“No. I forbid it.” The first voice was strained, but not in a terrible news way. Kate could hear the undercurrent of amusement in the tone.
“But Jon-”
“Nope.” The first voice again.
“You might be my boss, but you’re not the boss of my fashion choices.” The second voice was chipper and far too smug for his own good.
“I’ll leave you here.” That undercurrent of amusement again. Kate knew that both Jon and Bowen could hear it.
“And lose your best roper? I think the hell not,” the second voice said, and Kate rolled her eyes and finally swung the stall door open. Bowen Todd and Jon Morgan stood in the stall, each on one side of her own mount, the champagne stud Kip. Bowen was wearing some god-awful glittery gold tophat he’d won off Kelley Harris in a poker game last night; Jon was wearing a defeated expression at her entrance.
"You know what the difference is between you and me? I make this look GOOD." Bowen said as Kate walked in, pointing to the hat and then at Jon. He paled a bit as she walked in, and Kip gave an irritated flick of his tail at the amount of people in his stall. Kate rolled her eyes at the movie quote. “Get outta here, “Agent B”,” she said to Bowen, grinning as the cowboy threw up his hands dramatically and marched off with his tophat set at a jaunty angle. The plastic hat promptly fell off and started rolling down the barn aisle, Bowen chasing it.
“Thanks for the rescue,” Jon said wryly as Kate took up Bowen’s abandoned position at Kip’s side. The cowboy had gotten bits of gold glitter on Kip’s back; she might have to kill him for that.
“Help me actually get him ready and you can consider that repayment for my good deed,” Kate snarked back, hefting the saddle she’d picked up from the ground next to Kip. She looked at it, and frowned.
“Jon, this isn’t my saddle.”
Jon, who had suddenly become deaf, kept working on brushing out the amber-colored stallion. Kate narrowed her eyes at him.
“Jon, where is my saddle, and why is Lily’s in here?” She wouldn’t mind normally - she and Lily were around the size size - but this was Lily’s barrel saddle.
It was teal.
Well, not entirely teal, but all the accents and latigos were teal, and the seat was printed in a teal-and-gold pattern. It had huge chrome panels on the skirt, and it flashed brightly in the dim barn light.
“Jon.”
Jon jumped at her dark tone, and looked at her sheepishly, resigned to his fate once more. “Alright, so I had Gwen helping load the tack up, and she forgot to grab your saddle,” He said in a rush, naming his cousin with a quick prayer under his breath. Kate glared at him.
“You know I hate it when Gwen touches my things,” she started to growl, and Kip threw his head up at the dark noise, his mane whacking Kate in the face. She sputtered but let the anger go. Kip was sensitive, and she didn’t want to upset the stud before their run. She shook herself to get rid of most of the anger, glaring at Jon as she hefted the obnoxious saddle onto Kip’s back. Jon leaned back a bit as the stirrup nearly collided with his head.
“You’re gonna do great!” He called out as she grabbed the bridle off the hook on the wall, Jon running out the door and down the hall. “Coward,” she muttered, fitting Kip’s bridle to his head and letting the reins hang so she could grab them to lead him down to the arena. Kip followed along at her shoulder like a good little soldier, and she leaned a hug into his neck before they busted into the back of the arena.
It was a flurry of activity; a couple dozen reiners stood around with their mounts, and a few reporters talked to the head honchos over in a corner. Kate said hi to a couple other competitors she knew, but stayed mostly to herself. She took over a quieter corner. She turned her attention fully to Kip, making sure his saddle was all tight and his bridle was in good shape. She ignored the looks that the brightly-coloured barrel saddle got her, and mounted up on Kip to wait her turn.
She was in the middle of the pack of competitors, and she watched Taysom Kelce’s run with a snort. “Show-off” she muttered, though she did admire his pretty mare. The sponsor banners on the wall of the arena flapped a bit in the air, the one for the Imperials spooking a couple of horses, and Kip perked his head - and ears - up at the sound, spotting the mare at the same time. “Hol’ up, there, little brother,” Kate warned, pulling down on his reins to pull his head back down. She got to admire mares, not Kip - the last thing she needed was a randy stallion poking his nose where it didn’t belong. She sat deep in the barrel saddle’s seat to remind Kip that they had work to do, and he settled down.
It was their turn eventually, and Kate patted Kip’s neck affectionately as they passed through the crowd of competitors and towards the arena.
“Alright Kip, let’s get to work.”
