Because she IS a villain, that's why. She NEVER was a Titan (during the time she was officially with the team, she was Slade's spy) and was MEANT to betray (as per Judas Contract, the comic storyline the series' second seeason was based on), die (or turn to stone, because of the show being tailored for children), and be revived without recollection of her past (as per the finale, based on the Terra II comic storyline).

But if you really want to be an argument necromancer, I'm just gonna say that Terra was clearly intended to be and played as an ultimately good, decent character in the animated series, Judas Contract be damned.

Or not. She was always meant to be an insecure character. That's why--even despite the self-sacrifice in the second season--she ran once again from her past and her problems upon her revival in the series finale.

Word of God says Terra was designed to prove that not everyone with powers was cut out to be a hero or a villain. Thus placing her as either violates her concept.


But that's not the point. The point is, you responded to a post that was clearly labeled as being *three years old*. Is arguing about comic book continuity REALLY that big a deal to you?

"Thus placing her as either violates her concept." Then the Terra II storyline that the series finale is based on defies that concept, because in the comics, she comes back as a good person. XD

Three years ago or three mintues ago, it doesn't matter, because one should think about what they type before they type it. That said, it was obvious that the reason she was put in the villains category was because her lasting impact as a character came during her time as Slade's apprentice.

To elaborate, as a friend of mine put things:

It really irks me that a lot of fans didn't get the last episode, they kept going on about "The girl wasn't Terra" "Terra lost her memory and her powers," etc.

First off, it is very safe to assume the schoolgirl was Terra. Terra was gone from the statue, obviously she was revived. How? Well that isn't entirely important to the story. Why was she a school girl? Well, my thoughts on this was that Terra from the start, as a character, in some ways was always trying to fake a normal life. On the surface, she was an innocent, hip, fun to be around average teenage girl. I'm guessing that after her revival, she'd try very hard to assume a normal-teenage role.
Of course, there could be a much more involved plot behind this, so its really up to the viewer.

Second, did she have her powers? Well, she froze the water in her cup in one scene, so its safe to assume that she also had some powers.

Third, did she lose her memory: NO. I strongly argue against this. In fact, Slade made a comment about "Anything Terra doesn't remember is because she doesn't want to". A very strong theme of the episode was that people have to chose their own path in life.

Terra's character had a very difficult complex. She was a lost person with a built in habit of ALWAYS RUNNING AWAY from her problems.

Even after being revived, she chose to turn her back on her old life, her powers, her potential destiny, and even the one person who truly cared about her: Beast Boy. Its really sad, when it comes down to it. A heartbreaking episode, emphasizing a very heartbreaking character. Terra was toned down from her comic-book persona, which was slightly more idiopathic, and some story arcs were changed. But the main characteristics stayed the same: Terra was a character whom it is both difficult and also entirely possible to relate with. She's doesn't know right from wrong, has a complex with forming relationships with people, and a generally self destructive nature. If one was to speculate the future of her character post-series, I don't think it would be a happy one for Terra. She still has powers she doesn't know what to do with, rejected Beast Boy and friends who cared about her, and is trying to regress all her past. She mentions "Maybe we'll talk again....someday". So there's small hope that she'd sort out her feelings, change her mind and return to the Titans as a changed individual.

But one of the most notable things about a character like Terra is the lack of moral growth. This is so true of people: the inability to learn from mistakes, to correct fatal character flaws. Terra gives the impression of redeeming herself at the end of "Aftershock", but yet not so. And "Things Change" confirmed this lack of change. In the end, this was a very moving story arc of Teen Titans that will stick with me much longer than I might like, and has definitely struck the most sensitive of cords.

Her actions in the finale might have been on a subconcious level, but nonetheless her subconscious choices were the result of her character flaws.

I was reading about how mirrors were a theme in "Things Change", and were sort of symbolism for how Terra never "saw herself".

Terra's innocence stems from the fact that she lacks the ability to take responsibility for her actions, and really to understand right and wrong. She doesn't know what she is, or is trying to be, good or bad, hero or villain. She's just someone who isn't morally "there".

She approaches her horrible acts with almost a childlike mentality.

Examples of this are in Betrayal, when she asks Beast Boy "Would you still like me if you knew something bad about me?" She can't even figure out why she's saving him. She so insecure, that right and wrong just don't work in her mentality.

Even after attempting to kill him without batting an eye, she still says "Your the best friend I ever had", before going to her fate. Its almost scary to see this psychologically incompatible character, especially when you compare her to people you may know in life, lost people who are going to do bad things without getting it.

So pointing out Terra's memories being subconsciously suppressed is entirely a defendable point.

It is generally agreed on about how Terra feared people rejecting her and how she was insecure and expected people to hate her all the time.

But the last episode was very reflective of Terra. Terra was the 'lost' character, and once you're lost, you never really come around. Note how Terra never showed any real remorse in "Aftershock". Even at the end of "Aftershock", she started to understand a bit about how she did have control over her own life, and could choose to do the right thing, but it wasn't Beast Boy or the Titans or even herself that helped her see that; it was Slade going off on her that made her rethink her decision in choosing him over the Titans.

But the main thing about Terra is it wouldn't have mattered. She wanted to be liked and wanted by people like Beast boy and the Titans and even Slade, but at the same time, she didn't care what she did to hurt them. The idea of Terra is that she was the "bad" friend. She obviously hurt too much to really accept the idea of having friends, nomatter how much she wished it.

I think that's the main reason she turned against the Titans. Sure, she felt hurt when they found out she couldn't control her powers, and she was hurting from the fact Slade exposed the darker side of her. But she also had a self destructive streak that caused her to throw away and strike out against anyone who got close to her, and even herself.

Terra in the last episode represented the fact that she was still lost, still couldn't accept people to get close to her, or face herself, her powers, and her potential life. And yes, that included Beast Boy. And while Beast boy hoped that she would change her mind, he knew he had to let her go and leave her to her own devices.
