Cosplay: From Fandom To Indentity

Goddess with Black Wing

Welcome to a whole new level.

Cosplay is taking over the world and our only surprise is what took it so long. There is so much to explore in this current Cosplay crusade. Let’s take a look beyond the headlines and thriving Con event circuit and get to the heart of what makes Cosplay so special to so many around the Earth Sphere. This is your chance to share with us the important elements, storylines, issues, and community members you would like to see highlighted.

To get this party started we’re running a series of profiles and tutorials throughout October starting with Lillyxandra .

Now there is the ongoing process of the multiplying and diversifying of distinct cosplay communities into so many different ways of coming together, online and in–person, to express themselves (not just becoming characters from manga, anime, comic books, graphic novels, videogames, TV & movies, but also transforming themselves with renaissance, fetish, “furry”, gender–reversal and even entirely Virtual immersions). It seems to us that what had once been an expression of group fandom, and then morphed into a sort of mass “political” expression of a specific cultural sensibility—is now becoming something more for some: a true commitment to a set of pop cultural characters, in their world and according to their rules and ethos.

Cosplay is my way of showing my dedication to my favorite comic, film or game. When I cosplay, I say, “I love this character, and I want to bring it to life.” I've put literal blood, sweat, and tears into my costumes, and the final transformation has always been worth it.”

Halloween costume play has come a very long way.

It’s passed even beyond consumer culture fandom and now become an important part of who we are—our virtual identity. Who can even speculate on where things are ultimately going? At least, right now, rather than being circumscribed in your “identity” at all times by where you were born and to whom you were born… now it’s possible to don the costume of whomever you have chosen to be—the “identity” that is your free choice, not the one the world “gave” you without your permission. That just might be a really great thing, even if it is for just a week, or weekend, at a convention somewhere in the world, we can all go on a voyage of discovery to find out the person we truly are.

One of the greatest experiences in cosplaying is seeing the face of a complete stranger light up when they see you, because they are suddenly standing face to face with their favorite character. The passion fans have is simply inspiring. They shout your character’s name from across the convention hall as they brave the crowds to get close to you, or tap your shoulder while you check your phone, and wait eagerly but patiently while you are engaged in conversations to ask for a photo. Knowing that your little expression of fandom love has brightened the day of another human being justifies all the stress and money that goes into building a cosplay.”

Cosplay is a driving force in my life, it allows me to become other people or things for a short period of time, even if my style of cosplay isn't the technical norm. Creating the costume, the props, the makeup, it’s all like a sense of balance you need to attain to feel you've done something correctly. It's very zen.”

What is Cosplay to me… hmmm… I could say it’s about giving the actress in me a chance to shine, or that I just like to play dress up, but honestly it’s about connecting. Connecting with my imagination, connecting with the artist inside me, connecting with other people from all over the world and every walk of life. This is a community and when you walk around a Con or a Faire or a Masquerade, there is an immediate sense of connection that we are all sharing this experience. With an unspoken understanding, we all acknowledge each other as if we are all part of the same tribe, and there’s an immediate sense of belonging, acceptance and encouragement. It’s incredibly empowering.”

Someone I had the pleasure of meeting at Anime Expo, Los Angeles one year, and have since bumped into her and her cosplaying partner again a few other times, I think is a very professional cosplayer who has wonderful costumes and really gets into the characters she portrays. Her partner does insanely well, also, but I can't remember her DA name at the moment x.x

there sre cosplayers who are not that confident in portraying their favorite character when they go to the con that's why they choose photoshoots to exress their favorite characters but there are also some who dress up and organize photoshoots but you cannot see the characters in their poses and that what pains me..... i never cosplayed before but i know what cosplay is and i know the feeling of seeing the characters being cosplayed to life --- i want to see the characters that i see in the anime in the cosplayer ....there are also cosplayers who was once a cosplayer but as time goes by ( after they became famous ) they're just dressing up --- i don't see the cosplayers in them anymore --- it's so disappointing specially when that former cosplayer was one soooooo good in portraying a character --- for me a good cosplay gives me the chills and the goosebumps and the excitement of being starstruck of meeting the characters alive like i'm havin a fangasm

