It wasn’t a super long drive from SBEC out to the airport, but it was just long enough to make Tam crazy every time. Their flight out to Tasmania left in an hour, but Tam fretted constantly about the horse in the trailer behind them.
“You’ve never been so stressed before a show, boss,” Kaz’s easy voice slid towards her. The Georgian spoke English almost better than she did. She scowled at her employee and friend.
“This is the Trials, Kaz. This is big. Maisie’s ranked well with the Association, and I want to make the best first impression at KhanCohban that we can. This is important,” she stressed to him, wringing her hands as they passed into the airport parking lot. Flying a horse wasn’t really an easy thing, but luckily Maisie had plenty of experience. Tam continued as if she hadn't stopped. “If I want to get her ranked to Elite or even Supreme, we have to do well at the Trials. This is the biggest event the Association puts on, Kaz.” Kaz shook his head at the anxiety in her voice.
“You’re gonna do great, boss, and so is Maisie. You guys have been working on this for months, and every Aussie we’ve got is gonna be just as good once they’re grown. We’ve got this show in the bag, Tam,” Kaz assured her. Tam smiled at him as he parked the truck and trailer.
17 hours later, in the Outdoor Arena at KhanCohban, Tam held Maisie’s reins and tried to remember Kaz’s words. He was out in the crowd watching, and Tam felt relieved to know she had a friend there. Maisie was lively and beautiful today as they stood letting the judges look her over, and Tam felt a riding pride at how healthy and fit Maisie looked. She’d gotten a bit round after her pregnancy, and the flight and quarantine in Sydney. She was healthy and in prime condition now, and more than ready for her endurance ride with Kaz tomorrow. Tam smiled at her mare, and pet her softly on the nose as they moved out of the arena.
“You did good, girl. We did good.”
