After an anonymous tip-off dropped on my doorstep, I found myself in Manhattan. My former best friend, Zeke wasn't fooling anyone with his behind the scenes act, but I admit it was a welcome temptation to book it out of the city and lay low for a while. He and I hadn't exactly been on the best of terms for some time now, but I knew he sent the message, and he knew damn well that I'd follow it, too. We both figured if it was a chance to get a jump on the future I’d be willing to try anything. Word had gone around that something had hit the island just about the time Empire City had nearly been wiped off the map. I didn’t know if both disasters were related to the explosion of the Ray Sphere or something completely different had sprung out of the wood work, but all I knew for sure was that, for once, Zeke's information was frighteningly perfect. He’d done his homework.
The city was a war zone. The military had checkpoints posted all along the streets both in and out of the city. It was like what had hit the Historic District was multiplied tenfold and the remains left to rot in the gutters.
Looking around I decided I had no intentions of overstaying my welcome. I kept to the roofs, figuring it was easier to just find what I was looking for then get the hell out of town. Let the soldiers handle the rest. Pfeh, it was more help than Empire City ever got.
I knew someone had been following me since I landed on the island but I barely had time to react before it hit me from behind, knocking my head to the pavement with claws the size of machete blades. … Naturally, I lit up his life like the Fourth of July.
Said his name was Alex Mercer, asking all sorts of questions about something called Blackwatch and talking about a virus that spread like wildfire through the city a few days ago. My first thought was Moya sent this whack job after me after I failed to be her willing play toy, but I honestly had no idea what the hell he was talking about. I needed to find a way to get this damned psycho off my back. We’re not even on the same page here. Whatever hit this city had less to with me than I originally thought… and now I’m caught up in the center of some fucked up government conspiracy?
