This tutorial is by no means a definitive guide, but it should help you with your tablet usage!
1 - First and foremost, don't be afraid of it. You need to use it. Every. Single. Day. Use it to browse the web for example. It'll help you get used to the sensitivity (practice highlighting sections of text), and all of the features of the pen. Some suggest that you should hide your mouse, so you're forced to only use your tablet!Β Through daily use, it should become an extension of your arm, and begin to move naturally.
2 - Play with it. Mess around with all of the settings your tablet has to offer. Not only will it help you find the settings you're most comfortable with, but it'll teach you what each individual part does. Also play around with it in your chosen drawing program (Photoshop / SAI / etc.), you'll learn more about your tablet and how it reacts to the program's settings (which may be different than what you're used to) - you're undoubtedly going to want to test the Pen Pressure setting within the advanced brush menu.
3 - Doodle. By doodling you're not only using it, but you're creating shapes (no matter how indistinguishable). Perhaps even start a new art project and only use your new tablet.
4 - Write with it - heck, even sign your name. We've been writing for almost our entire lives, we know the motion of each letter perfectly, and our signatures barely change throughout out life - so replicate that with your tablet.Β
5 - Read tutorials about your tablet. Learn tips and tricks from those who are used to using it every day.
6 - Still having troubles? If you've made the leap from drawing traditionally to drawing digitally, why not stick a piece of paper over the tablets drawing area. It won't effect the pen (in most cases) but it will give you a more natural drawing feel and help you in your transition.

This tutorial only needs one step: Keep practicing. This isn't rocket science after all.

Haha it's not x) But a new tablet can take an awful lot of getting used to. Especially if it's your first. I know it took me a long time to get to grips with mine.

Anybody use a Wacom Bamboo? I'm fine with it and have gotten used to it, but I want to see what other people think of it.

I hope you mean the Bamboo fun, because that tablet is great. The Bamboo Pen & Touch is crap (Or I got a misfunctional tablet, but I dont think so).

I meant a bamboo splash. That's what I have. I've seen a bamboo fun, and it looks really cool.

I have the Capture and I use the AutoDesk Sketchbook Express that came with it. I'm really having fun with it and getting use to using it, slowly but
surely. I'm learning a lot and think by using it I'm getting better on tablet
and paper!

Oh that's cool! My tablet came with AutoDesk and Artrage. They're both really cool programs!

I guess i'm afraid of my tablet when it comes to actually drawing on it....
I use it to colour all my works, but other than that it's all i use it for. I think i need to try using it for the whole thing, more often, this might be the motivation i need. Thanks for making this!

I only use mine to sketch. Once I have a clean sketch, I do the inking and coloring using Photoshop tools. The pen tool is wonderful for line art. It can be done with a mouse and you get nice, smooth lines.

At the moment I only use my tablet for rare sketching x) As a gamer, I still find using my mouse smoother D: buuut I don't do much design work that requires a tablet (yet)... and it is at my home, and not with me at University

I've had and used WACOM tablets for quite a few years, only diving headfirst into serious works (coloring, that crap). It never came to me I could just knock about with it and doodle. (Sadly, the sensitivity isn't as good as an Intuos but I still like my Bamboo Fun). I don't fool with the settings, since I've been afraid that I couldn't get them back the way I wanted too.

You could always take note of the settings you're currently using, so you have a reference if you do mess around too much and want to go back You may be surprised and find that some new settings work better for you!

I'm sorry for being slow in making it then
Despite it's lateness, did you find it useful?

Kalafin99 In reply to TehAngelsCry [2013-02-06 12:28:46 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I do find it useful, only, I don't find changing the tablet's setting is useful for me........the only things I can change is the programs' setting....I think most people don't really know how to change its setting easily, like me, with my current first tablet....
So, it'll be useful for people to know how to change the programs' setting instead of the tablet's...

It's a good tip to explore the settings of the tablet and the programs. Learning the features is so helpful. I spent about 6 months putting a ruler on my tablet when I wanted to draw a straight line before someone told me I could just use the shift key.

Aww, that's adorable But I imagine it's such an easy thing to miss - not knowing the shift key XD
