Description As posted in my recent journal, my grandmother has MS. I've taken the challenge to try and raise $1,500 so that I can be a part of the MS challenge walk, and as I've been in the spirit of helping to support this cause, I noticed that out of all the stamps floating about DA, there is only 1 other MS stamp besides mine.

And though I do like that other MS stamp, there needs to be more. Look how many cancer stamps there are, just for cancer, as well as breast cancer.

Is Multiple Sclerosis really that unknown?

That's why we need to step it up and let the world know about MS. I'm not using this stamp to ask people to donate, or to get page views in hopes that someone will notice my journal... I'm using this stamp to get the word out that Multiple Sclerosis is out there, and it's slowly devouring the lives of those we love.

So please. If you support Cancer research, then why not MS too? There's no cure yet, and that's what we need. Please spread the word.

Also I'd really appreciated if all who used this stamp would leave a comment here. It doesn't have to be anything long, just a simple "I'm using it" would be fine by me. I'd just like to know how many supporters of this cause are lurking out there. I'd also enjoy hearing any stories of other MS survivors, or of anyone who knows someone who's got MS. It's a small world, and I know I'm not the only one here who's got connections to this disease.

Thanks. <3

Stamp and slogan (c) Me
The slogan may have been used somewhere before... It's highly possible I could've heard it somewhere and picked it up without realizing it, so lemme know and I'll give credit if so.

I have MS.
And I'd say the reason that not so many people recognize it and such is that MS is more a "life sentence" than what can possibly happen with cancer or other problems. At least as is taught for people with Relapsing Remitting vs the other types.
Heard recently that Secondary Progressive can be denied help because so many people think that it's the end of the line. And that's as true as saying that fire needs ice.

Uhg, that's horrible. :c I know my mommom has had problems getting her medication through societies and whatnot because of disability and other things. I know how hard she has to fight to prove that she does really need to medication since she can't afford it herself, but the government makes it tough. She needs to be on disability to get help with meds, but then if she's on disability she can't hold a job.. because working somehow means she's not disabled. It's a ridiculous, vicious cycle which needs to be fixed so people can get the help they need. It's really sad that more people don't look into these things and offer support to those who need it. There's no "cure" for MS, which is why I support it more than other diseases that can potentially have a better out come. If you have it, you have it for life, and people should really stand up and fight to support those who need the help.

Yeah. All you say is true--you can't work 'full hours' at best and then 'can't at all' at worst. ><; Really depends on your doctor too...I'm just lucky enough to have a good one who's able to chew people when they have it coming.

Not everyone has the stream of luck it takes to have a good doctor, either. Ye end up with just a person who prefers the texts to the patient and get nowhere, sometimes. ><

I have MS! It is not at all as devastating as it is for some people.
I appreciate that bit greatly, and am always glad people are so apt to cheer-on and support curing it, especially for those whom it has had a much worse impact on.
Thank you for supporting the cause!

Aww, so sorry to hear that! There definitely isn't enough awareness. I hear from people all the time that they have friends or family with the disease, and yet still no one seems to know what it is or care to help fund research. :C

I've never done the walk before, but my mom did back in 1985... and, haha, now she has MS... fate's cruel, huh?

Nice to see another support stamp out here!

Oh wow That is pretty cruel. But perhaps now she has an even better reason to be such a great supporter!

Using this stamp. Had to. After my meltdown because an old family friend has it, I went hunting for a stamp to add to my collection.

Aww, that's terrible. I'm truly sorry to hear that your friend has it. Thankfully, it's something that can be somewhat managable, so it's not always straight down hill. My grandmother has been living with MS for years now, and although she does have bad days mixed in, she's been living a pretty normal life as long as she had her medication to help her manage the MS.

It's not that bad yet. He can still walk. today was a good day (Saw in for the first time in 13 years)

We chatted a lot about back then and chatted about a lot of stuff. He was happy so yeah it was a good day. Going to see him in the morning for lunch before he and Dad take off back to Vermont so he can catch his train to DC.

Thank you for this. It caught my attention because I was just diagnosed with MS. I'll be eighteen soon. Really threw me. I had been working towards becoming a pilot when I woke up one morning and couldn't see through my right eye. I got some of my vision back over time but it doesn't look like it will ever be great again. It's terrifying to go for your morning run and just not be able to get one of your legs to work right. Anyway, I guess my point is just thank you.

Awww, that's horrible D: I'm only 19, and I can't even imagine how terrifying it must be! A lot of disabilities and such.. I guess we (myself included) all seem to think it may happen when we're older, but you've just proved that it's not always the case. ]: I'm truly sorry, and I hope for your sake that a cure will be found sometime in the near future ]:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TehAlbi In reply to aquaeyes07 [2007-09-06 15:22:39 +0000 UTC]

This would be my first year. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to raise enough money to actually participate in the walk, but I'm going to see about getting off of work and volunteering to help those who did raise the money. I started raising funds late into the event this year, but next year I'll be sure to start early so I can raise the amount needed ;]

aquaeyes07 In reply to TehAlbi [2007-09-06 22:23:03 +0000 UTC]

I participated in my first walk this year as well, a 3 mile walk hosted by the MS Society, and I found that recruiting at work and throughout the local family and friends works really well for both donations and walkers. What organization are you walking for?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TehAlbi In reply to aquaeyes07 [2007-09-07 01:24:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'd be walking with the National MS Society. I tried getting my family to donate, the problem is, I have two sides to my family, my mother's side and my father's side. My mother is always hoping to participate in the walk, so she's already gotten everyone on her side of the family to donate to her; and I was hoping my dad's side would donate to the cause, but they hate my mom and that whole side of the family, and since my grandmother on my mom's side is the one who has MS, they won't donate... They really need to think about the cause rather then the fact that I'm participating in something with my mom, but that's just how they are, unfortunately. ]:

aquaeyes07 In reply to TehAlbi [2007-09-07 08:53:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I guess everyone has some sort of problem with their family, I mean, some of my family doesn't even know that my mom has MS, just for certain reasons. But you are right, there are those who would go out not only because they care for their family member or friend, but because they want to help the others that are suffering from the same fate. We all have those in our life that just don't realize that, but there's nothing we can really do about it. All we can do is try to help with those we do have, right?

(sorry, I got all sentimental and everything, lol)

I was talking to my mom about what you said about how it doesn't get as much attention as say cancer (a very dear family friend suffers from MS) She said it's probably because it's a long term crippling kind of thing, as appose to cancer which is a killer. It's not fair, but in our society quanity of life beats quality. =/ Good for you for raising awareness.
I'll use this when I get off my lazy arse and update my journal.

My mom and actually had a really interesting conversation about this, so thanks.

TehAlbi In reply to Ozfiztheweird [2007-08-18 20:34:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh, you're very welcome. :] Thanks for commenting.

Yes, I suppose your right... Cancer is a little harder to hide once it's gone into it's later stages (such as chemo treatments and such), whereas MS doesn't show as many physical flaws like the loss of hair and paleness that Cancer can produce. ]: I suppose it's a bit better for those who have MS, as it's easier to hide, and there's less to be ashamed of; but it still doesn't get the media attention that it should.

Glad you support the stamp, though <3 Thanks.

Oh, that's great! I've never heard of people doing that!

The only thing I've heard about around here that really puts it out there is this MS walk, but I think that's about it, sadly. There's so many groups for Cancers and such (not that it's bad!) but MS is a huge problem as well, and it seems to be shadowed by the larger, more well known diseases. ]:
