Description
Huge file.I said I wasn't going to do tutorials, but people had so many questions that a bit ago I came up with my Clay FAQ . Since the semester ended I've had more questions and have seen more people applying their skills learned from my information, other artists' information, as well as their own experiements in making clay charms and figurines. One thing that stuck out to me was making fortune cookie charms strikingly similar to my own. Imitation is quite flattering, but none of them were doing it properly.
Seeing how I had actual time now to do such a thing, I figured a proper tutorial was in order.
Enjoy.
Spread the word that this is here. ^_^
I'll take suggestions for other tutorials, as I rather enjoyed doing this one.
Please ignore that I misspelled "Michael's" and "Squirrel".

I think it's really great and nice of you put this tutorial up when some may have become annoyed at the fact people were making the same thing as them.
Thanks so much, and the tutorial looks great (with the cute little pictures and all - looks like something you'd see in a clay book. )
Seeing your stuff has really inspired me to start experimenting with clay. I might just try this tutorial later. ^^

I'm glad it's helpfu.
It was and is really annoying when I see others doing what I do or copying, but what does it really matter? I figure why not just have fun. ^_^

This is a wonderful tutorial! I can't find Sculpey glaze in my local craft store (small town, hehe), but I found just a regular super shiny glaze that you can paint on just about anything, and I've found it works well, also. I'm gonna fave this and try my hand at some yummy fortune cookies!

So glad there's a good alternative. I never know what's available for others, but if others have the same problem I hope they read your comment and can find other glazes too. ^_^
Have fun!

My local craft store doesn't really stock much, I guess because not many people really shop for unique craft things. Most of the people who buy things there buy yarn and stuff for embroidery. Luckily they are always well stocked in Sculpey III. The bad thing is, I just got word that the store is closing!

Ooh, ooh! I have a question! Not about the tutorial, but about woring with polmer clay in general. Despite my best efforts, I always end up getting dust and fibers of stuff stuck in the clay. How can I avoid this? I do everything I can think of: wash my hands, try to keep my workspace clean, work on wax paper, keep the clay in plastic baggies when not in use... It especially makes the white clay look bad. Your white clay in this tutorial looks spotless, how do you do it?

I often have this problem too. There's two ways of solving it:
1) wear latex gloves
or
2) buff it out with a sanding block.
When I use the plain Sculpey I do this all the time before painting so there aren't any bit of dust or cat fur (it gets everywhere!).
When it comes to coloured clays, I try my best to keep it nice and clean. Dust off my work space, use fresh wax paper, make sure my hands are clean, and I place finished items (before baking) in a flat cardboard box (it's anout 2" deep..so mostly flat) lined with fresh wax paper. Sometimes it works well, other times I still manage to get dust/fur in things and I have to pick it out before baking.

Thank you very much! Its good to know Im not the only one this happens to. For some reason I was worried that I was.
I get dog hair in my clay.

Maybe so, but I do love my dog very much.
Also, Im now making a bunch of mini clay foods, mostly donuts, and by using latex gloves Ive eliminated a lot of my dust problem, so thank you!
