Well, there's a few things to consider if you want to get into 3d art:
-Daz3d Advanced (basic is Ok to start with, but you really need the advanced shader ability)
-Elite Human Surface Shader (for Daz3d), and learn to customize human textures
-Some people prefer Poser instead of Daz3d
-Gimp or Photoshop, for creating custom textures for clothing & items
The 3d art programs help compensate for technical skills like drawing ability, but it's like any other medium. It takes a good bit of time in learning the ins and outs, and you get better as you learn. In essence, you're learning how to use a computer program instead of learning to move a pencil or brush.

I have try to use DAZ before, but I think I'm more familiar with 3Ds Max
