This tutorial is by no means a definitive guide, but it should help you with your tablet usage!
1 - First and foremost, don't be afraid of it. You need to use it. Every. Single. Day. Use it to browse the web for example. It'll help you get used to the sensitivity (practice highlighting sections of text), and all of the features of the pen. Some suggest that you should hide your mouse, so you're forced to only use your tablet! Through daily use, it should become an extension of your arm, and begin to move naturally.
2 - Play with it. Mess around with all of the settings your tablet has to offer. Not only will it help you find the settings you're most comfortable with, but it'll teach you what each individual part does. Also play around with it in your chosen drawing program (Photoshop / SAI / etc.), you'll learn more about your tablet and how it reacts to the program's settings (which may be different than what you're used to) - you're undoubtedly going to want to test the Pen Pressure setting within the advanced brush menu.
3 - Doodle. By doodling you're not only using it, but you're creating shapes (no matter how indistinguishable). Perhaps even start a new art project and only use your new tablet.
4 - Write with it - heck, even sign your name. We've been writing for almost our entire lives, we know the motion of each letter perfectly, and our signatures barely change throughout out life - so replicate that with your tablet.
5 - Read tutorials about your tablet. Learn tips and tricks from those who are used to using it every day.
6 - Still having troubles? If you've made the leap from drawing traditionally to drawing digitally, why not stick a piece of paper over the tablets drawing area. It won't effect the pen (in most cases) but it will give you a more natural drawing feel and help you in your transition.

Hello~ I just purchased a Genius tablet (not a Wacom since it's expensive and I'm still a newbie anyways), problem is, it's sooooo difficult to do some sketching, even with drawing a curve, it's just really crappy, and the lines aren't smooth, and it's sooo out of control. I don't know if it'll be like this forever or if I just need to get used to it.. Anyways, this tutorial is helpful, and I'll follow the tips~ thanks for making this.

There were no real hands on tutorials written then, so mine sat in the box for almost 4 months before I finally practiced using it.

It's really surprising how many people I've talked to in the last year who have told me they gave up on trying to use it. I explain to them ideas that are similar to your tablet tutorial and I also remind them about the first time they sat at a computer and tried to use a mouse.

I think the problem stems from us using mice from a really young age. So it becomes second nature extremely quickly. Whereas a lot of us don't get tablets until we're a lot older XD

You might have something there. My 3 year old daughter is a pro on anything touch screen, yet we are still working on mouse skills. She's had a tablet since age 2, so she knows how to use the touch screens. Also, it is funny to see her try to move a non-touch screen, be it a computer or digital camera, etc... She has learned that screens should interact when touched, so she doesn't quite get it when it doesn't.
