The day was wearing on when Ben ducked out of the teepee he was sharing with Aalya and Shiver so he could wander down to the firepit and grab some food. He was making his way down one of the wide, worn grass aisles between the camps when he realised that the competitors were slowly making their way back to camp from across the plains.
He stopped, eyes scanning the horses, for a little dun mare with feathers in her tail.
Many came back worn out, but just as many came back, still skipping as though they could go again. It had been the buffalo hunt; the thunder of hooves and pursuit had echoed through the mostly empty camp all day.
An appaloosa trotted down towards the central firepit, its rider with an empty quiver of arrows and holding a neatly made long bow aloft as they steered single handed.
A less strikingly marked horse meandered some distance behind, the rider tangled in their broken bow string.
The scores would be interesting, Ben thought, turning around and heading towards the open plain instead. It looked like there was a range of abilities dispersed throughout the camp.
Several more horses passed him in varying degrees of weariness. A few even had an arrow caught in their mane or stuck to the saddles with velcro where they had gotten in the way.
Ben knew Aalya hadn't really done archery before. He'd done it at a summer camp and tried to give some pointers, but she just didn't take to it well.
Finally, trekking out beyond the campsite, Ben laid eyes on the far off field where the Buffalo had been rounded up. A couple of the invisible volunteers who lived in the facility tents up the Ash Hill were laying out hay for them and plucking away the arrows, scoring the different tribes as they went.
It was a little way off from the field that he spotted the tan and chocolate mare he was looking for.
Indi was standing with her legs close under her, like she had braked suddenly. Her head was turned back, studying intently as Aalya curled her fingers around an arrow shaft stuck in her mane and yanked it out.
The poor horse was peppered with arrows. There were some from all the tribes stuck in the fur saddle pad, her tail and one had narrowly missed Aalya's leg.
Ben jogged towards them and when he was close enough, Shiver stood up in the grass and let out a single bark.
Aalya looked up, her long plait swinging in an arc. "Is it over?" she called.
Ben couldn't help laughing. "Why?"
She turned to the arrow caught in the fur coverlet right by her left thigh and pulled it free. "Because its really much safer for everyone if I stay right here until it's over."
Ben tried to bite back the laugh. "How long *have* you been here?"
Aalya shrugged. "No watch. Maybe the last hour?"
He shook his head, amused. "How did you manage to get shot by your own tribe?"
Aalya's eyes shone with laughter as she snapped her gaze up to his. "Oh - I got shot by everyone. This one-" she waved the yellow arrow she had pulled from Indi's mane "-was because Indi reared up right behind a buffalo that turned at the last second. This one-" another arrow "-was because I got stuck behind a tree trying to avoid *this* arrow. As you can see, I failed. And this one was because the buffalo almost ran into me. I think that one was already here-" she indicated a green arrow, leaning at an angle in the ground "and *that* one-" a final, blue arrow, also stabbed into the grass "-...I dropped."
"Did you have any fun at all?"
Aalya very carefully dismounted and finished pulling all the arrows loose as Shiver laid back in the grass. "I had tons of fun," she said. "Shiver's better at herding than me and Indi put together, so at least he stayed out of trouble, but I figured everone was safer if I just stayed put."
"Did you even get a chance to use your bow?"
It was at this point Ben realised the quickly crafted long bow Aalya had set out with was - somehow - hanging around Indi's neck.
Aalya bit her lip, a guilty look crossing her face. "Actually, yes. And then I decided that was safer if I just didn't touch it anymore, so I left it with Indi."
"What happened?" Ben asked.
Aalya looked over towards the Buffalo field, then turned him by the shoulders. "See that one at the far end? You can't miss it - it looks like a unicorn."
Ben could see it.
The buffalo had been shot straight between the eyes with a blue feathered arrow and the volunteers hadn't quite made it to the far end yet to tear off the velcro. He started laughing.
Aalya smacked him across the shoulder. "Don't laugh. That was a complete accident! I didn't even mean to let go of the string. I didn't realise he was there, he made this loud noise and I freaked, so Indi freaked - she reared up and I hung on and when everything was okay again, Indi had the bow."
Ben, still trying to muffle his laughter, took Indi by the reins and turned them for Camp. "Come on," he managed, dearly wishing he had his phone so he could take pictures. "Lets go back to the tent. I think you need to chill out for a bit."
Aalya laughed with him, falling into step, with Shiver trotting on ahead. "Shut up. I'm fine; we're all alive and it was a blast. I'd say it was a really successful day."
So, this is another sort of rushed piece, or I'd have drawn a buffalo for you all. I have to say, I'm really sorry I didn't. So many people have done amazing art of the Miniwakan Buffali and I really wanted to join in, but I've had barely any time for this, despite the long deadline.
(for those who wanted to know: We're still looking to move house, so we've been packing up half our things, the puppy's growing fast and taking time, some people have had holidays at work, so I've been covering extra shifts and on top of that, I've had to totally empty my room for new furniture)
So, I hope you're a bit happy with this quick image
Haha, Aalya just isn't good with a bow. Poor girl. I've had a similar mental image to this in mind for ages, and when I finally sat down last night to get something done, this just poured out of my pen. As for the story...I felt it was best told from Ben's point of view XD
With regards to the art itself...its not amazing. I have a real soft spot for it for some reason (maybe its just that I adore Indi) but the proportions and anatomy are a little screwy (that's what I get for drawing the human first
Right, got to run and walk the dog before work!
Time - a few hours in basically one sitting.

