So I finally came up with a decent story for these two, I guess.

Behold, as I grow my collection of incredibly self-indulgent OCs while procrastinating on other art I owe.

Helena's father was a virologist contracted to the military. Her mother left the family when she was young, and he was a fairly distant parent. Helena left home as soon as she could, and went to study on the other side of the country. She went into something really boring and financial. When she was in her mid-20s her father died in a car accident. Being his only living relative, it was her job to sort his assets. While collecting some effects from his lab, she accidentally came into contact with a flesh-eating disease he had invented. The contamination alert brought in the military. Military personnel managed to neutralise the virus, but it was designed to target nerves and Helena is now essentially paraplegic.

Nowadays, she has gone back to work, and spends her free time obsessively teaching herself hacking, trying to decrypt all her father's work stored on his computer so she can sell it for herself. Helena is a real selfish asshole. She's very pragmatic, and that makes her great at her investment job. She also has a huge inferiority complex about comparing herself to her father's achievements. He was very well-regarded in his field, and it pisses her off that no one cares how much of an ineffectual human being he was in person. She doesn't see a problem with using his work to fund herself, considering he's caused most of her problems anyway (medical bills, lack of family etc.). She's really bitter about her past, despite not actually having it that bad.

Devon prefers to go by Dev. She's a transgirl, and moved in with her aunt age 12 when her parents didn't want to let her wear the girl's school uniform (Helena is cis btw). She hasn't had a lot of contact with her parents after that. Dev has a lot of problems with anxiety, and was homeschooled for the last couple of years of high school. She took her final exams over two years instead of one, and so is actually a little bit older than most of her contemporaries. Despite this, she is determined to become a doctor. In particular, she wants to be a pediatrician. She finds working with children actually fairly calming. Dev was on a practical when her supervisor was called to the medical alert Helena triggered, and, not realising quite what was going on, the supervisor brought some of his interns with him.

Dev and Helena met while Dev was trying to find some quiet. She didn't realise the tent she wandered into was a quarantine zone, and so was immediately quarantined alongside Helena. Dev was lucky to escape with some minor nerve damage that results in numbness in her right arm. She's had to take a break from classes for physiotherapy, although she is still determined to get back there and become a qualified doctor. Unfortunately during their time stuck together, Dev actually came to enjoy Helena's company. Dev found Helena's blunt personality and complete self-centredness helped her feel like there was less attention on herself, and eased her anxiety.

Dev moved city to be closer to a physiotherapist willing to experiment with this unknown disease-related damage. She's had to take a break from studying to work part time at a job she hates. This move, and her financial troubles, led her to move into Helena's apartment with the excuse of helping Helena deal with her medical issues. They're not really dating, but at the same time they are?? They would still go on dates with other people, but they always seem to find excuses why it wouldn't work and just go on hanging out with each other. Helena is prickly, and would prefer to keep it fwb what a weird and wonderful sex life they have, but Dev is looking for more emotional support, and wants their relationship to become more romantic. It's complicated.