Started cosplaying only a few years ago, and only in the last year have I really noticed a change in the way it is being viewed. People seem more tolerant and open to the idea of "dressing up". It makes a difference when you have a good photographer and it feels good to be able to spend a weekend with people that provide great conversation, entertainment, and costume ideas. Though there are certainly friends of mine that don't quite comprehend the idea behind what I do (my parents included), I'm not embarrassed by it and love getting to hear what other people think of my costumes. Cosplay gives us all good reason to look however we want to without feeling judged by masses of fellow cosplayers for what we do. Society may be learning to accept cosplay more and more...but should it never fully come to understand it, I can only hope that a few people change their minds when they see me in having fun in fur~

1: More of the making of a costume; it takes a lot of work to put together a quality cosplay. Makeup and different fabrics, whether or not a good costume needs eye contacts, crossplay...

    I can't speak for 2-4, but I can answer 5 as well.

5: As a person who has absolutely no skill in creating costumes and working with different fabrics, I haven't actually done anything more than a joke cosplay. However, there's an assortment of video games as well as other media characters that I can only dream of cosplaying or would like to try to put together an outfit for. Examples include Rydia from FFIV, Rief/Crown and Ivan from Golden Sun, Chell from Portal 2, Stocking from P&SwG, Church, Washington, and 479er from Red vs. Blue, Sollux Captor and the Handmaid from Homestuck... There's many, many more. Cosplay is a way to show your appreciation and love for a character and there's just too many characters to love.

    1. I'd like to hear how people make their costumes especially low budget costumes that still find a way to look amazing. Specifically the people who make Gundum and armor costumes like Alphonse Elric. Oh, and weapons especially the big detailed ones like a keyblade or Demyx's sitar.
    2. I don't know that many people but my buddy just made real awesome pirate England cosplay she goes by Kyuubi-chan16.
3.Jewelry and how people make a heavy duty looking weapons look light as a feather or close to it.
    4. I've only ever been to Kumoricon. But I'm sure any con with 3,000 or more people is totally epic.
    5. I really wanna make an Alphonse Eliric cosplay or a Toothless or Charizard cosplay. No matter what though I'm bringing my free hugs sign, I got about a 110 last year. Those of you attending Kumoricon next year help me break the record, you'll know it's me because I'll be keeping a tally on my sign.

    3. Well, I suppose not just the workmanship that goes into the cosplay, but the love and comraderie that also go into it. Because, before I started going to cons and cosplaying, I was a really shy, insecure person. Being able to take on the personality of a more outgoing person, and getting so much attention and love from *being* that person, just made me feel so much better about myself.

I have never cosplayed before but I have been told soo many times that I should cosplay as Naruto Shippuden's Gaara.
I honestly am very shy and I dont know if I would acctually be able to cosplay without freaking out right before the pictures get taken. Something I consider essential when cosplaying is teaming up with some friends who can also cosplay with you, having fun while on it and getting to know more people like yourself. Now a question, should I really cosplay as Gaara for next Comicon, May 26th?

For me Cosplay is what happens when people do basic LARP, but not with roleplaying characters or middle age characters but with people from (mostly) popular fiction.

It broadens the view of ones identity by experiencing how it is to be someone else for some time. It shapes others expectations and our view of ourselves.

Maybe we will get to the point, where people can lead their daily lives as the character they want to be.

(I mostly come from pen-and-paper roleplaying, and cosplay is not that far away from that. Just the medium of expression differs)

For those new to the idea of 'cosplay', it feels new and fresh, and in some ways it is but for others it's been around for a very long time beyond the start of major conventions. Costuming and role play were just always centered around period based styles and historical events. I love the fact that over the years this genera of art has taken off to expand in so many directions. Its always exciting to see how the creators take materials out of their general purposes and bend them into new uses. And I hope to see it continue in the future as the younger generations are being introduced to it as not something odd to do, but fun.

