The subtle matrix of light and metal comprising the Great Machine's signal detection interface began to hum and resound with strange intonations. Coalescing into an entirely alien harmony - grace without observable pattern, beauty without limitation of structure - the Hekensian researchers stood in mystified silence. Tyric had the wherewithal to snap out of it and whizz about the control panels, madly waving his hands over light portals to record the event in various formats.

Later, after many, many rounds of algae coffee, Verisophenes had the brilliant and risky idea of running the recording through that weird quantum data filter just released from HQ that everyone talked about but no one wanted to use due the reportedly immense wavelength requirements. But in a moment of inspired insomnia known well to researchers, he unraveled a short, unmistakable string of data: six long numbers, each separated by a short repeating sequence of easily recognizable prime numbers. Six, thought Veris. Six...wait. Six coordinates for a location in three dimensions!

Soon, in the middle of the night, the entire crew was alert and awake and had crowded into the Observatory to excitedly examine the region indicated by the coordinates - a densely packed star cluster on the edge of known space - for the possibility of intelligent brethren amidst the heretofore vast emptiness of space.
