Yes, that is the number 8.
It's sort of a long story...
I'll try to make it short-
This was all a big important political issue in California during 2008 and 2009.
It was voted by the state after many years of work, for same-sex couples to be able to be married, just like any other couple. It was a huge accomplishment.
Then Spring/Summer of 2008, it came out that "they" [I don't want to get into, "WHO"] were putting on the voters' ballot for November of 2008,
to take those Equal Rights *away* again.
This was known as Proposition 8. Proposition 8 was for taking away the rights that same-sex couples has finally won after many years of trying and winning in the FIRST vote.
So their opposite campaign was NO on 8.
Those No on 8 buttons say NO or they have a line through the.
But, Proposition 8 won, just barely!
However, the fight still goes on, they are working to "Repeal Proposition 8" which means to get their rights back, again.
They just want Equal Rights. It's under the Human Rights Campaign, which seek to fight for Equal Rights in lots of ways.
Okay, I hope that helped.

Thank you for telling me about the category mistake. If no one did, I would have never noticed. I've been very very tired lately.

i seee.. yea you were very helpful !
well i am not with the "same-sex marriage" .. marriage is supposed to be between a man and a woman, thats the REAL marriage
Our religion prohibits same-sex marriage
but anyways, thanks for the description on "no on 8"

Well, I don't want to get into a debate, at all. That was the whole BOLDED reason under my original artist comments was to be able to post these photos under photojournalism without criticism or debate or negative feedback or you know, whatever, regarding the *subject matter*
But once you noticed AND asked about the 8, I well, I felt I should actually tell the truth of the meaning of the difficult struggle many people have had just to have the same rights has anyone else.
Gay people respect the rights of those religions who see marriage as only between a man and a woman. They understand they believe that is what is real for those religions. That's perfectly fine.
They simply have been fighting for the same rights as anyone else. Their beliefs are marriage between whatever two people that love each other. And their beliefs fall under all Equal Rights and Human Rights groups and campaigns, and most of all, love.
