*Note: I'm entering this piece of art in =Flynn-the-cat 's Flight contest, because phoenixes fly higher and more beautifully than anything else....and they always manage to surprise you

So the original phoenix I did was a quarter of the size of this one and it was for a school assignment. My teacher loved it so much that I made him this large version of it, because for him the phoenix is symbolic of the art of teaching and his life. He was floored when he saw this, and once again I realized how much more enjoyment I get out of art when I'm creating it for someone else. It's so gratifying and amazing to see their faces, and to know how much time and effort you put in to something being appreciated in a way that only they can appreciate it. Anywho, my teacher got it specially matted and framed, and he sent a picture of it hanging on his wall at home, and that's what I took this from. The lighter part is because there was a ray of sunlight on it from his window. I feel like this version is way better and more detailed than the smaller one, and I put hours and hours and hours of work into it. So far, it's the largest copic drawing I've ever done, at 17" in diameter.

This past year of school I was required to take a class called "Theory of Knowledge", also known as epistemology. There were various journal prompts throughout the year, dealing with some of the questions or encouraging us to come up with our own in response to the philosophical nature of the class....one of the prompts was to describe our own personal "theory of knowledge" and to illustrate it. This was what I turned in...It's a rising phoenix contained by a circle of water. This represents how I deal with life...there are extreme ups and there are downs, and yet always a new beginning, like the phoenix, rising from its ashes more beautiful than ever.
