Monday - Tips & Tricks

Art class is in session!
theCHAMBA has created a tutorial on using line weight to add depth to your art!

Follow along with his tutorial and try out the techniques.

Step One
Outline your subject (character, shape, object)
Begin by fully outlining your piece. Any subject is fine! Be as clean and clear with your marks as possible to set yourself up for inking.
Step Two
Ink the furthest point from view with the thinnest line you will use
Go over your outline with the thinnest line you will use in your entire piece. By Inking the entire piece with the thinnest line you're comfortable with it will work as a solid base to build upon.
Step Three
As the viewer's perspective gets closer, outline with a thicker line
Looking at the subject of the fully lined piece, choose the part which you feel would be closest to the viewer's eyes in regards to perspective. Using a thicker point pen (or larger sized pixel width for digital), apply a thicker line to the parts that you've determined as being closer in the viewer's perspective.
Step Four
Apply these weights to all elements in your composition
Once you have established steps two and three you will have the thickest (nearest) and thinnest (furthest) line work to work from as guidelines for your piece's perspective. Now apply this to the rest of your outline by adding weight relative to depth — you can do this by using different thickness brushes, or adding multiple line passes with the same brush, increasing in thickness as you move from the background through to the foreground!
