I find it especially creepy that she gets set off just from you trying to open a door, minding your own business.

Just don't forget to open the No-Ghost, and all will be well.

More specifically, she would appear in that corridor if you tried to open any of the doors - you can still go up the stairs or leave the way you came.
Once she appears, you can't go anywhere until you deal with her, and the only things you can do with her that won't kill you are speaking with her, opening the No-Ghost, and throwing the OPENED No-Ghost at her.

To be clear, it wasn't the face that scared me, it was the music, and the description of how you died! The music basically screamed "OH SHIT! YOU JUST DID SOMETHING WRONG!!!"

The whole entire combination of everything did it. It was a Team effort on all parts. Hahaha

I remember the first time I saw that face in that game. Scared the daylights out of me and the description that went along with it. Nice work on the face and boxes.

Wow, woodburning? You don't see a lot of that on here. Nicely done, the medium gives way to how batshit scary this ghoulish baddie was. Nicely done.
Actually, you can talk to the skull woman, and you can examine the skull woman, but anything else will kill you... yet it's odd that you can just walk in front of her and up the stairs.

Haha, very true!
I was also thinking of doing one with the ghost Butler as well. I think this moment, and the one with the butler were probably the freakiest moments in that game. Well I guess you could also throw the Zombies in there too, mainly because of how well done the art was for them.

Zombies on the Amiga version are the absolute worst.
They have eyeballs hanging out of their sockets, and to top it all off the description is a little gorier, and they play a moaning sound effect when it happens. >_<

I never did get a chance to run through the Amiga one. I played a little of the Apple 2 version though. I remember you have to do something a little different when using the No Ghost on the Skeleton woman, cause when I did the regular "Open No Ghost - Use No Ghost on woman", I still died...it was weird, but whatev'!

Hrmmm... maybe the action for "turn the bottle upside down so the contents spill out, dummy" is missing somwhere between the OPEN and USE stage. XD

Ever hear of a game called 'Sweet Home' for the Famicom?
Never released in the states. If you ever saw it, you'd see why. There are translated ROMs floating about, though. Now THAT game was creepy!
But back to this actual work, I am quite impressed, and intrigued. Seeing classic NES applied to Woodburning (That's what it is, right?) is just one of those unique things. Even better if it's done well! Kind of like hearing the SMB theme on glass bottles, or giant models of Pac-Man.
So, overall, excellent work.

That was one of the best parts of that game. Definitely the most memorable.
Thanks! I'm workin' on a Deja Vu one next. I'm just trying to think of the part of the game I want.

It always freaked me out... even now.
Great job at reproducing that game's creepiness!

What exactly triggered your death in the corridor with the skeleton lady?
IIRC, she appears and if you try to open a door or go up the stairs, she kills you... is that it?

Tedbob In reply to Tigerfog [2008-09-19 18:02:54 +0000 UTC]
oh no, you can still leave (not sure about Opening, but I know you can still go up the stairs and such). With the exception of speech, if you try anything with "her" you die.
And also...make sure you OPEN that can of No-Ghost before you use it.

I feel like playing this game over again.
So using a No-Ghost with its cover closed counts as an action that kills you? Ouch...
Nowadays, it's hard to believe that there was a time when 8-bit graphics and point and click gameplay was enough to scare us off...

There's still quite a few out there. I'm guessing if you've played Uninvited, you surely must have played ShadowGate.
A really good gem I came across over the winter was a Japanese Novel/Narrative game for Super Nintendo called "Otogirisou". As expected, it's pretty much all reading with a background image, but some of the sounds they have at specific points are quite eerie at times.
Best part about it was I only know a very small bit of Japanese, so I could only catch specific words or actions, so me and my friends would just kinda provide our own commentary. Definitely a game to play with a bunch of drunken yahooligans. Haha!

Eeesh, I remember that scene too. Much scarier than the Grim Reaper from Shadowgate. You've done an excellent job, here. I'm envious of people who can create artwork in wood like this.

Apparently we're not the only ones, from reading forums around the Internet. Seeing the creepy skeletons and ghosts in these games was almost a rite of passage! There's still one game on the old Commodore 64 that I can't remember the name of that had a similar death scene. It was some sort of maze game and I've spent the last twenty years trying to remember.
