Suggestivism
Birth of a New Category or Beginning of the End of Categories?
by techgnotic
Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be another “ism” on the art world horizon, what with the growing accessibility of all
art technique and technology rendering all the “schools of art” equally available and doable and therefore making impossible the dominance
or even existence of any current art “movement” … comes “suggestivism,” the “ism” best summing up what art is in our lives today, defined
more by what it is not, rather than what it is.
"Suggestivist" art is not slave to any one particular type of current art, from pencils to oils to photo-manipulation. It’s not about technology or technique.
It’s largely apolitical and need not promote any particular “message.” Whether defined by Sadakichi Hartmann (circa. 1900; the first to coin
the term) as simply being a reaction to overly cerebral and insufficiently poetic art in all its forms, from canvases to literature, or by Nathan
Spoor, a current artist and advocate, as a “process” by which the artist lets go of constrictive didactic narratives and dogmatic theories and lets
the will of his or her muse take over so that truly poetic art can be created, whether that art “makes sense” or not. The artist allows the soul of
his deepest artistic intuitions “suggest” what to create, without all the over-thinking. The artist can ponder the “meaning” of the vision produced
later, along with everyone else. The one thing that “suggestivist” artworks have in common is that the viewer is encouraged (compelled!) to imagine
his or her own interpretation of the piece. These artworks generally always have recognizable elements, but the real world ends there, as these
elements are usually then twisted into the impossible conjunctures of mad dream logic. Suggestivist art can sometimes suggest the frightening and
haunting, but usually the emphasis is on the playful and wildly unapologetically creative.
“Suggestivism” is as apolitical as our largely apolitical times, though usually informed with ambiguous political memes and imagery. It is an art
for our times that does not ask to be analyzed and understood, but presents itself as a cipher or puzzle with no correct answer that commands attention
none the less. Or it could be just the latest petulant reaction to a public perception of arts experts talking over our heads in their own secret language about what we should and should not like.
Time will tell.
Perhaps the greatest thing about “suggestivist” art is the very fact that it is so... “suggestive.” It’s the ultimate resource for artists (pop & fine),
musicians, writers, dancers or just dedicated daydreamers who feel a bit blocked. Re-charging the creative batteries only requires you spend a little time
creating your own stories to fit the magical creations and constructions of these works, and one’s own inner engines of fantasy and whimsy will soon be
sweetly humming again.

You wouldn't be insulting their talent, you would just be questioning their choice to do such disturbing things in their art. I for one question it immensely and to be honest I think it's probably a waste of their talents.

Well as long as they like it, it doesn't really matter what we think, no matter how much we think think they need psychiatric help. After all art is defined by the individual, but honestly yikes

I think that it's a great idea to use this type of art for political messages etc. But just other random stuff works fine as well
Love it!

1. What the artist wants, there's enough room for anything.
2. Not particularly. I think there are many movements with different ideals.
3. Like or dislike, if I see the message straight away, I do, If I don't, I don't bother finding it.
4. I try to hide the message well enough only a select amount of individuals notice. But overall - I'm all about the aesthetic side of art. In art you create your own world, It should be appealing enough to invite me to explore deeper. :3

do we need to make Art any more confusing
than it has been for centuries with an "ism" added...?
Art is just that... Art... all an Artist doesn't need is more
constraint for making Art... too much dissecting already...
lets call Art... just that, Art...! leave the politics to the
museums and galleries for dissection of aesthetics...
they are the factors that pick clean the bone structure
of Art...

Agreed! To be honest I feel it is a "chasing after the wind" that we try to define it at all.

Q Should art be political or apolitical? Or do you think there’s room enough for both?
A Sometimes there's a need for political art, so artists should fill that need, ACCORDING TO HOW THEY ARE MOVED TO DO SO, although it is ideal if any political art piece should have enough aesthetic to be germaine to all subsequent ages. Otherwise, I think art should either not be political, or be just slightly tinged with the political.
Q: Do you sense there being any current “movement” in the arts world today?
A: I think so, and I now think "Suggestivism" is "in the ether". So is Steampunk.
Q: Is this a good or bad state of things?
A: Isms are good. So is uncategorizeable art. Let's have both!
Q: Do you try to “figure out” an artist’s intent or message when looking at art, or do you simply decide whether you like or dislike each piece of art?
A: Hey, I almost always do both!
Q: In your own art, do you try to transmit any sort of message, or do you concern yourself only with technique and aesthetics?
A: Oh, how hard I try to improve my technique! I try to make it better with each piece. Aesthetic content: It either appears in my art or not. What I have learned over the years influences my work, willy-nilly. Message? Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. There's room in my oeuvre for everything from no message to lots of message. I'm more likely to rule something in than rule it out. My tastes in art are "catholic", that is, "universal". I like everything but Rococco, the extremely offensive, the hard-core porn, child/animal cruelty, and the art that is too much like some other piece of art.

1.- both
2.- I think there is always "movements" in art. Depend of the movement if there is a good or bad state of things.
3.- Sometimes the art (will sound weird) speak. I mean, when you see something that doesn't have a specific meaning to the artist then you dont notice anything. Instead when the artist put a message inside it, is when everyone get a message, no matter if it is the same the artist thought or not.
4.- Sometimes I try my best to transmite a message, but other times I just do it for fun.

Again closed questions to divide the readers into defending arbitrary and subjective matters, instead of asking the real questions, the hard ones, what does suggestivism implies? What paradoxes does it bring about? What new concepts and theories can we bring about from it about art?

I will not be mocked, this is serious, one should ask the right questions in life, in order to understand dilemmas and problems and perhaps resolve them.
This is philosophy, not some inner journey or some ultimate answer to everything, but to grasp the idea that when we are philosophers, we discuss the implications of a concept or an idea and how problematic it is, I suggest you should look up S. Zizek on that matter, because he wonderfully explains it in two vids on youtube: [link] and [link]

I believe that Art IS and will always BE free from all rules that might be set for it !
Art should be anything it could be , rather a message or just a view of colors , rather an Idea or an endless void of darkness , an echo of emotions in the human soul , a form of Intelligence !
there is no end to what Art can be , no power in the world that can hold it , a sign of liberty within the humanity !

1. Of course there is room for both. Art takes many forms. Be it medium, technique, meaning ect. Just to even think that you can't do something with your form of art is to say you are not a true artist. As far as suggestivism, it seems to already take the apolitical route.
2. I don't think I'm qualified to answer.
3. That's a tough one. When I look at someone's work and it is fill with creative ambiguity I tend to draw blanks on what it means. Even if it is filled with aesthetically pleasing images, I normally don't "get it". Now if I see a great "looking" piece, yet has no noticeable inspiration behind it, I tend to just glance and forget.
4. I would like to say I do, yet, I don't think my skills are up to par with what I would normally deep down like to draw.

I think every piece of art has a motive... even if it's just to express the ordinary or the extraordinary. I like knowing the context and the reason behind them, its why I got a degree in humanities. You don't need to have an explanation in order to appreciate a piece but I find that it deepens your appreciation if you have some understanding of its origin. From their its fun to see your own take on it; for example, its amazing how older pieces can fit seamlessly in modern contexts even though the artists intent was completely unrelated.
There aren't any muses out their who move you to create - its the thoughts in your heads, your observations, your values, your life experiences that motivate you to express yourself.
