I was just doing a nextgen crackship type thing like I usually do but I actually got really attached to him and his design

Ill update this with personality/relationships etc soon! It's late but I have a lot of ideas for him and his story, although I'll need to work out how Discord/Rarity would ever actually happen.
Maybe Fluttershy is sick and the mane 6 are busy (bar Rarity, who puts aside her work for Shy), and she and Discord both want to take care of her. They're a little (very) competitive and bicker over who gets to make the food or go on a medicine run, until Fluttershy takes a turn for the worse. They immediately throw their little spat out the window and focus on Fluttershy. When she finally wakes up feeling like new, she finds Rarity and Discord squashed together on the couch, dead asleep. They're both sick when they wake up, and Rarity acts as though nothing happened, but Discord will never let her forget their little bonding moment.
Discord allows Rarity to loosen up a bit, and she finds herself laughing a lot more with him. Her breakdowns happen less often overall, and she's alone for far fewer. Discord ends up being very helpful, and brings a little comfort into her life like only a noodly chaos god can. He, in turn, finds that the public seems a bit less judgmental of him. If Rarity likes him, then why should they be afraid? Of course, there are still ponies out there that don't trust or like him, but Rarity's bold defense of her friends keeps them a very safe distance away. Rarity is almost aggressively protective, and equally supportive, which is a boost that Discord needs. He's wary of the judgmental public eye, knows how much some of them loathe him, how they think he's a monster. Rarity tells him what she knows: that he's beautiful and unique, he's come so much farther from where he began.

I might change how they initially get closer? Fluttershy is a mutual connection but it feels a bit like I'm using her to kick off their relationship, so it might become something like a situation where Discord is getting harassed or Rarity finds him rolling around in the dust by a quarry, maybe wriggling among some flowers in a field like a weirdo. Where does he go when hes not in the show? His little realm thing? I kinda hc that he just lurks in secluded areas, creating little rain clouds and making lizards kiss when he's bored and Fluttershy is busy. And maybe thats where this second scenario comes into play? Rarity is on her way to collect some new gems and instead finds Discord, covered in lizards and napping near the entrance of a cave. She ends up inviting him to gather gems with her, chat a little, catch up. When he asks why the Diamond dogs are obviously clearing out of the area, she's far too embarrassed to answer, which only encourages him.
