I always wondered, why do people think M16 is female? Or even a different mewtwo all together? The English version of the movie was rather poor and treated it like Ash and Mewtwo never met. But in the Japanese release, Ash calls em by name recognizing em from before. The voice is meant to be gender nutral as well, and even then you can't go by it as Ash is voiced by a woman in both english and japanese.
Just really wondering where this idea that M16 is female and a differing mewtwo came from?

From what I heard there was confirmation from directors that it was indeed a different Mewtwo than the original, different origin, different personality and this Mewtwo didnβt recognize ash at all, it might have been a weird copyright thing
Also with ash, girls play young boy voices in cartoons all the time, itβs just with βNewtwoβ itβs kind of neat to think thereβs a female one out there sincerely our og Mewtwo had the deep male voice

The American directors wanted it to be a new Mewtwo. a reset of sorts. But in the Japanese version it's more clear its the same one. Ash even calls out his name when they first meat, wherein English its replaces with a 'whats that?" line. The whole flashback scene was more for viewers who may not have seen the first movie. Even the intro is more for the new cast members who were the ones wondering what Mewtwo was than ash. It's the same Mewtwo, just differing voice actors.

I think she used a Mega Evolution in that film, but that specific evolution was a Mega Evolution Y, which is typically used by a Mewtwo that's female.

The 3DS versions allowed you to upload such pokemon to the bank, and move them into the main 3ds games. and even before that, I was transferring via link cables and such my pokemon from yellow and blue all the way up as far as they could go before systems were no longer compatible for transfers.

No. It is not. It makes sense for Ash to call out a mewtwo because thanks to that one tv special he got to remember about the one from the first movie. If the mewtwo from M16 had no recollection of Ash it is most likely not the same one from the first movie. Not to mention that the flash back scenes are different from the ones that happen in the first movie.Β

The flashback was very much the same, just shown in a different style, directors won't always get every detail exactly the same. There's also no saying that M16 'had no recollection'. I mean, why else would he be so willing to sit and TALK to them if he didn't KNOW least one of them? Heck, he goes 'you' when he freaking SEE'S ASH.

The mewtwo in M16 was also not hostile at all to those humans they saw before meeting Ash, so that lends to them being a different individual as well.Β
AS for the "you" thing, that can lend to the thought that they are the same.
In the end it really is up to the viewers until word of god, the movie director, says otherwise. Until then it can be whatever canon any one person wants to to. be
If you want to go with the idea that they are the same you can go ahead, but in this au I believe the artists is going with the idea that they are separate. The idea that the majority of people that only watched the English version have.

Mewtwo, in general, has not been hostile to humans sense the return movie as he learned not all humans are bad. So it makes sense that in 16 he also wouldn't be. That does not prove they are a different individual.
I also get this is a AU. I'm not complaining about that. I am just baffled why people want to assume M16 is female just because of the mega form?
and yeah, I don't like that the directors to the American version opted to just do a 180 on the whole story and act as though the first movie and returns never happened when it comes to Ash and Mewtwo knowing each other when it is very clear in the Japanese version that they do. I mean they litteritly make Ash not even know what Mewtwo is in the amarican release.

Then I guess at this point look at them as separate canons. Like how in the Japanese version if Paper Mario The Thousand Year door Vivian is a male, while in the Western release they are female.
Plus it still fits with the whole "Pokemon Multiverse Canon".
And no, it isn't just because of the mega form. The VA is a woman using a female voice.

The Japanese VA is also a woman and voice isn't much different. Ash is also voiced by a woman and if you hear her normal voice its not much different from Ash's