First, I don't even want to confess when the last time I looked at TT Group messages was (even longer ago then my obvious inbox messages).
But that aside, I just have to say how cute this image is! Indi's expression and all those arrows, I can't help but laugh.

Thankfully, I think Strider's been watching that for a bit, thanks to my life turning upside down And what with an activity still running and open, things haven't been too manic (unless you cound the occasional person wanting to sign up five months late XD)
Anyway, thank you! I had this mental image for so long, I was thrilled to get to actually do it, and as a bonus, I didn't botch it as much as I was expecting Indi's expression was a lot of fun (and a bit accidental, as usual) and writing the story about the archery mishap was a good laugh for me, so I'm really happy it made you laugh too

That was hilarious. Poor Indi, so many arrows sticking from her fur. I love her face; she looks almost as if she's thinking "I was dragged all the way here for this??"
I love the feathers on that bow, too.
Honestly, I rather like how simple the picture is; I don't see a problem with the lack of background, either. It's all very charming!

Haha, thank you!! I'm so glad you like it, and found it a good laugh. I really did want this to be just a bit of fun.
Indi came off worst in this, I think XD Poor girl. And yep; I was really happy with how her expression came out, too (one of my happy accidents ) And same here - I have a big soft spot for feathers and beads hanging off of bows...
I know what you mean - I enjoy painting backgrounds much more than I used to, but sometimes I really enjoy simple images like this. I just liked the look of the tan backdrop and how it framed Indi. In my head I think of it as art printed on deerhide or something. I'm glad you like how it came out

You're very welcome!
I think she'll recover. Eventually. Maybe. XD You always make everything so pretty! I really wish I had such an eye for detail.
Yes, I really thought it looked like a deerhide painting, too, so you did manage to convey that well, eheh.

Lol, she'll be fine by dinner time And aww, thank you
(I swear, if I make everything pretty, its usually by mistake XD) I've always been that way; perfectionist and sort of pedantic with some things, so I guess it actually comes in useful when detailing artwork
And yay! Success! XD I'm glad my deerhide painting came across ^^

Ahah, good to know! I can be perfectionist, too, but sadly that never happens when I draw. :C

Aww, I'm sure it does Even so, you have lovely elements to your art, and a really unique style; perfectionism just makes me take longer, really XD

I'd really like to remember to add those little details that all children books' illustrations seem to have, but alas... I should really start doing a checklist, maybe then I'll learn to remember. I always forgot shadows, before, so who knows. XD

A checklist is an interesting idea...I don't know how well that'd work for me, since I always seem to detail things differently (at least, that's how it feels) but if you regularly forget certain things, or have a similar methodology for artwork, it might help. If you give it a go, let me know if it works

Thahaha oh Aalya!
The story was cute - I'm glad my characters weren't the only ones who didn't find that task too easy
and the drawing looks great! I especially adore all the details you always manage to add in such a relatively small space - the beads and feathers in Indi's mane and tail... the saddle pad... the feathers at the bow...

Haha, she's not an archery girl at all XD
Thank you so much ^^ Its wonderful to hear you liked the story, and I'm glad you enjoyed the art, too (nope, your characters are definitely not alone in this one ). As for details...I just love them. And especially when I feel I've had to rush something, or not done as much as I wanted, I like to put in details where I can to just complete it a bit more. Plus, I really love Indi's feathers and beads. Feathers on bows are a love of mine, too. I really have no excuse for the saddle pad
I was having too much fun...
Thanks again!

Haha, you don't need an excuse (: I really loved it ^^

Lol. And I dunno - not as many people read as now as they used to, but there's still some really big readers. I'm one, too.
But then, what is it to outread someone, really? Some people may read very fast, but not read many books, some more slowly, but a lot more. Some people may read just one book in a genre, but many genres and others may just read an awful lot of one. I don't think quantifying or measuring a reader is too easy XD

My room is 99% books. Classics, mysteries, adventure, and of course horses. The other 1% is clothes, beany babies and a guinea pig...yep, got a new one. He wants to be famous. He is mesmerized by my neon blue glowing mouse. Sits there for hours and stares at it. I used to spend hours reading, then discovered harpg. Now it's 30 mins here, 30 mins there. My next book...Dance with Dragons, book 4 of Game of Thrones. I commend you for being a big reader

I know that feeling. Just last week I couldn't move in my room for books - they took over my cupboards and were stacked across the floor. (And that's one room. I started volunteering with a charity last year called Books for Free, where they rescue books from landfill and give them back to the public totally free. Since then, I've brought home hoards of books, so there's yet more stacks and bookcases full all around the house). It is literally my goal to own my own library
As for ASoIaF (GoT)...I've been collecting the books slowly, but I'm not reading them until finishing the TV series (or at least, watching up until the point where they catch up to what's been published). I don't want to ruin the show, because I love it so much. The last book I got really involved in was The Host, though I have recently read Divergent and The Fault in our Stars.
