Stonehenge, for as far back as I can remember.
Though now that I think about it... I really don't see my self making a second trip back to the site, any time soon.
I guess some things are only really needed to be seen once.

Thats true, like a pilgimage.
If you ever get the chance, got to Avebury. Its not too far away and you can get personal with the stones.
I am glad you enjoyed it. The area is steeped in history and those ancient peoples left something more than just the stones when they were gone.

It was great seeing people were taking such good care of these historical places I was visiting. That was also a treat in it’s self.

I do recall also this one funny little thought I had, that took me back for a moment, and brought a surprisingly big smile to my face.
It was when I first saw all the bright golden rape flower fields, surrounding the site. Immediately I thought of you and your many beautiful pictures, I'd seen over years.

Thanks too for the tip!
That's one thing about passing through a place… you just never see and do everything.

Ahhh, all that yellow. People complain about rape, it can cause breathing problems, runny eyes and hay fever in some people but it doesn't affect me. They have my sympathy tho. I love the sight of all that yellow as you know. I am glad you got to see it, and all those places on your trip. And what a trip !

I guess we're just lucky that way, Alice.
We both don't have to suffer from allergies. So we can just sit back and appreciate the beauty in it.
All that bright, endless fields of yellow... I couldn’t help but be reminded of the many summertime, sunflower fields, back in my Country.

I know one thing, if I could look out my back window each day and see that.. I would have no complaints..

We are blessed here, those that dont suffer allergies, as the countryside is full of it in the summer. Theres many a back window looks out onto this.
