Description
Honu are one of my most favorite animals and I consider myself lucky enough to have lived where they do.After waiting HOURS for a shot this beautiful female (you can tell the sex by the size of their tails) graced us with her full presence. She only stayed long enough for a few quick shots and then headed back into the ocean. We were there almost 4 hours and although we had lots of turtle sightings, she was the only one who came on land. YOu have to have lots of patience when shooting these wonderful creatures. Something I only have when it comes to my photography.

GREEN SEA TURTLE INFO:
Of the three native sea turtles, the Green Turtle (Honu) is the most common. These turtles, which can weigh up to 400 pounds, are primarily vegetarians. They eat algae or limu (Hawaiian seaweed) growing underwater on coral reefs and on rocks close to shore. Green turtles prefer to live near large "pastures" of limu that are located in near shore waters around the Hawaiian Islands.
In Hawaii, the green turtle is a threatened species. All sea turtles in Hawaii are fully protected under state law in addition to the Federal Endangered Species Act. These laws prohibit harassing, harming, killing, or keeping sea turtles in captivity without a permit allowing these activities for research or educational purposes. Divers should be aware that riding turtles is illegal and puts these animals under stress. When returning from foreign countries, U.S. citizens may not enter the United States with any sea turtle products. Violators may receive penalties of up to one year in prison and a $20,000 fine.

I love this! I just wish we could have seen all of her. I know though, how tough it was since I got no decent shots at all that day!

Yeah I was just trying to get her before she crawled behind that rock. I was so worried about getting her head I forgot to make sure I included her behind. lol I didn't want to get up and move in front of her cause I thought that would scare her. Sure enough when that guy walked in front she turned around and left. Butthead.
