Description

The sun beat down, pulling waves of heat off the sand around them. Ayla and Mayra had retreated under some of the trees near the oasis to chat. The air was thick with the hum of insects around them. Tiny flies dipped into the water to drink, a small rodent waddled carefully to the edge before scurrying off again. The sleepy lizard they'd seen earlier was stirring now, waking from his nap of being baked in the sun. They watched as he waddled down to the waters edge and shift the sand around. The two esks chatted together, absentmindedly watching the creatures come and go from the little water pool. The heat formed sort of a mirage wave in the distance, the sky rippled and twisted there, and from that direction appeared a lone coyote. Dusty and tired, the larger creature approached warily, water holes were a place of danger, a beacon for all sorts of creatures. He sniffed the air carefully before continuing. Only some lizards and bugs, he should be fine. He lowered his head and began to lap the water.

"What?!" the horny lizard shot upwards, his tiny pointy legs lifting his body awkwardly into the air. "Predator!?" he spun around, looking through the ferns he'd nestled into. "Here?" he scurried sideways a bit, "Here?" no, nothing there. He smelled something though. He scampered quickly around and around, checking his surroundings for the smell. Ayla noticed his antics, focusing in on him.
"Oh Mayra, look. The little lizard is dancing around!"
"Oh goodness" She giggled, "He's got himself all worked up about something hasn't he?" Mayra said with a squint. They watched as he scurried under ferns and leaves and around the trees back towards the water.
"Oh..." Ayla said. "I wonder if he smelled the coyote. Do those eat..."
She fell silent, watching. The tiny lizard scurried quickly back up a rock, a suitable vantage point. "WHAT?!" indignation flooded his tiny body as he laid eyes on the treacherous trespasser. "MINE!" he thought with a huff. How dare this mangy predator set foot in MY oasis without asking! this is MY TERRITORY! he shouted to himself. He stamped his tiny foot in anger before speeding down the other side of the rock, directly towards the dog.

"Oh my..." Mayra gasped, trying not to laugh. "He's going after it!!" she cried as indeed, the tiny lizard zoomed up behind the coyote, and before it even knew he was there, chomped down hard on its tail.
AYPE!
The coyote choked on the water it had been lapping up, and let loose the most terrifying yelp-squeak Ayla had ever heard. The lizard let go immediately and ran for cover. The coyote spun, catching sight of the tiny devil that had nipped his poor tail. Dust flew as the larger beast took off after the lizard. The esks watched in stunned amazement for a moment. Around and around the two darted, sand and water being flung in all directions. The coyote lunged and snapped, the lizard always escaping by only a hair. The spiny little grouch darted into a little hole in the face of a dune, the coyote digging furiously after him, destroying the den in seconds. Around they went again, yelping and hissing as they went. Thats when Ayla noticed a familiar aura begin to billow off the tiny lizard. . .
