Hello This drawing is amazing! It looks so real!
I'm drawing Taylor Swift at the moment, i'd really appreciate it if you took a look at it because i'm finding it hard to make it look realistic.

Hi, I'm so sorry for this late reply I haven't been active on DA much. Anyway thanks a lot and for providing a link to your work, it really helps.
One thing I have to say is try to draw the hair in groups first. Focus on the different shades of the hair before you go into details. For example like the basic hair shade, usually medium grey, to the highlights and then the dark shadows to help make it pop out.
Shade in the hair with a medium grey, but try to avoid shading in the bright areas of her hair (highlights). You can use your eraser to define the highlights after. Then go in darker for the shadowy areas of her hair.
What we're trying to do is to shade in the locks to make it look like there's a lot of hair all grouped up. Then you can go over it after with maybe a few strands to give it the illusion that there's a bunch of hair all grouped up. Also, don't be afraid to go darker with the shades especially for her skin.
Let me know if anything is confusing, I'll try to show it on your drawing if necessary. If you can provide a reference picture, it would help also.

Wow thanks a ton! I drew it from the album cover and I found the same picture online... [link]
It looks way different when it's bigger but I guess that's beside the point.
Would you say that it is more difficult to shade with only a regular no. 2 pencil?
I see that I need to go much darker with shading. I tried that on my Daniel Radcliff pic. ([link] ) but it seemed hard to go really dark where I needed to because of the pencil. But hey maybe it's not the pencil at all, lol.
I mostly made up what I drew for the hair on mine, except for a few choice pieces (like the bang-type piece over her forehead) so you'll notice my hair doesn't match the reference pic's hair.
Thank you so much for your advice and for replying!

Hey not a problem, I'm very glad to help in any way I can. But yea it is the pencil, sorry lol. It is very difficult to go really dark with just a No.2 pencil. I recommend getting 4B to 6B drawing pencils.
Your Daniel Radcliff drawing is amazing btw, you did a great job. If you go over the shades again with the drawing pencils, you can make it look even better.
That's fine if you make it up, as long as it looks right. Also, it's best to work with pictures that are high in resolution because you can see all the details.

Yay! I can blame the pencil! Haha. I KNEW it!
Thank you! I am pretty proud of it
Agreed. Usually I draw from pix I can actually hold in my hand. I have yet to try drawing from a computer image.
Thanks again! Means a lot~!

I've been there. It's easier to draw an image from a computer in my opinion because you can zoom in and out and see all the little details without squinting really hard lol.
Anytime, I can't wait to see the results

Hey not bad. The proportions looks great.
I'd say what it's probably missing are the highlights in the hair and maybe some darker tones on his skin. Although it really depends on the reference.

How did you get the hair to look curly?? Please send me a message saying how, because when I draw the hair it doesn't look as curly and glossy. Do you think you can help me??!!??

Hey, sorry for the late reply I don't really check my messages often. I would love to help you out. I have to say it really depends on the picture and hair color. If you could show me your reference so I can see how the hair looks, I'd be more than happy to explain.

Well a picture like yours I guess. I mean, I can draw hair and I have drawn a picture of Taylor, but I'd like to do one showing her hair.

TeamMatrix12 In reply to marshmellowmafia [2010-11-06 03:11:54 +0000 UTC]
I'll try my best to explain step by step as I don't have any tutorials. The way I draw hair in general is to focus on drawing locks of hair instead of drawing single strands. It's easier to imagine sections of the hair grouped together than seeing so many waves of hair going in different directions.
There's usually 3 shades that you have to worry about, light(highlight) medium(base) dark(shadows). I usually start with a basic medium shade and avoid the highlight areas. As I progress, I'd give it a darker layer of shade each time until I'm comfortable with the tone. Don't be afraid to go darker with the shadows and use an eraser to help shape the highlights.
*make sure to keep your eraser clean before you use it. Having too much lead on the eraser may give you unwanted "dirty" spots that's hard to get rid of on paper.
I hope this isn't too confusing and sorry for getting back to you so late.
