Many people say that, however, I could have made it the Borston which was another ship that sunk in the early 1900's due to hitting an iceberg, only every passenger died, or to avoid the major historic event Titanic's sister ship the Brittanic also sunk. People seem to forget that major events are exploited and also remembered due to media forms, had it not been for the James Cameron Film on Titanic do you think many people today would even think about the Titanic, it would become a piece of history that many people in later generations just look at and have no connection to, its like asking people nowadays what they think of Salem and the witch trials. 
But on another note, a lot of humour is derived from making light of tragic events, as it helps people cope with events, think about how many times Titanic and the way it sunk has been used in TV shows and movies, and then have a look at how many of them have been used as satire, Futurama has used the Titanic sinking as satire twice, Supernatural used it once, and Doctor who although not used as satire also used the events in 'voyage of the damned' 

I am not trying to justify the poor taste in drawing it, I just feel as though if done correctly the AU would be pretty good, wether or not it is a cheesy romance like James Camerons Titanic or not.
