Description
The final part of this series. She outgrew lines! Happy with that, but that is about it.. =Pokemon belong to Gamefreak / Nintendo
To help with my therapy in the hospital, I was given a partner. We'd both had a pretty rough time and we kind of complimented each other. This was something I'd never really considered in my life before but it turns out I had a knack for it. It took us the better part of the year, but we really pushed each others' limits. We both made each other stronger than we were before.
Free from the hospital, I knew that I had a bit of business I needed to take care of before we started the next chapter of our lives.
I waited for a sunny day. I rented a convertible and made sure to give it a nice wash and wax, like it was my new pride and joy. I then went to the supermarket and bought a full gallon container of Rocky Road ice cream. I forced myself to snack on it while I drove with the top down.
Soon enough, I saw a shadow in the rear view mirror. I was being tailed. I hit the accelerator to get a little distance between me and my pursuer. I began to quickly scan the roadside.
My partner in the passenger seat had sharper senses than I. He pointed out the glimmer of white crouched just inside the treeline, just at the apex of an oncoming curve.
I immediately hit the brakes. The car quickly ground to a halt, right in front of her. I don't think she quite expected that as she stood up, her ruby eyes wide in surprise.
“Nuu-uuh...”
Oh yes you were, you were expecting something else, but I don't think what happened next displeased you.
“Ouuuu...”
A black shadow whizzed overhead, missing us, but it quickly wheeled around for another pass. This time we were ready.
“Sergeant, go! Use Thunder Punch!” I shouted to my partner.
The little Riolu they gave me in the hospital had been mauled pretty badly by a Tauros. The therapy to heal him resembled my own, so effectively, we trained together. We bonded quickly, and by the time we healed completely, he'd grown fully into a Fine Lucario.
The blue pokemon crouched in the passenger seat, scanning the sky for his foe. His aura sensors rose and his head turned as soon as he locked on. Electricity crackled around his paws as he made his skyward leap.
The Pelliper never knew what hit it. One moment it was zeroing in on the shiny convertible ready to do what he wanted to do. The next moment a blue electric missile came out of nowhere and clobbered him squarely in the jaw. With a squawk and a grunt the large bird Pokemon fell to the ground.
Sergeant landed lightly on his hind paws. His muzzle pointed directly at the Absol in the tall grass immediately in front of him.
The startled Absol leaped from its hiding place, turning in midair and landing squarely on four paws ready for whatever came next.
I had a really unusual vantage point in that the opposing pokemon was actually between me and my pokemon. Sergeant glanced quickly to me indicating readiness for his next move.
The Absol in front of me crouched low on her forepaws, ready to dodge or strike. He hind legs were straight, obsidian claws dug into the earth for traction. Her tail stood straight up, like an arrow pointing right at her...
“Ouaah!”
Hey, it was the heat of a battle, what do you expect, Shakespeare?
“Sergeant, counter!” My command startled the Absol into action, she leaped at my Lucario bringing her foreclaws to bear, coming at him with a slash maneuver. Sergeant was ready and took a half step back to dodge the attack.
The Absol landed right in front of him, paws hitting the ground hard. She looked up just in time to see him return with a two pawed attack of his own.
My Lucario thrust downward with both paws straight to the top of the Absol's head, driving it into the turf. He kept up the motion and flipped himself over her, somersaulting behind her and placing himself between me and the wild pokemon. I could see a slight grin tug up the corner of his mouth. The big, blue aura dog always loved to show off his moves.
I had to be careful about the next move we made. “Great job, sergeant! Now, Shadow ball!”
The absol hadn't quite recovered from pulling her face out of the dirt when the black energy impacted her hind quarters and flipped her over. She landed on her back, stunned.
“Ouuu....”
Don't sulk, Sergeant is a fighting type after all.
The Absol rolled woozily to her feet. The shadow ball was less damaging than it looked, at least to her kind.
“Sergeant, hold!” My Lucario took a defensive posture.
“Ok, you've been following me for the past fourteen years. I'm sure it would be easier for you to just have a front row seat to my life. Would you care to join us?” I produced a brand new pokeball. I threw a gentle lob over to the Absol. She watched it intently as it sailed to her.

The ball split open with a loud pop.
“Nouaaa!”
The Absol looked down with disdain on the remains of the device she had just destroyed. She looked straight at me.
“Errah!”
“What?”
I looked on my belt. In addition to the regular pokeballs, I had one of the expensive luxury types.
“Seriously?”
“Ouah!”
“Fine...”
I tossed the expensive woodgrain ball to her. She caught it with her forepaws and was immediately suffused with the spread of golden energy as the ball absorbed her.

And that is the story of how I caught my Absol, Pathfinder. Sometimes we choose our partners, and sometimes they choose us. Sometimes we come together over a common interest. Sometimes it is out of mutual respect. And sometimes it is simply funny watching someone else making bad decisions for a change.
We all have a certain number of disasters in our lives. Some are inevitable, some are of our own making, and sometimes bad things happen. How we deal with them and react to them is our own choice. It is nice if we can have a companion with us that is willing to tell us when we are about to do something stupid. It is even better when we have the humility to listen to them.
So, yeah, Pathfinder is kind of my litmus test for new adventures. If she looks on with polite interest, I figure I'm pretty safe. If she gets that intense look on her face, and her tail starts flapping like a Zubat that got into the coffee jar, I figure I'd better think twice before proceeding.
“Ouaah!”
That is my story. I hope you enjoyed reading it. Otherwise, well, this is the internet, what did you expect, Shakespeare?

That was a wonderful story. The nicknames for your Pokemon are different from the normal name type, but very well done, as the name fits their actions, like Sergeant taking a defensive pose like an army officer standing at attention. Pathfinder is a rather odd name for the Absol, though. Care to explain it?

Thanks for the comment! =^^=
Pathfinder gets her name as part of her role on the team (That gets formed at the end of the story). Her intuition tells the trainer if the path he is about to take might end in disaster. That path could be anything from a battle challenge to even which trail to go on in the woods...
Sergeant got his name from the rehab. As both the trainer and the pokemon actually pushed each other to excel. Sergeant was like a little drill sergeant! =^6=
