  • Bonuses:

    • Optional: +10 for correct setting - Maiksuk Meadow
    • Optional: +10 for somehow including your Tokota's RoD companion in full body - Deer
    • Optional: +10 for a short story of at least 500 words. For literature entries, this bonus will be awarded for at least 500 extra words.

It seemed as though the sinister fog wasn’t finished with her yet.

Kinnow had awoken from her turbulent dreams, finding herself in a vast, misty meadow. Flowers and trees popped up out of the long grass occasionally, and a forest was just about visible off in the far distance. With a groan, Kinnow realised she was in a Maiksuk Meadow, a place said to harbour many strange goings on – including several disappearances. Maybe that was the reason for her strange dream, she reflected ruefully, maybe her subconscious was trying to tell her to get out. With a sigh, she got to her paws.

    Or, tried to.

    And failed.

No sooner had she tried to stand on all fours, her legs had buckled beneath her and she flopped down onto her side as she lost her balance. That was.. odd. This whole situation was odd. She couldn’t remember coming to Maiksuk Meadow either. Just as she struggled to stand up again, she heard the soft patter of four footsteps trotting closer to her through the grass.

Looking around sharply, she breathed a sigh of relief as she realised it was only her deer friend, a young albino buck. He stood over her with a worried gaze, his pale brown eyes wide as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

Now Kinnow was very concerned. She was usually much larger than he was, and yet as he stood over her, it was like he had grown to match her size.

Or, she had shrunk to match his, she realised with a shudder. As she stopped to take a good hard look at herself, she observed her paws and realised that they were no longer paws, but cloven hooves. She gave a small squeal of alarm as the full implications hit.

    She was, indeed, a deer.

Now this was extremely unorthodox. She looked appealingly at her albino companion for help, and he obliged by nudging his muzzle in under her side and helping her to stand on shaky legs. It was an arduous task, but eventually she managed to stand up, and support her own weight by herself. However, moving was another matter entirely.

Her deer companion waited on standby close to her as she carefully raised a leg, trying to put one hoof in front of the other in order to walk. It was extremely tricky at first, considering the relocation and repositioning of her leg joints, making the task a strenuous one. At last, she managed to get into a rhythm, and took a few steps in a circle, brushing past the flowers and bushes on the one side. Eventually she managed to break into a trot and then a run, emboldened by her success. This was easy.

Now that she had somewhat gotten used to her new anatomy, she stopped and took in her surroundings. The mist somewhat dullened the senses, from obscuring her vision at long distance, to almost muffling the sounds of their environment, in the same manner as a heavy snowfall would. Even the air was overrun by the scents of damp vegetation. Now the real challenge had began.

She hadn’t realised it at first, but she had become a creature that her own species usually hunted without conscience. Until she somehow changed back, she would have to be on red alert unless she wanted to end up as somebody’s catch. And it wasn’t only other tokotas she had to watch out for. Bears, cougars, mountain lions... just to name a few. The tables had turned, and now the predator had become the prey.

It was going to be a long day.
