I can sympathize with Hemlock and wish that she never had to experience such things. No mother should have to do such a thing to her own child, even if it's to keep them from suffering a worse fate. However, that still doesn't justify her later maiming of Egg or trying to kill Rask. From what I've seen, neither of one them attacked her. If she had been attacking in defense of herself or others, then I'd have no problem with her giving a predator a spear to the heart. When you go after others without provocation though, then you become worse than the ones you hate.

yeah from hemlock's point of view this is pretty bad, but the lions are just practicing their hunting. plus keeping livestock is what humans do all the time so it's not really that different

Tharn! From Watership Down! I like that reference, as they are rabbits that name each other after plants as well.

Hemlock snapped her son's neck herself, so the pumas wouldn't torture him before killing him.

Yeah, poor lil bun. And poor Hemlock, losing her entire family in such a horrific way.

damn poor hemlock...
I wonder though why the pumas weren't surprised that she killed her son before they got to him? or were they like "oh well guess that's what stressed prey animals do" similiar to our real life hamsters for example?

Aw, sweet nod to your fellow WD fans, thanks!
Man, what a trio of absolute sadists. No wonder Hemlock is such a broken soul. I expected something bad, but that didn't lessen the sting!

Nothing like an antagonist with a horrific backstory to make them believably sympathetic. I'm not sure even Rask's story of the gluttons, or losing his uncle, would move her at this point.
Now I wonder what Oren will do with this information.
