I re-worked this piece: What if...Edits
v2.1--I readjusted the cat's position and changed the 'shadow' treatment I used. Flattened the image & blurred it a bit.

You have the "mood" and "feel" in abundance, and I like that the colours are muted and soft in the space whilst the main elements are light and dark respectively.
You could develop this "light to dark" touch within the background as well, like a dream things are less distinct the further away they are, so by darkening the trees behind the balustrade you would increase the models "fading" into both the background and the "what if nothing exists.." which is what you are trying to visually reflect.
This second version of the cat works much much better now he is in proportion and looks like he is sitting on the stone, so well done with that! Not sure about him overlapping the border though, it keeps catching my eye and leading me away from the main picture, you want to keep the eye moving around the image rather than distracting!

The background is a pre-made one, but I think I know how I can darken the trees/clouds behind
the balustrade.
I'll play with the cat a bit more to see if I can get him to do what I'd like without.

I like this one better than the first one because the cat is improved, however, I think it is a bit harshly white and distracting. The glow is ok, but it is hard to pull away and look at anything else, so perhaps tone it down just a notch or two. it might also allow some of the details to return to it, which it looks a bit flat compared to the intricate folds of the dress and details in Lanny and the colonade and railing. Allow some of the surrounding colors to be cast on him also to help seat him within the picture instead of leaning towards being a sticker stuck on top. Also the cat needs to be seated a little more on the railing. Just put a little stronger shadow underneath him to keep him from floating.
All in all it's a neat idea, and you are doing well with the length of time you have been doing them. I am sure there are some people who can offer more advanced help than I can, but that is the best I can do. Hope it is helpful.

Lanny looks pretty well seated in the picture, the only thing I would suggest working further on if you wanted to was the skirt off to the left might use a little more where the highlight hits it near the column. That feels a little more "floaty" than everything else, but I don't know what it needs, so I didn't suggest it. I don't think it is needing shadow, it's in the highlight, but maybe it's needing blending, or something. That's getting more involved that I have experience, so someone more accomplished would be better at picking out how to help there. It's not that it's bad, but that it the only thing about her that feels like it isn't "finished" to me.

I didn't do anything with the highlights, except my best to keep the shadow off them. More focusing on shadows right now, but I'm very willing to accept any suggestions.

WOW!!!What an idea,that entire atmosphere,the clouds and the blurred effect works nicely with the theme!!!But maybe if the cat wasn't so bright because it sort of takes away the attention from the girl!!!But still,it's a really nicely done piece!

Nice work, i like the concept and the dreamy effect. The cat is a great idea and the way it stands ou and is 'more real' than the rest is good, but i think you need to graduate the body so the head stays as it is, but the base of the cat sits in the picture itself - maybe soften and alter the shadow and bring the ballistrade more into focus, again, 'more real'.

That's a good idea about the balustrade, but its part of a pre-made background :S I can try and play with it.

In terms of the way the shadows are treated and the colors, the first version was superior. In this, the elements don't fit in as well and remain separate with a more collage-like effect than a single, logical scene and setting. This may not be a problem for you, but I thought you might find it useful to know.
