Cosplay: From Fandom To Indentity

Goddess with Black Wing

Welcome to a whole new level.

Cosplay is taking over the world and our only surprise is what took it so long. There is so much to explore in this current Cosplay crusade. Let’s take a look beyond the headlines and thriving Con event circuit and get to the heart of what makes Cosplay so special to so many around the Earth Sphere. This is your chance to share with us the important elements, storylines, issues, and community members you would like to see highlighted.

To get this party started we’re running a series of profiles and tutorials throughout October starting with Lillyxandra .

Now there is the ongoing process of the multiplying and diversifying of distinct cosplay communities into so many different ways of coming together, online and in–person, to express themselves (not just becoming characters from manga, anime, comic books, graphic novels, videogames, TV & movies, but also transforming themselves with renaissance, fetish, “furry”, gender–reversal and even entirely Virtual immersions). It seems to us that what had once been an expression of group fandom, and then morphed into a sort of mass “political” expression of a specific cultural sensibility—is now becoming something more for some: a true commitment to a set of pop cultural characters, in their world and according to their rules and ethos.

Cosplay is my way of showing my dedication to my favorite comic, film or game. When I cosplay, I say, “I love this character, and I want to bring it to life.” I've put literal blood, sweat, and tears into my costumes, and the final transformation has always been worth it.”

Halloween costume play has come a very long way.

It’s passed even beyond consumer culture fandom and now become an important part of who we are—our virtual identity. Who can even speculate on where things are ultimately going? At least, right now, rather than being circumscribed in your “identity” at all times by where you were born and to whom you were born… now it’s possible to don the costume of whomever you have chosen to be—the “identity” that is your free choice, not the one the world “gave” you without your permission. That just might be a really great thing, even if it is for just a week, or weekend, at a convention somewhere in the world, we can all go on a voyage of discovery to find out the person we truly are.

One of the greatest experiences in cosplaying is seeing the face of a complete stranger light up when they see you, because they are suddenly standing face to face with their favorite character. The passion fans have is simply inspiring. They shout your character’s name from across the convention hall as they brave the crowds to get close to you, or tap your shoulder while you check your phone, and wait eagerly but patiently while you are engaged in conversations to ask for a photo. Knowing that your little expression of fandom love has brightened the day of another human being justifies all the stress and money that goes into building a cosplay.”

Cosplay is a driving force in my life, it allows me to become other people or things for a short period of time, even if my style of cosplay isn't the technical norm. Creating the costume, the props, the makeup, it’s all like a sense of balance you need to attain to feel you've done something correctly. It's very zen.”

What is Cosplay to me… hmmm… I could say it’s about giving the actress in me a chance to shine, or that I just like to play dress up, but honestly it’s about connecting. Connecting with my imagination, connecting with the artist inside me, connecting with other people from all over the world and every walk of life. This is a community and when you walk around a Con or a Faire or a Masquerade, there is an immediate sense of connection that we are all sharing this experience. With an unspoken understanding, we all acknowledge each other as if we are all part of the same tribe, and there’s an immediate sense of belonging, acceptance and encouragement. It’s incredibly empowering.”

I'm part of bristol anime club and we have many members who are avid cosplayers including [link] [link] and [link] who all do cons (some even help out such as dj at cons) every single year without fail and make their own costumes from scratch.I've kind of grown out of myself although ive got a poison ivy coplsay in the making but On DA there are some incredilby talented cosplayers out there and I'm sorry if any of the below have already been mentioned as they are amazing, if your looking for inspiration, well look here first

I absolutely adore many cosplay artists. They go completely into character, and some seem like they popped right out of the screen or book or song. It's simply amazing, considering the difficulties in styling hair and characters with oddly colored irises or sclera, or odd body shapes or appendages. The thing I find most amazing is when women pass themselves off flawlessly as males (breasts are cumbersome).

Cosplaying is an excellent physical artistic outlet, and you get to pay homage to the artist to boot.

I think that cosplay is also a really good way for fans of the same thing to find each other and collaborate and talk, and is also a way for those who already know each other to become closer.

I would love to cosplay either Tavros Nitram or just about any Vocaloid right now, mostly Luka though (I know, pretty mainstream interests). I have a friend who is very interested in cosplaying right now, and we are planning on finding a con to go to together soon.

i think the making of the cosplay is an interesting thing that most don't go into. (it like people think that it's a trade secret or something....shouldn't we share information and all that?)

i like fanime and yaoi con (though yaoi-con just moved cities and now i can't go) offer a good variety.you have ones that are for the WCS (world cosplay summit) all the way down to just beginners.

ahhh that a hard one-as i have 5 different ones just for fanime this year. but Toph from Last Airbender, and EZio from AC revelations. (working on those ^^)

As a cosplayer myself(Raven-Teen Titans, Rogue-X-men, Coming soon: Capitol Citizen-Hunger Games)-I am very interested in the fashion and makeup part of it, what people buy/make, where they get it, how they customize it etc. -if your going to cosplay FOR REAL you don't just swing by walmart and pick up a lame, ill-fitting costume, smack it on, and call it good....no, it takes work, effort, and money to come up with a special identity and take on a character. When it comes together...its a beautiful thing.