As for #5 I'm really looking forward to finishing one of my own characters for cosplay. I've played so many other Anime and Science Fiction characters that I fan a lot, I feel it's time to put one of my own character to the test and see what people say.

    3. The making of the costumes themselves.

Cosplay is nothing new. Fans of Science-Fiction, Star Trek, and Fantasy have always been dressing up in costumes since the early days of conventions in the 70's. It is the term Cosplay that is new. I have been going to conventions since 1977 and fans have always adopted character's personalities with imitation costumes, role playing, and Halloween. So the term itself is the latest development in the field of 'fandom.' Also, the fans themselves since the introduction of Anime to America have developed foreign costumes other than American in our nation's get together's and conventions. That too is nothing new. All around the world fans have been dressing up as their favorite character's for years.

I think one of my favorite parts of cosplaying (aside from the pride of making a costume) is talking with the other cosplayers. Out of every slice of fandom, I've always found this group to be the most welcoming. I typically reserved when talking to strangers, but I've discovered other people in costume are usually very friendly! I'm constantly awed and appreciative over how free cosplayers are with costume making tips and tribulations. I've yet to meet someone in a really great costume try to keep any 'trade secrets'. Or, for that matter, be anything but fun to talk to -unless they've got to be somewhere half way across the con five minutes ago. To me, that's really the most important part. It fosters a feeling of support and encouragement.

I adore cosplay as it is a way to be who you truly are without being forced to fit in with societies dictates of costume and, of course, reality.
I think most do focus on Anime cosplay and there is a large contingent that are Steampunk but gendercrossing and fairytale even book cosplay is vastly underrated.
London Film and Comic Con and Memorabilia in London/Manchester and Birmingham are great for cosplay especially Doctor Who.

    1. I think it's important to note that, while bought costumes can be awesome and generally look very close to what you're supposed to be cosplaying, made costumes have an air of authenticity (if they're done well) that bought costumes don't quite seem to capture.

as a cosplayer i would have to say:
    1. I would love to see it highlighted how it is not limited to "anime"it is also, video games, comic books, movies, television series, fairy tales, novels.just about anything you can name, people cosplay it.[i feel as if people forget this]

2.I'll skip this one because i know too many people who are all excited and wonderful individuals who cosplay.

3.I feel that people who may not look perfect, but have the attitude and or persona of their character go greatly under-credited.It seems to be all about "perfect and pretty" when i feel that half the thing that makes a cosplay is the attitude, not just the appearance.

4.I see a lot of good cosplay at AnimeExpo,SakuraCon,DragonCon,Sandiego Comiccon,Fanime,NY comiccon, and many many horror cons have great horror themed cosplays, but there are too many to not text wall people.I also LOVE the cosplay/Costume as faires, dickens, renn faires, steampunk faires and cons, victorian faires, medevil faires.Love em all.

5.I dress and act as many, however if i had to choose one i have a lot of fun being it would have to be "ivan isaacs from the priest comic,or Nuada Silverlance from Hellboy 2:The golden army.I do think everyone should try it at least once, its a great way to act unscripted yet know your character,to play in prosthetics, costumes, make up wigs. You can either go all out,or just hop in for fun!

I have always felt the first step to a decent cosplay is to be honest with yourself.
when you are picking, you have to be honest if you have a body type to cosplay a character. not everyone is built like an anime girl. personally, i will never cosplay gurren laggan's yoko, because i know i am much to short for the build. this is not to say that sometimes you cant make it work. faking a bigger bust, getting rid of existing bust, higher heels to be taller, corsets to suck in a little extra around the middle. there are ways around things.
the other thing is picking a cosplay you can honestly say is in your skill range. too often you see people who made a cosplay and they picked something they weren't quite able to do, and some important part messed up, causing the whole outfit to not be quite right in some way that messes with the integrity. such as, cloud strifes with non-spiked hair, ed elric or vriska with missing or bizarre mech-limbs and such.
