Description
Happy Harbor, Rhode Island. Ruins of Mt. Justice. 11:15 P.M.On the sandy beach just in front of the collapsed remains of Mt. Justice the young hero team known as the Titans were assembled. The three it stood out for most were Nightwing, once the boy wonder Robin, the Flash, third to take the name after the death of his uncle and mentor and once known as Kid Flash, and Changeling, once known as the young hero and member of the Doom Patrol Beast Boy. For them this was a return to an old home with a lot of memories, the good going hand-in-hand with the bad. Given the reason for their return however it was not so much a reunion as much as a dire call to action.
Along with the aforementioned three were the current Titans members Princess “Starfire” Koriand’r, the leader of the group, the Wonder Twins Zan and Jayna, Jamie Reyes the third and youngest hero to take the title of Blue Beetle, and Kon-El/Conner Kent the clone of his late Kryptonian contributor and taking the name Superboy. All were waiting with a growing impatience on the shores.
“They’re late.” Superboy finally stated out of the silence. “They might not have made it.”
“Don’t say that.” Changeling was quick to retort. “They’ll be here.”
“Lot of confidence just based on hope.” Superboy bluntly pointed out.
“If you’re not going to help you can take a hike, Conner!” Changeling spat, making Superboy tense for a moment. Thankfully Starfire stepped in, both backing down with Changeling saying “Sorry. I’m just nervous.”
“We all are, Garfield. Don’t worry. Kaldur’ahm will be here.” She assured him.
Superboy then bluntly retorted “And if he doesn’t at least I can say I had fun at the beach.”
When he turned and walked off Superboy pushed past both Blue Beetle and Zan. Jamie Reyes had called him a “pendejo” under his breath while Zan gave the equivalent in his own alien language. Only thanks to Jayna were the two calmed.
After that little incident Starfire sighed, prompting Nightwing to say to her “Hey, look on the bright side. At least he didn’t hit any of them.”
“He hasn’t been the same since Superman’s death.” She replied. “I don’t know how you did it, Dick. Between bringing Jamie on to the team, the Twins, and now this business with Raven. It’s effected everyone. I haven’t heard anything from Cassie since she left, and now even Mia won’t respond to me.”
“They could just be trying to cool down while all of this blows over.” He assured her. “But don’t think I had it any easier back in the day. At least you’re doing this on your own. I had Batman and the rest of the League breathing down my neck almost every time we tried to walk out that door.” He pointed to the rubble of Mt. Justice as a general indicator. “Then again I think we flew out half the time.”
With that she added “If the League finds out what we’re doing they’ll be doing more than just breathing down our necks as punishment.”
Before Nightwing could point out how what he’d said was an expression their attention was draw when Jayna pointed in the distance out towards the ocean. Everyone looked and saw something flying towards them, the shape becoming clearer as it came closer. It was the New Genesis Super-Cycle, given to the Titans over a year ago by the New God Mister Miracle. Piloting it was Kaldur’ahm, also known as Aqualad companied by their other team member and friend Rave, the half-demon sorceress, and Princess Amethyst of the Gemworld, current member of the Shadowpact (sometimes known as the Justice League Dark).
After landing everyone was happy to see them, Changeling quick to help Raven out first while asking “Hey! Are you alright?”
“I am. For now…” she replied. “Thank you, Garfield.”
Aqualad was also quick to explain “Had some trouble finding where the House of Mystery manifested. Even thanks to Amethyst here on providing a location it was only a general area. Thankfully we made it before it moved again.”
Nightwing nodded before asking the princess of Gemworld “Do you have it then?”
She nodded and held up the thing the group most needed, saying “Mr. Constantine won’t like that I stole the Eternity Book out from under his nose but given the circumstances hopefully he’ll forgive me.”
“Not like the guy doesn’t have plenty of other books.” The Flash commented. He took it and, flipping through the pages within the blink of an eye, came to a page and pointed “Is this it?”
Raven was the one to answer “Yes. It’s one of the few spells recorded from Azeroth. It’ll help to… Uagghh!”
Before she could finish Raven dropped to her knees in pain. Everyone watched with shock as red markings began to appear on her skin. They’d seen them before and the last time was not in the best of circumstances either. When she lifted her head to look at them her eyes had grown a shining red to match.
