I decided it was finally time to start the cloning experiment. Too much work, with not enough hooves. I needed a proper assistant, one who could match me in intellect.

"Computer, initiate cloning device, reroute all power to terminal one."

(This is it. The final test. It either succeeds, or fails.)

"Reroute complete. Cloning begins in five seconds."

(And now, the moment of truth.)

"Fatal error; terminal one overload."

I couldn't believe it. All my calculations, useless. Then the machine exploded. Thousands of tiny fragments struck me with the force of bullets, seeming to last forever. Then, as soon as it had begun, it ended. I looked up, still dazed at what happened. I squinted through the smoke, trying to see if the subject had survived. And there it lay, a black lump on the ground, still.

I stumbled over, seeing if it was alive, or just another piece of machinery.

It was the subject. And alive, but unconscious. But not quite my perfect clone. He was black, instead of gray, and his mane was darker.

"Computer, initiate reboot. Redirect power to normal status. Prepare a life support pod as well."

I needed to see if the experiment was indeed complete.

Chapter 1 part 2; The Discovery

Mere hours after hooking up the creation to life support, it responded to me.

"Wha...? Where am I?"

It seemed impossible to me, but it was real. Finally complete. Months of work paid off.

"You should relax. You are safe here."

"Okay."

He fell asleep again. Not surprising, honestly.

A few days later, he was out of life support. Time to see if he knew anything.

"So, do you have a name?"

"A name? I don't think so, but what is yours? And am I a clone?"

He's smarter than I thought.

"Well, I'm Tech Flash, and yes, you are a clone."

Things may get difficult very soon.

"Well, if I'm you're clone and your name is Tech Flash, can I go by Zero Tech?"

He is definitely my clone, but probably more powerful. Who knows what cloning does.

"Absolutely. I created you to help me out around my lab."

"I feel like I've always wanted to work at a lab."

The science committee will flip when they see this.

"Excellent. Let's get started."

Chapter 1 part 3; The Incident

"Zero, did you move the servers?"

"Oh yeah, forgot to tell you. They're in the basement now."

Convenient. I was about to do that myself.

"Thanks Zero, this task was going to wait until tomorrow, but we can do it now."

"What is it?"

"We've got to move this tesla coil. A new shipment will be here soon, and we need the space."

"Got it."

"You got it on your end?"

"Yes."

"Good. 3, 2, 1, lift!"

The tesla coil lifted into the air, thanks to magic.

"Uh, I feel strange."

I felt a shift in energy around the tesla coil. I realized it was still connected to a battery. Zero must have hit the switch by mistake.

The first bolt came arcing down, a brilliant white, lighting up the lab, and striking Zero straight on the back. He fell over, out cold. The lack of his magic made the tesla coil unstable, and it started to topple, leaning towards the body of my assistant. Everything seemed to slow from there. I was paralyzed by what was to be. The coil eventually lost balance, and fell, onto the unconscious body of Zero. It smashed open, discharging the million volts of stored energy into a single, blinding white ball.

"Zero?"

I stumbled over to him again, thinking about the first time I had done this. Nothing looked different at first, but then I saw it. His horn was broken. I didn't know if he would survive this.

"Ugh...."

Or maybe he would.

"You."

Or, then again, not.

"You did that on purpose, didn't you?"

"I don't think I did..."

"You dropped that coil on me because you knew I was smarter and more powerful that you, didn't you?"

This isn't good.

"Zero, I swear, it was an accident."

"NO!"

I looked at him. His eyes. They were missing something. They were different, but indescribable.

"Zero, just calm down and-"

The first blast came, knocking me off my hooves.

"You tried to kill me!"

"Zero, I-"

I froze. He was growing. The lights started to flicker.

"If you want to get rid of me, you'll have to fight me fairly. One on one. No weapons. Just magic."

This is bad.

"FIGHT ME!"

"I really don't want to do this Zero..."

But there was no other choice. So we fought.

But finally, I beat my creation.

"You may have beaten me now. But I will return and kill you for trying to kill me!"

And he was gone, but I had a feeling it wasn't the last time we would meet.
