Description I have done this in preparation for the final piece, which will be done on the bottom part of a car door. The top is going to be painted to look like it's been covered with metal plates riveted one on top of another. This mechanism is going to be seen through a gap in the plates.

There's gonna be more cogs and gears in the final piece - I just don't have the right stencils just now.

This is the first steampunk piece I am painting. After sketching and finally working out the design (or at least I thought I did) I have found several issues while painting this one. The main one is the base of the handles - I couldn't think of anything definite and just started freehanding. However, sick nipples is not a solution - I would appreciate advice here.

Well, any advise and constructive criticism is appreciated.

small trick I learned through just trial, error and looking at other airbrush work is working out where you want your darker spots and your lighter spots. for instance with your big round cog wheel? you need to equalize the dark backing to the lighter gold cog, this keeps it looking less like a multi directional shadow and after you get your main areas of color specificaly your backgrounds all nice and even you then lay out your stencil and add more of a texture if you want. I suck at laying out a plan for my paintings but if you follow a couple basics like dark vs light areas when using stencils it helps aloooot and makes you finished product nice and realistic looking....also shadow and highlight is big for airbrushing stuff...look at real photos if you want realistic stuff and see how your light reflects or how shadows get cast....
not trying to give an ear full just trying to pass along some shit I had to work out through many many hours of trial and error (self taught so I fuck up all the time)

this was a weird piece. I wanted to do a steampunk design to go on a car door. Did something else eventually on that door, but this was an idea. It was done back to front as there was little experience in planning. But well, they want me to do a somewhat similar design on a bonnet next autumn, let's see how that one turns out. And there's no photos again unfortunately. (sigh) If only ...