Seeing this Zan commented “See? This is why I hate magic. It’s too freaky!”
“We need to hurry.” Raven struggled to say.
Garfield helped her to her feet and added “Don’t worry, Rae. We’ll get you back to your pretty, pale self in no time.”
As the others were about to leave Nightwing said “We can take her to one of my safe houses in Blüdhaven.” He then asked Amethyst “How long with this ritual or whatever it is take?”
“I’m not too sure.” She replied. “The magic of your world is different from that in mine but if I can work it right is should be enough. Hopefully as long as nothing goes-”
Before she finished something began to manifest in the Titan’s path, Superboy saying “You had to say it, huh?”
A few feet away from the team the House of Mystery began to appear. It began to manifest from nowhere, hovered a few feet from the ground for a moment and began settling on the sand and rocky surface below. When it finished it sat as if it had been built their all along. The Titans backed up only a few steps when the front door opened and the occupants exited one-by-one.
The members of the Shadowpact appeared from the House of Mystery one after the other. They were the hall blazing sorcerer and would-be leader of the team John Constantine, the knight turned immortal Jason Blood, the manifestation of the Lord or Order Nabu Doctor Fate, the silent and mysterious human-plant hybrid Black Orchid, and forming from the sand in what started as a mass of tangled vines and plants before forming into a shape was the Earth’s avatar of the power of “the Green” Swamp Thing. The team itself was accompanied by the familiar but disheartening faces of Cassie Sandsmark, the second Wonder Girl, and Mia Dearden, the latest apprentice to Green Arrow and second to be called ‘Speedy’.
As all members were assembled outside the House of Mystery Constantine looked at the Titans and said “Now, now, kids. Didn’t your mums ever tell you not to mess with demonic spells?”
Looking to her friends standing with the Shadowpact Starfire said “Mia? Cassie? You brought them here, didn’t you? How could you?”
Wonder Girl retorted with “I didn’t want to do this, Kori. But you wouldn’t listen! All the pretenses have been saying this is wrong. Xanadu. Even the Oracle on Themyscira has foreseen an impending doom and Raven’s at the center of it.”
Doctor Fate added to this with “The Lords of Order have spoken. The child’s fate is sealed.”
“Is that so, Mist?” Aqualad asked. “Is that really you speaking or the helmet? Which one’s in control right now?”
Despite this Starfire looked and asked “And you, Mia? You’d really side with them over your friends?”
“Actually the little Robin-Hood girl was spying on us. I just had to borrow her body until this whole thing blew over.” She responded in her not-so usual way.
Hearing her Blue Beetle asked “Did I miss something or was Mia always from New York?”
“It’s not her.” Nightwing recognized before pointing “You’re really stooping this low to stealing a girl’s body, Boston?”
“Hey, don’t make it sound like that, kid.” Mia replied, everyone now understanding she was possessed by the ghostly hero Deadman. “We’re just trying to keep you kids from doing something we’ll all wind up regretting.”
Looking past the Titans Constantine gestured “Amethyst. Be a good girl now and give me back the Eternity Book. There’s a lot of nasty in those pages you shouldn’t be messing with.”
“Better with me than with you, Mr. Constantine!” she retorted. “Especially after what I heard you and the rest of the Shadowpact were planning to do. That’s why I’m helping the Titans.”
Hearing that the Flash asked “What do you mean what they were ‘planning’ to do?”
To answer Sebastian Blood explained “It’s the very reason why I’ve fought against my brother and the Church of Blood all these years. They knew that for Trigon to claim this world he needed his key. His daughter you children seek to protect. But without the key then he cannot pass from his realm to this one and claim the Earth for his own. So therefore the key must be destroyed.”
“Destroyed?” Starfire said aghast. “You mean kill her?”
In response Changeling stepped in front of the group, taking the form of a ferocious tiger while saying “Any of you freaks touch her and I’ll rip you into so many shreds they’ll never put you back together!”
In response Swamp Thing readied to fight while threatening “Do not seek to challenge us, child! We’ve faced threats and forces beyond your understanding several times!” Pointing to Raven he further said “That child is a threat to this world and the Green! She must be destroyed!”
