half of you are crying and half of you are probably confused
I may have grown up with the first movie but Mewtwoβs Origin short before the movie was something I only recently came across and by god as if I already didnβt feel bad enough for Mewtwo ;-;

Most people outside of Japan hadn't seen this short until WELL after they grew up with the movie. I forget specifically why it was cut, but I do remember that I didn't learn about it myself until very recently and it actually made me kind of sad that something so important to the rest of the story was left out and I felt this actually helped fuel motivations a lot better in the film itself. I'm glad I got to see it.
(I've heard everything from America specifically didn't think audiences would like it before their movie/wouldn't want the extra run time to Japan didn't think Westerns would get the significance because it kills the "Good vs. Evil" narrative. But I've also heard that more specifically it was cut for time)

And that the American dub didnβt want to have Mewtwo as sympathetic which I find really dumb, I think it really would have added to the experienceΒ

Yeah - hence the "Would break the Good vs. Evil Narrative" - that's how I meant it anyway XD That they were so focused on the standard American story telling they didn't want to get rid of the "Good triumphs over evil" story, which is so pale in comparison to the actual full story of all Mewtwo had to deal with and STILL coming to the conclusion "Well damn I was wrong about all of this, I was so narrow sighted" which is like THE ONE PART OF THE STORY THAT EVERYONE QUOTES TO THIS DAY EVEN IN AMERICA ... so it's like Literally including something that makes him coming to that conclusion a more powerful lesson would have really driven home that message in the best of ways.

True suffering is remembering the origins ;-;
It's tragic that the stress of those events effected Mewtwo psychologically and caused some permanent damage, that's why he can't fully recall her.Β
I believe some of his identity issues about being a pokemon comes from her too since they considered each other family and when asked she couldn't tell him if she was human or a pokemon and I think he may have had some human DNA to even be created.Β

He does have some human DNA actually, itβs why heβs slightly more humanoid than Mew, and yeah heβs so emotionally unstable and upset and he doesnβt even know why ;w;

Oh god..... I remember the origin of mewtwo special..... this really got me. Β This is sad on the same level as Nina Tucker becoming a chimera in Fullmetal Alchemist. Β Β Really well drawn, and honestly this would have made for an excellent conclusion to the second Mewtwo movie where Mewtwo had created a paradise for itself and the other clone poke'mon

I think this is why Mewtwo's my favorite.
Those backgrounds are beautiful. The grayscale is really nice too. Makes the moon and stars stand out.
