Description How did you manage to survive?
Who said I did?
Here's the essential soundtrack to this piece that helped me as I drew it:

But personally, I'm one of those people who has minimal qualms about anything... For the worse - or better.

Anyway, this is my finished fanart for Spec Ops: The Line (a GotY in my opinion, if for the amazing direction of this game), which I'd like to tribute to my buddy and another big fan of the game, a soldier like meself, . And to anyone actually, that can relate.

Here's Captain Walker and Sergeant Lugo after the infamous willie pete scene. I screwed up the right arm of Walker but lets say it's warped perpective.

One of better pieces from the latest batch, and one that was a delight and relaxation to paint.

Comment and critique.

Update: Fixed minor issues according to watcher feedback, mainly Lugo's head, Walker's gun arm and the mask.

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

Well first off I'm flattered that you added me into the commentary. I know I'm a bit fanboy with this game but frankly very little has actually impacted me the way this game has. I thank you, Yager, and Take2 because now I won't be touching a Call of Derpy/Medal of Doorkicker game for a long time if not ever.

The big bonus goes to how you changed Walker's look. I personally like the whole two-faced post-Riggs look where he's literally developing a side of him that's half-monster, but this really does a good job conveying just how weary and mentally struggling Walker is. I think the vision is good because while I would've done something more after the game to further illustrate Walker's descent into the pits of darkness from amoral survival, you illustrated the immediate looks of the White Phosphorus scene and that still makes it all worthwhile.

The only real gig is the technique where Lugo's head looks sorta off kilter and Walker's arm is a bit bungled up from a perspective viewpoint. When I say off kilter for Lugo, I mean that the right side of his head looks like a straight line and lacks any real contours to display emotion. There's more detail to his gear and Scout Tactical than his face/hat. You see the hate in his eyes but the face doesn't quite show it especially for a character such as him. But hey, you said it could be considered warped and considering how fucked up Spec Ops: The Line is, it could very well work. That's the beauty of the game. All three of them got broken a little bit after all that.

I noticed complaints about the greenish background. Anyone who played the game noticed what the atmosphere looked like when you saw your handiwork with the Willie Pete. So bravo for that too.

Definitely the GotY and a nice tribute piece to it and anyone else who acknowledges shit sucks in war and you're (player or soldier) no fucking hero in the end.

"We did what we had to..."

This is a great picture made off of a great scene. Love the contrast between walker and the environment behind him. It really makes the background stand out and feel really warped and creepy, not unlike the game itself.

Man this is amazing... great with the detail and textures.
I like that you used Walker's appearance from the cover art. Seems like he's looking at something no one else can see.

To be honest I never knew in the cover the guy with the mask is Walker. I thought it was a regular soldier or something. But actually it was Walker.

The quote you put at the description, that was the ending I got in the end of the game. The game was horrifying. NEVER JUDGE A GAME/MOVIE/CARTOON/ANIME/SHOW/BOOK/COMIC BY ITS COVER OR TITLE. This is not Counter Strike, Battlefield orΒ Call of Duty. Spec Ops: The Line is horrifying. It talks about how war is terrible and being a soldier is the hardest job in the world.

Also the radioman made me laugh a lot.

Good title, and excellent dark fan art of this game. Good tribute. Walker's eyes, so evil like Nightmare's 2nd outfit in Soul Calibur III. Blue eyes man.

"He turned us into $%#!ing killers!" - Lugo
LOL slow motion till the end, normal motion. Haha....

But that scene was shocking...

Already finnished the game. The artstyle, soundtrack, story and those intense moments were awesome though the action part was a bit dull after some time. It was pretty hard at some places, especialy the final battle when you have willie pete halucinations was insane. I think the gunfights were just secondary to the story, at least it seems like this to me. I wish there would be more mature-oriented games like this. I'm sick and tired of those Battlefields, Call of Duty's and other 'Murica biased games (no offense).

It's fine...the whole world gets off on the Michael Bay masturbatory films of unrealistic American military...and Spec Ops decided to take that notion and stick Americans as villains or in some cases tragic basket cases.

But you played it right. The game was meant to be a deconstruction, an artistic masterpiece that prompted you to think and mindfuck yourself.

I mean after all...do you feel like a hero yet?

I'm happy that there's more art of this game (it took a while, but seeing this as the result, it was worth it).
Love how you made walker stare at the ground (Dead bodies? Or is he thinking about the whole mission?)
Shadow on Lugo kind of resembles how Lugo's starting to show dislike towards Walker for me.
Background gives a hallucination like feeling (Because in the game, the air/atmosphere becomes more white during hallucinations).
Nicely done, we need more art like this.

The game has some serious character progression - something I find lacking in most (especially) modern shooters. A very underrated game for sure. Also, great drawing with plenty of detail and all in your distinct style. It is always interesting to see your vision of something other than 40k stuff... but don't wander off to much, ok?

P.S. I'm pretty sure I commented on this deviation of yours, but somehow my comment vanished in the perills of the warp that is DA

Tbh, character progression lacks not only in modern shooters, but in most works of literature and cinema, in that respect Spec Ops are a breath of fresh air pan-medium. and one of those rare works of fiction were i found myself identifying with the protagonist.

'character progression lacks not only in modern shooters, but in most works of literature and cinema'

I wish you weren't right, but you are. Modern cinema is downright pathetic when it comes to scenario & acting. CGI alone can't make a good movie, but try to explain this to the graphic whores.

Ever had that feeling that everything has become mainstream soup of shit? When you walk the streets, watch TV, listen to radio and even at your workplace you are surrounded by it, swimming in it... every... single... day.

The setting in this picture also sort of reminds me from its main influence Joseph Conrad's The Heart of Darkness (which I'm reading right now). I think this game should also win Game of the Year since it's something that we haven't seen a lot in modern military shooters. Great picture btw

Really good picture composition, brick hard and oddly peaceful at the same time (the latter might be because of the green backround). Your lighting work is great, and the little details in the foreground look really nice.

The only thing I can think of for this pic is that maybe some of the weapons could benefit a little from picking up some of the eerie green lighting in the background as part of their highlights.

Fact is though, this is a wonderfully expressive piece, and no amount of nit-picking on my part is gonna change that.

yeah it was pretty realistic overall, no gamd bosses, competent ai and partner ai... only unrealistic thing is Heavy taking a ridicukous amounts of headshots before he dies, even tho all others die from one shot.

but the dramaturgy of the game and character development are to die for
.

Well, the Heavy got a mask-thingy on his head, but still you're have to fire at least half of your total mags just to pop that out.

The game was awesome, though the control's a little bit tricky.

dahksinol [2012-11-11 10:18:22 +0000 UTC]

I like how all the while his determination to bring Conrad down is obviously still unwavering, Walker seems to have this look of weariness on him, as if he were tired of all the shit that's happening around him. A beautiful way to illustrate how mentally broken he is now that he's seeing people dying all around him all because of his selfish desire to prove himself to himself that he is a hero. With the environment only detailed to a bare minimum, it gives the person some sort of way to interpret it as Walker's way of seeing things: Not his fault.

You're attention to the gear's detail is amazing, though I do find the rifle in a bit of an awkward position for some reason and the red dot sight seems a bit small and a bit too low for the rifle (it might just be me, my failure to grasp perspective and my ignorance however). My favorite parts of the piece might be Walker's eyes, his vest, the magazine strapped to his vest, and that dirty rag he wears around his lower face.

All in all, this piece, like all the rest of your works, is beautiful.