“No! There’s another way! A chance for her to live!” Amethyst insisted. “It’s here, in the Eternity Book! If you’ll just let us try-”
“And if you’re wrong, what then?” Wonder Girl cut her off. “The whole world’s at risk. We can’t leave anything to chance! I love Raven. She’s my friend, and I don’t want anything bad to ever happen to her. But this has to end one way or another for everyone’s sake!”
Seeing her conviction Nightwing looked and said “Is this really how it’s going to be, Constantine? What would Zatanna say about this?”
“She’s not here to say anything, Richard.” He replied. “Now you and your playmates stand down or we’ll have to put you all in time out.”
Superboy now stepped up and, after cracking his knuckles, challenged “Like to see you try! You think we’re scared of you magic jerks?”
“It’s not them you should fear, Conner Kent.” a sudden eerie voice had said, sending chills down near everyone’s spine. Near the Shadowpact the ghostly figure of the Specter took shape, from the pale white skin to the dark, ominous cape and glowing green eyes. Now fully formed he continued “The daughter of Trigon is a threat to all. She must face punishment. If not for this world then the countless souls slain by her father’s actions. The seek retribution. And as the spirit of vengeance the Specter shall see it done!”
As the Titans looked more worried now at the thought of what the Specter could do to them Jayna nervously asked Starfire “What do we do?” Her silence prompted her to turn and ask “Nightwing?”
“You know, for once, I’m actually not too sure.” He simply replied.
As Raven groaned again, everyone seeing the markings on her body glow more violent Jason Blood insisted “It’s almost too late! We have to end this now!”
Despite the presence of the Specter now Changeling insisted “No! Raven’s a person and she deserves a chance! If any of you try anything you’ll have to go through me!”
Seeing this act of bravery rally the others back behind their cause to protect Raven the Specter now threatened “This is your final warning, Titans. Stand aside or perish along with your friend!
Before he could make any move against the young heroes another malevolent voice cried out “NO! YOU SHALL NOT HARM ANY OF THEM!” All turned now to see as nearby the Phantom Stranger appeared, seemingly from nowhere, and approached the teams while saying “The Titans are right. Raven may be the daughter or Trigon but she is worthy of life. A life not you nor any others shall take, Specter!”
Surprised the Flash said aloud “The Phantom Stranger’s on our side? Things just got a whole lot better for us!”
He looked at him and replied “You are too quick to assume, Wally West.” Blue Beetle asking if that was a joke made by the Stranger. “While I do not wish to see Raven destroyed she is too dangerous to be left in your hands. She must be kept protected and away from where she can cause any true harm.”
Realizing what he meant Changeling said “You mean locking her up in a cell? Or some magic prison? No way!”
“Your emotions are taking control of your judgment, Garfield Logan.” The Stranger retorted.
“That or his hormones are kicking in again.” Constantine joked.
“You and your team will stand down as well, Constantine!” the Stranger pointed. “I will not allow your actions to endanger one who’s helped save the world several times. And alongside the Shadowpact at that!”
The Specter responded with “Small acts of heroism cannot account for the countless atrocities caused by Trigon. You are a fool to stand against me, Phantom Stranger. If you continue to do so you will face vengeance!”
Constantine added with “Not usually one to agree with the big, green phantom here but he’s right. You can’t take us all on your own, Stranger.”
The Phantom Stranger only replied “Who said I came here alone?”
From behind the Phantom Stranger a small Boom Tube appeared. From it came members of the Justice League itself. The team present consisted of Cyborg, who had created the Boom Tube to bring them all here, Batman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Zatanna, the Green Lantern John Stewart, the second incarnation of Firstorm, made from the combined matrixes of Jason Rusch and Professor Martin Stein, and the elastic Plastic Man.
As they all came onto the scene Plastic Man joked “You guys all trying to throw some super-team showdown without us? Not cool!”
Seeing the third team now assembled Speedy/Deadman said “Okay, anymore people start showing up and we’ll need to order pizza or something. Hope someone’s got 400 bucks to spare. Eh, Batsy?”
After spotting Zatanna in the group Constantine said “So this is what you were doing when you’re out and about, eh, love? Paling around with the big leaguers behind my back, eh?”
“Don’t start with me, John!” she retorted. “Not after the lengths you were trying to go to today! How could you honestly think to kill her? Raven’s just a child!”