Personally, I too thought, at first cosplayers had little to no social life, hence the dressing up. PLus, for a long time, I thought Halloween was supposed to be for kids ('cause, Halloween is very commercialized here in the US, and not the true celebration it generally was waay back when). But, then, I see clips and stills of people at the cons and remember that, yeah, it really was fun to dress up as something as you weren't. But like what's been previously mentioned, shall we say fat? guys or gals in costumes that aren't supposed to be fat really kinda turns you off of costuming. My one regret? Lack of resources on my part. But, doesn't mean I can't plan. For me, I suppose I could go as a character whose face you see, but, I prefer the darkness of the shadows as it were. So, faceplate or mask for me. Or a costume that completely hides me. My one dream one to make would be the Gigantic Guyver, as a 1:1 scale. Saw a guy who did a 1:1 Halo Elite, and got inspired. Of course, the Gigantic is something like 9 feet tall over all. That would mean almost 2 1/2 feet high stilts for me. I could go as a SPARTAN, but, I'd be on the short end of that. There are others, but none that I'm really interested in. Plus, the regular height Guyvers have been done pretty well and truly thoroughly. It's like watching a guy beat a dead horse with a few large trees.

In some of the other no-no's I've seen done in stills:
A fat guy in an old school Tron suit. Not Pretty. Cheap costume too.
Fat Spiderman. That was not fun to see. Not exactly a great costume either.

I got nothing against a cheap costume as long as it comes close to what it should be, and is at least semi-realistic. Just, make sure you're the right porportions for the guy/gal you're going as. It's pretty funny to see plenty of gals dress up as Duo Maxwell from Gundam Wing. I've seen some that are quite excellent. There are some that really do pull that look off, and make it work.

    1. The hard work people put into making or getting their costume. Some people have no idea how hard it is to make even a simple dress sometimes when you don't have a pattern.

    2. is an amazing Axis Powers Hetalia cosplayer!

    3. People need to see the difference between store bought costumes and home made ones. Yes, store bought ones look nicer but, you can tell it was probably made by a machine. Where as home made ones have little imperfections that maybe you can't see but make it unique and special to the person who made it.

    4. In Phoenix, AZ there's a Matsuri festival that has great cosplayers that look amazing and it almost seems like they are the character.

    5. My next cosplay is going to either be Kyoko from Skip Beat or female England from APH.

"Which elements of the Cosplay movement would you like to see highlighted?" The arts and skills behind it. People pick up so many skills and talents that hardly any other hobby can possibly provide simultaneously- I've learned to sew, style wigs, make jewelry and accessories, paint shoes and fabric, create props, apply cosmetics, and so much more. I've even learned about time and money management!

"Are there any elements in Cosplay that never seem to get mentioned that you feel need to be brought to the forefront of the conversation?" A lot of cosplayers pick up this hobby for themselves. They don't do it for attention, and they certainly don't do it so people can rep on their looks- especially body. Body types are only important if you're a model. It doesn't make the ACTUAL cosplay any better or worse. Cosplay = wearing a costume, not necessarily being an hourglass, or toned and buff.

Oh yeah, and some of us don't cosplay to make a statement or change identities or anything profound like that. Personally, I just do it because I like to learn and create things. Reveling in final product makes me feel proud, and I just love to be able to show people I made it. At the same time, because our bodies become the "canvas" so to speak, seeing the transformation from your everyday clothes and face into something different or fantastic is really enthralling- like seeing a beautiful sunset. It's the same old sky, but with a different look to it.

Considering that cosplay does become paramount in its ability and capacity to take people far away from their own identities, should we be careful in our characterisations in case we lose a sense of our own identity??

I'm just playing devil's advocate ... I too know the joy of being someone else for a few days. It's an incredible escape.

    3) One thing I'd like to mention is how woman used to masquerade as gentlemen back in the nineteenth century?? It just shows how cosplay does the same thing now - it liberates people from a role or duty. It's explorative and political.

    4) Alcon I suppose, but it was at JCC where me and some friends of mine dressed as lollita maids. I felt that made a really profound statement.

    5) I'd love to dress as Squall (FFVIII), or Nero (DMC4), or Sanzo (Saiyuki).

I'd like to see tutorials for doing nice cosplays on a budget. I mean, yeah, everyone and thier cousin has posted instructions for "easy cheap schoolgirl uniform" where you just buy stuff from a secondhand store and alter it, but what about those of us who have pretty good sewing skills and a fair amount of free time, but not much money for material? I'd also like to see more tutorials/advice for using everyday materials rather than stuff you have to get from a craft store and won't really use for anything but cosplay. After a while, I imagine, the extra resin and sculpture wire starts taking up considerable amounts of space.

To be honest, being someone who just started sewing for my cosplays, it's not entirely too bad price wise. As long as you stick to sales. For example, for an Alois Trancy jacket, the fabric for the jacket and liner would have cost me $50 >.< ouch. But I went on the boxing day sale and everything was 50% off, so $25 is pretty cheap. There are also usually discount cards for fabric stores. In Ontario we have FabricLand, and I have a 25% off everything in the store, it cost me $20 but it was worth it, it has paid itself off already with how much I've saved. Hope with helped, and I'm sorry it's so long >.<

    answers for question:

1&3 God bless the prop makers! Ive seen several people on youtube who strictly make props for cosplay. It takes a true artisan to create an entire costume and achieve a realistic representation of a character. I guess what im trying to say is to shine light on the skills needed to create quality and elaborate costumes instead of amateur style creations. Beginners have to realize that you have to do more than sew. Cosplay is becoming a "ultimate crafter's hobby" and you have to be skilled in many areas of costuming and crafting.

I've cosplayed about 4-5 years now, I find it as a fun way to enjoy my time, meet new people and feel more confident. I don't just cosplay at conventions, but sometimes at school or around town and other places. My first cosplay was L from Death Note, and while it is a very simple costume, its a great first one. In the small town I live in, sadly, most of the kids my age are usually druggies and pot heads that like to get drunk and messed up and "party". I have found that cosplay helps me keep away from that mess. I have met so many great people through this hobby and made some amazing lifelong friends as well!

And to answer question 2- I think , , , and are some excellent cosplayers to be interviewed!
