I had finally gotten the balls enough to actually watch that anime (dubbed) and I must say, it was a bittersweet end. (will not reveal any spoilers) I hear there is a second season? but I want to wait till it's dubbed.

It was common at the time for servants to give their masters (or any noble person actually) things on plates... I think it just makes it more formal than to hand them over as if servant and master were equals. (for the mentality of the time, of course)