“So was I.” he began. “So was you. And Basty, Wondy, Jason, all of us were kids. Look how we turned out. Heroes. Goddamn world savers. But that was a choice we made.” Pointing to Raven he continued “She doesn’t have a choice! She can’t help herself. Even now her father’s working his way through her to get to us. We can’t let that happen!”
“And we won’t.” Wonder Woman said. “But not like this. Not by taking the life of an innocent. A friend!”
“Yet you’re complacent to lock her away?” Aqualad retorted. He looked to Cyborg and added “You’ll imprison one of your own friends, Victor?”
“Better locked up then put down.” Cyborg retorted. “If I’d have known the Titans would be in this big of a mess after I left maybe I’d have stuck around more.”
Added to this John Stewart looked to the Flash and said “You’re making a big mistake, Wally. Your place is with the Justice League now. Remember?”
“No.” he shook his head. “I’m right where I need to be. Between you and my friend.”
“We’re all friends here, Wally.” Supergirl tried to say. “We don’t want this to get out of hand any more than it already has.”
Superboy annoyingly replied to her “Says the girl who can’t even lead the Justice League right. What would Superman think of all of this, huh?”
That statement clearly angered her but she tried to calm while saying “I don’t know. But he’s not here. I am! And I’m warning you to stand down. All of you!” she now addressed both the Titans and Shadowpact.
“Sorry, Kara.” Starfire insisted. “Not this time.”
“Don’t let your pride get the better of you, princess.” Batman stated. “You’re only making this worse.”
“You’re not in charge this time, Bruce!” Nightwing now insisted. “And I’m not letting you or anyone else push my friends around. Not while we still have a chance. So here’s my warning: leave or we’ll make all of you leave.”
With that everyone from the Titans to the Shadowpact to the Justice League all tensed and readied themselves for the fight that was clearly about to break out, Plastic Man even saying “Oh boy. This is going to get messy!”
As everything began to tense Constantine called “Might need the extra muscle for this one, Jason.”
Blood nodded before chanting “Gone, gone, the form of man. Now rise the demon-” A moment his body was engulfed in hellfire before subsiding, Jason Blood gone and now standing the form of “ETRIGAN!” Now summoned Etrigan rhymed “Friend turned foe in this dire hour, all to quell Trigon’s power. ‘Tis a battle like none other, but in the end shall brother kill brother?”
“Took the words right out of my mouth, Sparky.” Speedy/Deadman commented while drawing an arrow.
As the teams readied Wonder Woman looked and said “Cassie, please. Don’t do this. Donna wouldn’t have wanted this.”
Regretfully she replied “I know. But I’ve come too far now. I’m sorry, Diana.”
“So am I…” was her only response.
Starfire, with her hands and eyes glowing in preparation for battle, said “It’s your call this time, Dick. What will it be?”
Nightwing took a moment to consider the situation: three super powered teams all about to fight for the sake of his friend Raven. The experienced and versatile Justice League on one side, the magically enhanced and skilled Shadowpact, and he with the young and still newly groomed Titans behind him. Not to mention the Specter and the Phantom Stranger, both poised to fight each other once the battle broke out. It was needless to say Nightwing had not often found himself in so dire a situation as this. But even now only one thing was on his mind: keeping his friend safe.
“Amethyst.” He called back to her. “Get started. We’ll hold them off.” She nodded and moved herself and Raven away from the fight while Nightwing declared “TITANS GO!”
With that final declaration all three teams charged….
**********
Not too far from where the battle took place Klarion the Witch boy watched with devious delight at the spectacle before him. He sat on a rock with his cat familiar, Teekl, in his lap and a small bag of popcorn sitting nearby. As he pet his familiar and munched piece-by-piece he giggled with delight at what was transpiring.
Teekl meowed something to which Klarion said “I know, right? Some of my best work. Silly humans. Especially the younger ones. Their emotions are always so easy to manipulate.”
From nearby Brother Sebastian Blood, head of the cult of Trigon dubbed the ‘Church of Blood’, said “You’ve done well, Klarion. You certainly know how to ‘bring the chaos’, as you out it.” As he took time to watch the war erupt among the teams he added with a growing confidence “This is all we need. Soon Trigon will be unleashed upon this world to bestow his malevolence! And then his daughter shall be mine!”
